A Very Wartime Christmas [Feb. 1st, 2008|12:27 am]
gentle_gene
Who: Staff and Patrons of Le Passant
Where: Le Passant
When: Mid Evening on Christmas Eve
What: Le Passant is having a party
Summary: A night of drinking, food and enjoyment is interrupted in the most surprising of ways.

Le Passant always had a warm, inviting atmosphere, but tonight was particularly cheerful. A small four piece band had set up on the stage and were already warming up to play Christmas Music all through the night. For a fee of 20 Reichmarks (though it was waved for those patrons who were loyal but could not afford it in the entirity) a party was being thrown. Booze until dawn, food until the kitchen runs out, and they will be closed tomorrow. The room was decorated as best possible on a limited budget: tinsel, snowflakes and cranberries are strung all around the walls. And, of course, there was mistle toe hung upon the interior door from the front foyer/coat room to the actual bar.

~I'll walk alone through every Christmas until you're beside me, and I'll dream your beside me when my heart tells me you are dreaming too. I'll walk alone with all the memories of other Decembers just a girl who remembers dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight.~ )

All is calm, all is bright [Jan. 31st, 2008|06:20 pm]

jackiepearson
Who: Jacqueline, Vito, anyone else who may have been invited- or who needs a warm meal
When: Christmas Eve, 1940
Where: Jacqueline's flat
Rating: PG
Status: Open
Summary: Jacqueline invited her few friends over for dinner and drinks, and told them that they could bring guests.

Her food was a bit scarce this week, but she had invited people over for dinner... so she had to feed them. Jackie found herself resorting to things that her Mother used to do, back in Georgia. The soup bone went into a pot, with mixed greens. She wasn't sure what kind of greens they were, but they all cooked the same. She managed to get enough ground beef to make a meat loaf (stretched with bread crumbs, of course), and she cut up a few potatoes and stuck them in her oven. For dessert, she took old bread, sugar, and a bit of egg and milk, and made a cake like dish.

Once dinner was finished, Jackie waited. She hoped someone would show up- She hated spending Christmas alone.

Christmas Eve [Jan. 30th, 2008|09:53 pm]
vie_mods
It is now Christmas Eve, 1940. Snow has fallen heavily about starting mid day and stretching into the night. Everyone actually seems to be in lighter moods than usual. Some can hear stories being told of a Christmas truce in 1914, during the first great war, when both sides laid down their weapons on Christmas and ate together on the battle field. No one is certain if it is true or not, but the city of Paris seems to be breathing a sigh of relief. If only for a few hours.

Introductions [Jan. 26th, 2008|07:26 pm]

[Current Mood |nervous]

Who: Hans, Gretchen, Marie-Pierre
When: a December evening
Where: Le Passant
Summary: Hans introduces Gretchen to Marie-Pierre, and visca versa
Complete/Incomplete: Incomplete
Rating: PG

Hans was nervous about introducing the two most important people in his life to each other. He thought that they would get along well -but still, what if they despised each other entirely? Or what if his sister, being how she was, asked entirely nosy questions - or worse, told embarrassing stories about his childhood? What if they hit it off too well, and Marie-Pierre started flirting with his sister? Still, he did want Marie-Pierre to keep an eye out for his sister in the dangerous city - and that would be hard to do if they'd never been introduced.

Trying to quell his apprehension, Hans settled at his usual table and waited for his guests to arrive. With any luck, at least the evening wouldn't end in either stabbings or despair.

Who: Hans and Lucy.
When: Morning, December 1940.
Where: An empty office in one of the government buildings.
Summary: Lucy finally gets an interview with one of the Nazis.
Complete/Incomplete: Incomplete.
Rating: PG.

After several days of questioning random Nazis as they left work for the evening, Lucy had finally gone inside and asked for a formal interview with anyone involved with the government, preferably a German citizen. By that she really meant someone in the Nazi party. She had shown them her papers again and again, arguing rather successfully that she wasn't a spy and that they could call her editor at the Times if they felt so inclined. Finally, she was granted a press pass for one interview to be scheduled at the convenience of the government. So it was with excitement and a little nervousness that Lucy made her way to the address on the card that the secretary had given her a few days ago.

Oscar made the route in record time, despite the detour he had to make to bypass a German patrol. Spotting Le Passant from one of his jumps between roofs, he slowed his pace. Rattling down a cold metal fire escape, he dropped to street level and slipped his plimsolls on.

Fun and Games [Jan. 25th, 2008|10:01 pm]

[Current Mood |contemplative]

Who: Hans and Marie-Pierre
When: night, after this visit to the cafe
Where: The Duck Nest
Rating: PG-13
Complete
Summary: Discussion of the situation with Le Passant and other such troublesome matters

Hans felt pleased with the way things had gone. They'd efficiently warned Genevieve of the danger to Le Passant, and in a way that hopefully did nothing to implicate either himself or Marie-Pierre. Provided the Fraulein didn't handle things in a stupid or panicky manner, all should be well. And she hadn't been managing to stay in business by being stupid, Hans thought. So he was fairly optimistic about her chances. Perhaps more importantly than the warning, however - Hans had discovered that he and Marie-Pierre worked well together. They picked up on each other's signals and set things up just right. Furthermore, Hans found himself enjoying the game. It was a bit like playing chess - with much higher stakes.

These things on his mind, Hans wandered towards the Duck Nest. He never went there directly, rather taking a slightly different and meandering route each time. Just as a precaution. When at last he arrived, he stood out in the street as he had on his first night coming here, and looked up towards the window for sight of Marie-Pierre.

A Chess Game (reprise) [Jan. 24th, 2008|01:22 am]

[Current Mood |worried]

Who: Hans , Marie-Pierre, Gene
When: December , some enchanted evening
Where: Le Passant
Rating: PG
Complete
Summary: Hans and Marie-Pierre scope out the situation with Le Passant, and warn Gene of unpleasant things.

Hans truly enjoyed the atmosphere at Le Passant, and didn't want to lose his favorite cafe any time soon. He was reasonably sure that the rumors were just that- rumors, but what did he know? That one time Gene had asked him for passes did nag at the corners of his mind and make him suspect that maybe there was some foundation to the truth. But Hans himself was not used to investigating these sort of things - he had little experience with the wonderful world of determining who was doing what behind the scenes. Fortunately for him, Marie-Pierre did this sort of thing for a living. So it was that they had agreed on meeting up at the cafe, ostensibly to play their usual chess game, but with an underlying purpose of finding out what was truly going on, and whether or not Genevieve should or could be safely warned about the potential trouble ahead.

Hans came in after work, his chessboard tucked in the bag over his shoulder, and headed for his usual table. He smiled at Genevieve as he got settled.

Who: Friedrich and Marie-Pierre.
When: Morning, December 1940
Where: A random Paris alley.
Summary: Interesting people meet other interesting people and interesting bargains are made.
Complete/Incomplete: Incomplete.
Rating: PG13 for potential bloodshed.

Friedrich was navigating by smell and touch right now; familiar flagstones, familiar scents. Not by sight - during the day, in a city, his vision wasn't all that good, shades of black and white in what was typically brilliant color. That was the only thing he hated about his wolf body - the color was gone.

An evening out [Jan. 22nd, 2008|10:14 pm]

Who:Joséphine open to all
When: a December evening
Where: Le Passant
Rating: PG

Summary: An evening at Le Passant

Wanting to get out for the evening, Joséphine decided to try a cafe she'd never been to before. She'd seen handbills advertising Le Passant and their extended hours. She didn't have work in the morning, so she figured that if she got absorbed in the entertainment- this way she wouldn't have to worry about curfew and could just stay on until it lifted the next day. She decided to dress up for the occasion, sweeping up her hair and putting on some earrings and her nicest dress.

She pushed open the door, and looked around at the various patrons there. It seemed like a nice enough place. She smiled as she headed towards the bar, intent on collecting a drink and finding herself a place to sit and enjoy the evening.

Baked goodness [Jan. 22nd, 2008|09:59 pm]

[Current Mood |hopeful]

Who: Marie , Lucy, Marie-Pierre
When: December, on a windy mid afternoon
Where: la Boulangerie Chabert
Rating: PG
Complete
Summary: Bakery goodness and friendly talk

Happy to have received a fresh supply of flour and even some sugar, Marie had been busy all week catching up with orders. Today, she'd just about finished the backlog - and she even had time to make some rare treats - cakes, and pastries - enough to almost fill the front display case. She still wasn't sure that the money she'd taken from her savings in order to pay for the flour and sugar she'd found was worth it - but well, it was to keep the business going. What could be done in times like these?

And it was worth it to see the happy faces of those who were pleased to taste her famous sweets again. It had been too long since the last batch, really. Marie resolved to try and have more of the luxuries for sale, whenever possible. Only a few customers were left in the store once the earlier rush had faded, and Marie turned towards them with a bright smile. "May I help you?" she asked.

Oscar skipped over the fourty seventh rooftop of the evening. When he’d risen, the ash-grey sky was still waning. A cake for Nadal [Jan. 22nd, 2008|12:53 am]

Who: Hans / Stephane, Mirielle
When: the day after the musicala, early evening
Where: The Occitan Bistro
Summary: Hans wants to talk to the Occitan folks about making a special Nadal cake.
Complete
Rating: PG

Hans dressed in his civilian clothes after work, and headed straight for the Occitan bistro. Truth be told, he wasn't even sure of the name of the place- or even if it had a name. But the only Occitans he knew other than Marie-Pierre resided there, and if he was to pull off this surprise - he would need their help. He had been in there alone once before - to ask Stephane to deliver a message to Marie-Pierre. And he'd been seen in there twice now with Marie-Pierre, so he hoped they would react favorably to his request. Or at the very least, they wouldn't mind him asking.

Feeling a bit nervous about the whole thing, Hans pushed open the door to the bistro and stepped inside.

Dr. Morgan Michaud-Carre Seeks To Straighten Out Her Papers, Part II [Jan. 21st, 2008|08:41 pm]
little_scary
Who: Dr. Morgan Michaud-Carre.
When: Mid-morning, December 1940.
Where: The Place of German Beauracracy, trying to get her papers straightened out.
Rating: PG, so far, if that.
Status: Continued from HERE Anyone may tag this, whether I'm online or not. I will tag back upon login.
Summary: She's still looking to update her papers so as to allow her to see patients after curfew.

The lines were long. That was no surprise. Dr. Carre waited patiently, really as there was no other choice. All sorts of people came and went, stopping at windows, and sometimes, going back into private offices. There seemed to be a bit of a stir at one point, and the man led off looked terribly white-faced.

She finally reached the window, where she explained to the rather sour-looking clerk, who's French was very bad, what she needed, quickly switching to German. The sour departed, at least somewhat, as it seemed to be a more or less permanent condition. He asked about her German. "I went to school in Hungary." She explained. This seemed to mollify him almost as much as that she'd spoken his language for him, and he pointed her through to an office to the side where there was a much shorter line. "They should be able to help you there." He explained. "Yours is not a typical case, and what you have here so far does seem to be in good order."

"Danke." She said, and made her way to the next waiting spot. This moved a bit more slowly, but not terribly much so, as there were only four people ahead of her. They were ushered in one side of the office, sat down, at one of two desks. Those inside seemed to be in uniform...

Who: Lucy Thatcher.
When: Evening, December 1940.
Where: Le Passant
Rating: PG
Status: Open and incomplete -- anybody feel welcome to just jump right in!
Summary: Lucy is going over some of her notes with a drink. She would appreciate some company.

Lucy knew that she was supposed to be following the rules of the Vichy government while she was on assignment in Paris. She knew that she was supposed to keep her nose clean, get her stories and send them back to the Times headquarters in London, stay out of trouble, and live a quiet life in the small room she rented out while she was there. Basically, Lucy was supposed to live like a nun. After wiring her latest article to her editor and assuring him that she was going straight back to her room, the blonde had instead made a beeline for Le Passant, looking forward to the glass of scotch she planned on ordering. Now, sitting at a small table in a shadowy corner, Lucy sat in thought, tapping her glass with one finger and smoking a cigarette. Her notebook was on the table in front of her, but she had yet to open it. Her mind was on other things.

Reverend Mother Michael Therese was not certain how much longer the school could continue with the policy of fasting, and giving overages to the poor, but knew that they would go as long as they could. So far, the students were well-fed enough to give up all but bread for lunch two days a week, and all meat on Fridays, of course.
