FAQ:
What exactly is museboxing?
It means roleplaying in a non-game setting. That means no apps, no activity check, no concrit memes and so on. However, what’s different with Starfallen is that there is continuity: characters you play will stay in the same setting and be able to build CR, instead of being played in a “vacuum” where no development happens.
So what do I do when I want to play [this and this] character?
First of all, you create a journal. Creating a journal in IJ needs an invite code at the moment, but contact the mods for those. Then you hunt for icons (easystreet @ dreamwidth is a good place for tv show bases), and when that’s done, just join the comm. And then it’s rp time!
What is Starfallen and how does the setting work?
Your character, upon waking up, will find themselves in a city that seems to go on and on, stone-paved streets and buildings lining up on all sides, no matter where you go. They will find that they only have whatever possessions they had back in the moment when they were pulled into the city.
How does the playing work? Do I make posts, tag posts, or…?
The comm will have a specific “theme” for the month that will have its own intro post by the mods, and the post will contain any and all information considering the changes in the city, such as any magical shenanigans that might take place, but it's your choice as to what to do with that information. Reactions to whatever is going on at the moment can be played in the comments of the log. However, characters can also make their own posts. The same applies to new characters: their intro can be played out either in the log post or you can make a new post for them.
So what exactly is this theme?
It varies! But basically it works through the houses: the theme is a specific setting or a thing that will happen when your character walks into a house. So the city itself stays the same, but what the characters will encounter inside the houses changes. It might not be a change in the “setting”, either, but also something your character has to do upon entering the house. However, entering a specific house doesn’t always entail a specific setting, and some of the houses will still look like entirely normal apartments.
But I had this really cool idea for my character that has nothing to do with the current theme!
Sure, why not! Some of the houses can work as separate from the theme of the month, and if you have a specific idea that you want to play out, you can always say it happens inside a particular house. However, basic logic still applies: you can’t change the entire city to look like Camelot or a futuristic sci-fi city, for example.
Can I bring in dead characters?
Go ahead!
What if my character has superpowers?
That’s awesome! They’ll keep their powers, except if it’s a particularly god-moddy power, then it might be limited. Teleportation is also off-limits, so your character might be able to transport themselves a short distance, but wouldn’t be able to go back to their own world.
What if I bring in a character later on?
That isn't a problem, because the city will always stay the same, so any new characters will always wake up in the same place. So just make a comment for them in that month’s theme post, or make an entirely new post for them, either works!
What does “add your character tag to the post” mean?
It means that when you tag a post with your character, you go to “edit tags” in that post and add your character’s name to it. That way, it will be easier to find the threads later on.
Do I have to join the comm?
No, you don't! Just remember that if you don't join it, you can't make posts for your character and are limited to playing stuff out in the "theme" posts the mods make.
I want to plot something/have a suggestion to what kind of a post/setting there could be!
Brilliant! Suggestions and plotting are always welcome. At the moment, the musebox doesn’t have an OOC community due to its limited player count, so all plotting and suggestions and whatnot happen in plurk or skype. Basically whichever way is the most convenient for you! You’re also encouraged to have a contact info post in your character’s journal, so others know how to contact you.
