Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Parvati, Draco, Spencer, Dina
Where: Malfoy Manor
When: Evening May 20th
What: Spencer and Dina have an annoucement they've been puzzling over, it may not be the best time, nor the best audience. Parvati and Draco decide to take a big step ...

"Oh my goodness!" Parvati gasped in excitement as the two couples walked into Malfoy Manor. In an instant she had pulled off her heels, flinging them across the foyer as Ceecee the house-elf ran to gather them. "It feels so good to be out of those shoes!" She stretched the soles of her feet out against the marble flooring, revelling in the cool soothe. "Ugh, I danced too much! They hurt like crazy!"

The two couples had had a lovely evening out consisting of dinner and a short time at a club before deciding to head back to the Malfoy's for a nightcap. "Mmh, alright," She snuggled into Draco's side as he pulled off his blazer. "What does everyone want to drink? Dina, are you still just having water?" For some reason, Dina had started up a new fad diet concept that involved no alcohol the whole night, it had been a real downer for Parvati.

Spencer's eyes slid to his fiancee's as he helped her out of her coat. He'd been drinking a bit too much tonight. How could he not? He needed the relief after all, scary grown up things seemed to be heading their way.

"Maybe you two can spend the night here! Ooh, and we can have brunch tommorrow!" Parvati cheered, clapping her hands. "What do you think, Draco?"

Draco shrugged, indifferent as usual.

"Spencer, do you want a night cap?" he strolled over to their bar table. "I have a single barrel bourbon. It's quite creamy actually, I think you'll enjoy it. Dina, you've always said you've wanted to be able to drink whiskey-- this would be a brilliant place to start. It's American, so it was difficult to get a hold of."

Dina's eyes involuntarily flashed with curiosity, but she shied away.

"Not tonight... I've gained a bit of weight from that carb binge I went on recently... Wheat doesn't do well with me," she lied, touching her stomach. "And alcohol certainly doesn't help."

"Bloody hell, you're just as bad as Parvati," Draco tsked. "Spencer, you're okay with that?" Handing a heavy bottomed tumbler to Spencer and taking one for himself, Draco had to admit it was nice sinking into his leather arm chair after such a long night. He had no idea how Parvati did it in heels.

"Yeah, thanks." Spencer said agreeably, settling down into a elegant backed chair. Blue eyes immediately tracked his girlfriend as she touched her stomach and a surge of protectiveness came over him. It had been two weeks since she had told him her period was late and one week until the Healer had told them that a pregnancy spell would be possible. He patted his knee as she looked over at him, beckoning her to join him.

"Well, Draco, I'm not quite as iron-handed as you, with my witch." Spencer took the tumbler with a smile.

Her brunch plans having gone wholly ignored by the others, Parvati sighed and dropped into a chair herself. She'd been feeling very ignored recently: with Draco working considerable longer hours and her friends having oddly vanished for the last few weeks. She rather suspected the only reason the other couple had come out tonight was because the evening had been planned for weeks and Draco joined simply to keep any other wizards away from her.

"Honestly, Dina, it's weird. You look even thinner than you did last month at the Dragonpox Ball." Parvati complimented, nursing her ego and flattening down the skirt to her champagne dress

Dina knew this was untrue. She had gained 5 lbs after all! It was the reason she was wearing a more forgiving dress; she typically favored dresses that you had to be sewn into. Had it not been for the news hanging over their heads, Spencer would have been very relaxed that evening for once.

"That's not true at all," she dismissed, turning the attention back to her friend. "You look really lovely tonight, though. Really, Parvati." What, with the way the witch was glowing one would think that it was Parvati who was potentially pregnant, not Dina.

"I suppose she does," Draco grinned evilly, turning to glance at his wife. Noticing that she was sitting so far away, he feigned a wounded expression.

"Well, Capper? What do you think? Dina's missing out, isn't she?" he swirled the bourbon around in his glass. "Parvati, do you want to taste it?"

He thought fondly of the last time his brother had tried whiskey.

FIRE! Iggy had shouted, hating the burn down his throat. He broke a very expensive crystal glass that day.

"I think both the girls should have a little sip. That would be fun, wouldn't it? I promise this one is sweet and creamy, Parvati. If you truthfully disagree, I'll buy you that necklace we saw in the shop window today."

"Thanks." Parvati said quietly, looking at her husband as he built on Dina's compliment. At his wounded expression she rolled her eyes. Although, as always, whenever he gave her attention, her cheeks warmed in pleasure. "But I wasn't saying that to get a compliment. You really do look thinner."

A crease formed between Spencer's brows. If Dina was actually thinner then that couldn't possibly be good for the baby, could it? He'd have to make sure she ate more. As she walked near him, he pulled her down into his lap, her yellow skirt flooding out over his knees.

"It's very nice." He noted agreeably before sharing an uncomfortable gaze with the leggy asian at Draco's comment. "Er, sure, why not. One sip won't hurt, ha ha ha." He enunciated his laughs, an altogether unnatural expression as he shifted Dina on his lap.

Never one to ignore something that could possibly nab her a necklace (especially one with such beautiful emeralds), Parvati slipped over and took a sip of her husband's tumbler. "Oh gosh, it does burn." Her nose wrinkled cutely before she took a second sip, "But actually... it's really nice. Try it, Dina!"

Spencer cleared his throat awkwardly and offered his glass to Bredina, his lips thin.

Ah, yes. Bredina and Parvati were silly witches. But after years of uncertainty and heartache, signs of affection from their loves filled them with a tipsy sort of joy. As the yellow skirt of her dress collected over her boyfriend's legs, Dina couldn't help but smile despite their predicament.

Turning her face so that Parvati and Draco couldn't see, Dina raised her eyebrows at Spencer. Allowing a curtain of long, dark hair to shield her lips from supposed view, she pretended to take a sip.

"Oh that does burn," she fake winced. "It is quite lovely though," she added as Spencer took the glass quickly from her, taking a liberal sip so that Draco and Parvati hopefully couldn't tell that she hadn't actually had any.

"Don't gulp it down!" Draco admonished in horror.

Parvati watched her friend for a long moment with a hint of confusion on her pretty features. "Dina," She began slowly, a dawning realisation on the tip of her mind, "Did you just fake taking a sip?" Bredina had tilted her face oddly, letting her hair shield her entire face, something that the straight, well shaped asian hair rarely did.

Spencer, through all the torturous burn that scalding the tender flesh of his throat, managed to stay straight faced. "I'm just more manly than you, Draco. I can handle it." He felt dizzy with pain for a moment. The things he would do for love.

Dina was a great liar when she had time to prepare. On her feet? Not so much.

"Huh?" she drew out the word too much. "What?" she began to laugh a little. "Of course I didn't," she twisted her face into what was supposed to be a confused expression. "Of course I drank it, Parv," she looked at Spencer hurriedly.

Not as eager as his wife, Draco leaned over the arm of his chair lazily.

"Well, you just chugged down a million galleons, most likely," he shot back, irritated. Despite all his wealth, Draco was still possessive and mindful over everything. "What's this about a fake sip?" Not piecing anything together in the slightest, Draco smiled mockingly. "Afraid of whiskey, eh Dina?"

Dina looked eerily pale and nauseous.

"No, I don't think you did..." Parvati frowned, looking at both the brunette and the blonde with all the intensity of a detective on the case. "Draco, I think Dina faked the sip."

"She drank it!" Spencer defended, putting his glass on the sidetable. "Why would she not?"

"Why would she not?" Parvati repeated, "And That's why you took such a big sip afterward! To make it seem like she did!" The niggling feeling was getting bigger. No way. They couldn't be. They weren't even married yet! Draco and Parvati had been married for over two years and he still kept putting it off ... no way that Spencer would be so calm and normal if ...

"What's going on?" She looked straight at her best friend, eyes demanding a truthful answer.

Dina averted her eyes.

"I just don't really like whiskey," Dina replied, holding Spencer's knee for assurance.

"This is just like the time you claimed you wanted to go on the biggest roller coaster," Draco chimed in, not getting the direction they were going at all. "We waited in line for half an hour and you chickened out when we finally got there. At least you didn't waste any like Poncy did," he smiled easily. Despite Draco's obliviousness, though, he was starting to sense some stress emanating from his wife.

"Parvati, would you like the house elves to bring you some noodles?" he offered.

"No way," Parvati's cheeks felt hot with her own intensity. "That's not it. I don't believe it." She wanted to add that Dina wasn't even looking at her, but was too much of a lady to put too much pressure unless it was absolutely warranted.

Meanwhile, Spencer was doing quick calculations in his mind. He knew Parvati well enough to know that she wasn't about to back down and he'd rather not have his best friends ticked off after giving them the run around.

As Draco waffled on, not getting anything in the least, Spencer's blue eyes gazed at his girlfriend. His broad hand slid across hers as they shared a look. With a quick breath he pulled his top lip in between his teeth and lower and gave her an amused little shrug.

"Dina is only like that with rides." He defended. "Go on then, Dina." He was okay with it. "We're not quite sure, you see." He started it for her.

Parvati shook her head at Draco's offer, "No, thank you." She turned toward Dina once again.

Dina felt a rush of relief as Spencer took her hand. Although she wasn't sure if she was ready for a baby, she knew that Spencer was the best person to take on such a surprise with.

"I might be pregnant."

Involuntarily she squeezed Spencer's hand. There it was, strong and solid as always. Instructing herself to exhale, she tried to relax against his frame.

On the other side of the room, the hairs on the back of Draco's neck stood on end. He did not DARE look at his wife.

She had been wanting a baby for what seemed like ages, and Draco simply was not ready. In a panic, he wished that the house would come under attack so that there would be some sort of distraction.

Spencer smiled fondly at Dina as she spoke. It might be all the alcohol but he was feeling a lot more relaxed at the idea. Sure, it was a few months and a wedding early, but in the end he did want to have children with the tall asian, and life would continue on like always.

As she relaxed against him, he turned his face to drop a kiss on her smooth shoulder, giving her side a squeeze. "The Healer said the spell to tell for sure wouldn't be accurate until a week from now, so we're just holding off. It's obviously a bit early, but either way I think we can handle it." He grinned, "And at least it'll force her to stop wearing such short skirts all the time." He jimmyed his leg so she bounced a little.

Parvati meanwhile had frozen in a rather painful looking smile. They had been married long enough that people were always asking nowadays, the tabloids had even posted that one story about marriage issues leading to no children (Draco had forced them to retract it, but still the humiliation heated her cheeks at the very memory). And yet, it wasn't even that which was the worst, it was the craving she had: The want for a baby of their own.

She managed a trembling smile at Dina and Spencer's news but, drunk and unable to help herself, Parvati's reply was a pained, furious, "Draco!"

"I think we can handle it too," Dina replied warmly-- something she didn't think she could have ever admitted before. But this was a new stage for Dina and Spencer. No games. No pride. Well... at least when it came to serious situations like this. She honestly felt that he had her back. For the first time ever, she felt like she could relax and let someone take care of her.

"I still have a good three months of short skirts," Dina joked lightly, although the warmth she was feeling as a result of her fiance's support was drained at Parvati's pained reaction.

Although Draco felt nervous, hearing his wife's furious call put him on the defensive.

"Yes?" he replied shortly, almost coldly.

"Hey, don't even think-" Spencer began to tease her back before he blinked, surprised at the other girl's reaction and turned. Suddenly, it felt like they were outsiders in the conversation and frowning lightly he glanced at Dina. Spencer was never good when others argued. A inherent fixer, he felt the need to mediate. Though he was fairly sure the last time he had come between Draco and Parvati had been in Hogwarts and he and Draco had ended up brawling. Ah. The good ol days.

Parvati was not someone to air their dirty laundry, but her entire body seemed to be shaking she was so upset (or was that the alcohol?) Draco's cold response had that same feeling sweeping her body to the point that she could barely think straight.

"A baby, Draco! They're having a baby and they aren't ready but they can handle it! Do you hear that? They didn't even start dating until after we got married!" Her voice was borderline hysterical. This could go either way, she'd either start crying or start exploding things.

Spencer had his bets on exploding.

"Are you seriously doing this?" Draco couldn't help but snap. "Right now? And you know, every time you think of a baby you really pay no regard to what I have to do at work. I barely have enough time to keep myself sane, and yet I spend the seemingly mythical amount of energy I have left trying to be a good, loving husband. But for you it's never enough. I am never enough. Despite the fact that I am bleeding from my eyeballs, trying to manage all of these projects, you insist on having a baby right NOW." His knuckles were white.

Flinching, Dina curled up against Spencer, as if to protect herself.

"Parvati..." Dina began slowly, wondering if this was a mistake. "Each couple is different... and each couple has their strengths and weaknesses, and require different timing. I mean," she paused, "Yes, if I am pregnant, I think we can handle it. But this isn't what we planned," she tried to explain. "With Draco, I'm sure that you and he could handle a baby somehow... but he wants the timing to be right?"

Draco didn't say anything, he was too angry.

Draco's knuckles were white, but Parvati's cheeks were red. Usually, when he raised his voice, his wife would quail and retreat, but now, so tipsy and so very upset, she stood even taller. "Right now? Right NOW?" She repeated, eyes blazing, "Is that bad that I insist? Because our whole lives everything has been on YOUR schedule! Why must I push you to say I love you? Why do I insist on making our relationship public? Why do I want to get married? Because if I didn't, we'd be nowhere, Draco! Because you never wanted ANY of it!"

She turned to Dina, and toward her friends, her face held none of the anger and fury, but only hurt and quickly fracturing emotions. "It's not timing..." Her voice trembled, "He's said this for over a year! Look how normal Spencer is, dealing with this unplanned thing - Draco would lose it -" She pointed her finger dramatically at him, "He's losing it right now!"

Spencer, meanwhile, rubbed the back of his neck. He felt on edge, fairly sure something was soon to start exploding, and as such shifted Dina off his knee and onto his chair so he could protect her with his body if need be. "Well, I don't think I was quite so normal the day she told me-" He offered.

"I did want it," Draco roared. "And it wasn't on MY schedule, it was a fucking compromised schedule, Parvati! Yes, I might take a while with these things, but that was me meeting you half way. It's not that I didn't want it, it's that I'm more bloody reserved with my emotions than you are! Of course everything is dandy for you, you want everything at your feet right away, you've had everything you've wanted come immediately your whole fucking life."

"He's right," Dina backed Spencer up, as Parvati tried to explain how irrational Draco was being. "Spencer wasn't so calm right away... I don't think anyone could take such big news calmly... and you know, we're all still so young..." she trailed off, feeling uneasy as the tension continued to rise in the room.

"Yes, we are young," Draco jumped in again, face full of rage. "We have our whole lives ahead of us, but of course, Princess Parvati Patil needs everything right here right now. She needs her necklaces right now, her cupcakes right now, her baby right fucking now. God forbid she wait!"

Parvati flinched as Draco's temper peaked and his voice resounded through the room. Her eyes blinked rapidly as he cursed and her pretty lips curled in distaste. She took his rant standing very still, hands almost frozen at her side as if she was being scolded. In fact, inside, her head was reeling at his comments.

As Dina piped up, Spencer shook his head quickly, placing a firm hand on her thigh. He knew when to bow out and this was that moment.

"I..." Parvati fought to keep from crying. With Draco, her anger was always so close to sadness that she could never yell for long without tearing up. She hated that about herself. "I never waited? I waited for you for so long, Draco. I waited so long that you left me and dated another woman. I waited for you to the point that you proposed to me only when you thought I really wouldn't be there anymore!"

She was struggling to keep in tears and as such was suppressing her anger so much that it literally erupted. "I! WAITED!" Close to their bar, she picked up the glass of that single barrel bourbon that her husband loved so much and sent it hurtling toward the floor where it shattered into dust and liquor.

As the glass smashed to the floor, Dina instinctively reached for Spencer's hand.

"We should go," she was about to say, but Draco was faster. Before the bottle had even hit the floor, Draco had reached his wife and swept her up over his shoulder.

"Have you completely lost it?" he said, but the edge was gone in his voice. Moving rapidly, they were out the front door before the bourbon had finished pooling and flooding across the carpet.

There was a silence now in the room, Dina and Spencer sitting in a shocked stupor.

"What do we do?" Dina finally managed, completely shaken by these events and yet so glad to have Spencer by her side. Despite being such a headstrong and stubborn witch, Dina was now looking into her fiance's eyes with complete unquestioning trust.

Spencer had been about to jump to his feet, ready to get in between whatever was about to happen (Gryffindor instincts), but the other blonde was faster. "Draco-" He said in a warning to manage his temper, but Draco's voice was calmer and so Spencer relaxed, turning back to his fiancee.

"Uh-" Spencer waffled as she turned to him with such trust before a wry smile crossed his face. "Well, I don't think we should step outside onto the battlefield just yet, at least."

He cupped her face with his right hand, running his thumb across her lips. "We sure became the mature couple, huh? I'm proud of us." The usual situation was Spencer and Dina arguing loudly while Parvati and Draco shared glances. This was a refreshing change.

Parvati had given a startled gasp as Draco had picked her up. She knew what she had just done in a tantrum had been wrong, but she was so very upset, that when he put her down, outside in the hall, she just covered her face with her hands, not looking at him.

"What?" She snapped, though the venom in her voice was much diffused by her small, shaking frame.

"Do you know that I love you?" Draco suddenly asked. His eyes were dark with intensity. Taking each of her tiny wrists in his hands, he wrenched her hands away from her face. "You seem to forget that so often." Now his voice was sad. Then, anger returned. "I am not leaving this." He wished to Merlin that she would stop crying. "I have every intention of... of..." he let go of her and walked away. He could hear the ticking of the clock in the entrance hallway mirroring the pulse of his blood. "...of having a full family with you, Parvati. This isn't me being a teenager and not knowing how to cope with something serious. When I married you, I committed to having everything with you. I want everything. With you." He slid down to the floor and sat with his back against the wall. "But we've only been married a year. And I know what the tabloids say. But it's really not an excuse when I say the timing isn't right. I know you could be a great mother any time. And yes, if you were pregnant now, we wouldn't fall apart. But I don't want to just get by." He looked down at his hands. "I want to be a good father, Parvati. I know you think I'll be good regardless-- that sounds like something you'd say, but I know myself. I wouldn't be there in the way that I want to. Do you understand that? I have my own visions of parenthood as well."

Back in the bourbon soaked living room, Dina couldn't help but smile as Spencer held her face. She leaned into the warmth of his hand.

"I am proud of us too," she echoed, shutting her eyes briefly. "Love makes people do crazy things," she commented, referring to Draco and Parvati. "It's weird, witnessing a fight like that. Despite all the anger, you know that it's ultimately because they love each other. I wonder what people thought when we fought... especially our epic throwdowns during Hogwarts," she laughed wryly.

"Ow!" Parvati said loudly as he pulled her hands away from her face, thought it didn't really hurt and she was just being purposefully difficult. Despite this, her tear filled eyes followed him as he walked, and her stomach flip-flopped as her husband hit the nail right on the nose. It had been years and he had been incredible, but years of uncertainty and heartbreak had made Parvati constantly craving reassurance, and a baby would really....really cinch their love. "You would be a good father!" She argued, stomping her foot a little. "You'll be amazing, just like you are at being a husband!"

She too sat on the floor. His rational tone made it hard to find something to argue about. So, her anger left and her sadness returned. "You cursed at me-" Parvati reminded him, a sob in her throat, "It was mean." Yet, as she said this, she was already crawling to him, tumbling onto him like obstinate cat.

Inside, Spencer laughed as well. "I think they knew exactly what we were covering up, Bread, and that's why none of those bastards were surprised when we got together." They could laugh over that now, but at the time they had been really confused over not getting a bigger reaction.

He leaned in, a seductive tone in his voice, "Tell me, what were you thinking during our epic fights? Hm? You just loved me so much you could barely even stand it, huh?"

"I wouldn't be though," Draco nearly raised his voice again, catching himself in time. "I'm not being self deprecating. It literally takes every fiber of my being right now to be the husband you deserve. I have nothing left for a child right now." He was trying to communicate that this was a fact, not an emotional evaluation. "Who knows what will happen if I let you raise them completely on your own." He was joking now, anger diminishing just as quickly as it rose. They were similar in that respect. Volatile, kindred hearts. "They'll crow on about pink and..." he trailed off, unable to continue.

"I'm sorry I cursed. But sometimes I wish you'd... pay more attention to my work. Instead of viewing it as a distraction that gets in the way of my time with you. I understand why that approach may seem rational and loving to you, but it makes me feel as if you don't understand the gravity of what I do. It's just silly men and silly numbers to you. Or..." he sought to unleash the feelings he had been repressing for so long now. "Or that you view in simple broad strokes. That this is all just life. That the power and money we have is so easy to maintain, or just some sort of song and dance that I endure on a daily basis. I'm different from my father. I'm not coasting along... I'm creating things. I'm trying to learn new things. I'm trying to be a better man in all ways."

And back to the less dramatic couple:

"No, I sincerely wanted to slug you in the face," a bit of old Dina resurfaced. "I might have secretly and unknowingly liked you, but you were outlandishly rude to me at times." She edged away from his body with a prim sniff, although a smile played at her lips. "You know, you really did hurt my feelings a lot," she admitted softly, lowering her gaze. She knew she had dealt out her own share of harsh words, but she always believed that Spencer had inflicted more pain than she ever could have.

Parvati listened to her husband pour his thoughts out. Her red-rimmed eyes were like the tides of the ocean, swelling and filling with tears that had yet to fall. “Oh, Draco-“ She uttered, “You’re nothing like your father, I know that. You are a better man. And that really isn’t how I see your work, I mean, I understand that maybe it feels like that, but I am so proud of you every day.” She took his hands into hers and squeezed tight. Parvati truly gushed about Draco’s intelligence and knack for business to everyone, except perhaps Draco himself. “I collect every single news article about you, you know? I scrapbook it – all your victories and battles. I appreciate every unique idea you have. I suppose I don’t really tell you that often enough … I guess because I think that maybe if I told you how much I like what you do, that you might use that as an excuse to do it more and forget me.” She couldn’t meet his eyes just yet.

“The thing is, you have this other thing to focus on, to work at. A whole separate life from me. Can you not understand how that makes me jealous sometimes? I don’t have that – and don’t say my charities are equivalent – it’s different. I want to create things too, Draco. I am so lonely here without you, I can’t even describe it-“ Her nose stuffed up, Parvati’s voice took on a clouded tone. “A baby would give me something to focus on, someone else to love, something to give me purpose.” Crystalline tears clumped her eyelashes before falling. “I’m just lonely-“ She smiled awkwardly, running the tips of her fingers beneath her eyes. "I understand you want to wait."

Spencer meanwhile, was taken back. “What? No way – the infallible Dina Dunstan was hurt by me?” He gave her a quirky little smile before it faded. Her face looked so earnest that Spencer was perplexed. “Hey, come on-“ He reached out and tugged at her hair, “I was just pulling your pigtails at the time, and I think we were fairly even. I seem to remember it all starting because you made some snide comment about how much effort I put into my hair.” He was a boy and therefore mentally blocked, for Spencer had been much, much harder on Dina than she was on him.

Parvati wasn't the only one who feared certain things about her significant other. Draco had always worried that Parvati only cared about the end game. His successes, his awards, the big projects that managed to draw in a big profit. But for the day to day grind? The stress of going in day in and day out? That was the part where he truly needed her. And that was the part he feared she didn't care about.

"I wouldn't ever forget about you," he sighed, exasperated. Exasperated because it seemed so ridiculous to him. "When have I ever only cared about work?" Rubbing his forehead, he took a deep breath in.

"I understand where you're coming from, Parvati. But I don't want a baby to give you purpose. That's--" he couldn't help but laugh bitterly,"that's definitely not why I would want to have a baby with you. I don't want it to be a substitute for something. A baby should be brought into the world because room has been made for it, it shouldn't exist to fill a void. Please," he implored. "I just need you to be patient. Right now I need you to be there for me. I can't take on work by myself. I need to know that you care about the little intricacies of what I do. Because your opinion matters."

In the living room, Dina flushed an embarrassed pink. It was really the first time she had admitted to being hurt by Spencer. And yes, he had been much, much harder on her.

"I guess it was just tough to swallow since there were feelings, somewhere deep down inside... and no matter how much I hurt you, you would always have Meg to fall back on." She managed to meet his eyes and tried to smile easily. Instead she looked a little awkward. "And then you'd make fun of the guys I dated, and... and... I don't know. Somehow you always made me feel so foolish. And then, at other times... you'd do something really sweet. It was confusing."

Draco always misunderstood his little tornado of a wife. She loved him so dearly that even the very fact that he put on a tie before going to work both interested her and made her proud.

"Draco!" She too was exasperated, "You really cannot see things from my perspective? When you work really long hours and come home grumpy and tired, I know that you're stressed and that you care about me, but sometimes it's hard for me to swallow. You always get me when I'm fresh and longing for you, but I never get you that way."

"A baby is to give me purpose!" She argued, getting upset again, "All I've ever wanted is to be a wife and mother - there's nothing wrong with that! Maybe you don't understand, but as a witch there is a void I have without one." Her expression was intense and angry. "It's just I notice that void a lot more when you're not around or very bust."

Parvati's nose had truly turned pink by this point and she rubbed at her eyes. "I do care, Draco - didn't I just say that? Why do you think I listen to you dictate memos every night? Or help you plan outfits to wear to board meetings? I want to be there for you, it's all I ever want! What can I do? Tell me, please." She was earnest and serious, a little horrified that perhaps Draco hadn't thought her a very good wife all this time. That perhaps she had failed him in someway.

"Meg?" Spencer scoffed, almost having completely forgotten his petite ex. "So, what about Meg? I didn't exactly run crying to her after we argued. How could she have been a fall back?"

"Those guys," His voice took a dark turn, "Those guys didn't deserve you, that's why I made fun of them. I wanted you to see that you deserved better. That I knew you deserved better. Perhaps I didn't go about it the right way-" He contemplated, thinking back to how he used to endless mock her about her boyfriend of the week.

Dina flushed an even deeper color. "Well I didn't know that you didn't go to her after. But the point was that...'

She would never admit that, the point was he had a serious girlfriend to validate himself with while she had only recreationally dated. It was a foolish, unproductive way of thinking. Which is why she would never tell him.

"...that anyways, yes, you shouldn't have gone about it that way. It's all old news anyways," she dismissed, "I just wonder what things would have been like if we hadn't met when we were so young... so impulsive and temperamental." This time she did relax a little. "But then again, I think growing up together so to speak was important. Do you think we would have ended up the same people if we hadn't been friends?"

--

"I know you care, in your way," Draco replied. "I care in my way too. Maybe that's why all of these fights keep happening. I understand why you joke about me and my work but... what I need from you is to not reflexively fall back on demanding more from me. I know maybe you're afraid that, if you don't demand, I won't give. But I will. I always will. I always think of you. But more often than not, I need you to..." he searched for the words in his head. "To encourage me to pick work first. To worry about work first. Because when I choose to worry about you first, I want it to feel like it was my choice to, not because I was nagged into it. I will never forget about you, Parvati. I could never neglect you. I need you to trust in me."

"And if you need a project, why don't you open that Potions shop you had wanted a while back? I think we have the money for it now."

"Draco," Parvati shifted off his lap and onto the floor beside him, feeling very far away from this manor, from her husband. She knew for sure that a baby wouldn't be coming anytime soon and frowned, trying to puzzle through what had happened. "I understand what you're saying, but you're essentially asking me not to ask anything of you, lest it be construed as nagging. And although you think you could never neglect me, I have to tell you, that it feels like that to me sometimes."

Practiced and perfect, she suddenly gave him a brilliant smile, "But, I hear what you're saying and I will be more encouraging." She would try, because she loved him dearly and understood his feelings now, though perhaps her own needs would go unfulfilled because she was a witch, and she was used to the inequality in love. And, afterall, she was used to waiting. "I promise to be less demanding."

"You're drunk." She returned flatly, "We've always had the money for it - you said it was too much like working before."

-

"No, what was the point about Meg?" Spencer pushed, curious. He was unsure to why his fiancee's face seemed to sad and odd all at once. "Why did it matter that she was my girlfriend at the time?"

"I think meeting then helped us a lot, it let us date without any games." Though they had plenty of games in the 10 plus years leading up to that point. "Without my stabilizing influence you'd have probably run rampant through England - a wild child if I ever did see one." He teased. "I'd have to tame you and it would have taken forever" He squeezed her side.

Draco groaned.

"I cannot believe you just pulled the Pureblood wife smile. Merlin, why'd you have to smash that bourbon," he muttered to himself, very much wanting a drink. "I'm not asking you to say nothing, I'm asking you to balance it out with support. As in, try to make the demands equal to the support," he tried explaining, wanting to wipe that stupid fake smile off of her face. "Why do you even bother faking that? You know I see right through it. It's rather insulting," he sulked, wondering if his wife would ever cease to be a mystery.

"Just because we have money floating around doesn't mean it's a good time to invest some of it," he rolled his eyes. "I'm never too drunk to know where I stand financially. But I honestly think it would be a good idea. What do you think?"

-

If Dina had to tell Spencer the truth, she certainly wasn't going to be sullen about it. Closing her eyes briefly, she took a deep breath and then exhaled.

"Well," she began loudly, her almond eyes drifting away. "You had a serious girlfriend. You had Meg." She managed to train her gaze back towards him, and was resolved in her admission. "I didn't have a serious boyfriend. So when I made fun of you, I felt that it inflicted less pain, because no matter how terribly I painted you, you had proof that someone loved you despite what I said. I didn't have that same proof," she concluded. "I know it's a stupid way to think but... but..." she tried to conclude with something wise, but ended up trailing off awkwardly. Pursing her lips, she tensed her body, waiting for his response.

Parvati's smile tilted a little as Draco saw right through it, before falling into a pout. "Well," She was beginning to defend herself before thinking better of it, "I am a pureblood wife, it's how I smile. I know you see through it, but most men don't, it's how we were raised, I can't help it." Parvati often wondered how, as kids, all the boys and girls were well versed with the routines of their pureblood society, yet as they grew up, the men inevitable turned into their fathers and forgot. Draco was different. They were different.

Her lips plumped into a pout and she wriggled her way back into his arms. Sitting face to face on his lap, as he stretched his legs out she touched noses. "Okay, I will. And in return, I'm asking you to remember, even when you're knee deep in work, to at least give me a little cuddle once in awhile, okay? Without me asking? And...that we can talk about a baby again in a few months, a honest talk, a reassessment, without you avoiding it?"

A real smile threatened her lips, "Really? You wouldn't mind? And I'd have full control? Not just something you puppeteer from the shadows?"

Then, in a tiny voice, "I'm sorry I smashed your bourbon." Tears suddenly sprung again to her eyes and she buried her face in his neck, suddenly very sad over her earlier actions. Parvati and her ever changing heart was indeed a mystery it would take Draco his whole life to figure out.

Meanwhile, inside, Spencer's face was nothing short of exasperated. "You realise that was in fact all your own mind's concoction, right? And besides, we were kids - I can't really speak for the seriousness of the love she and I had."

He tapped a finger beneath her chin to lift her face to his. "Also, you didn't know it, but no matter how terribly I painted you, beneath it all, I loved you. Silly witch." Spencer gave her that knee-shaking smile. "But I warn you, I will be even more unforgiving if you ever take up smoking again."

"You better help it," Draco replied, but the warmth was slowly returning to his eyes. His eyebrow twitched slightly, and he self consciously lifted a hand to calm it. It usually happened every time he felt a rush of love for his wife after an intense argument. Draco was used to holding onto anger forever. Feeling it dissipate so quickly was still so unnatural to him.

"Okay," he agreed. "We'll both try our best. And I promise on November 1st we will talk about a baby seriously." November 1st was a date where things would be calmer. In all sincerity, Draco was looking to have a baby with Parvati. Maybe even two. It just genuinely wasn't the right time.

"Well, you know how I am shadow king of the universe so..." he joked, before straightening up seriously. "It would be your own. Money would be allocated into an account strictly for the shop. But that means no bail outs either. The starting amount is all you get. It would be a real project. My side investments only get what my accountant and I agree on, I never get to pool in extra if I get in trouble. You'll have to follow the same rules, okay?" He knew Parvati could be fiscally minded, but if she owned a shop, he feared she would get carried away with the interior decorator and merchandise.

-

"You were together a long time," Dina replied, although not to argue against him. "Well, if that was the case, you really exemplified how there is a thin line between love and hate," she said wryly. "Yes, yes," she sighed. "No spring jackets in the winter either, no matter how darling I look... No dog ear-ing books, no drinks without coasters," she continued the list with a mischievous smile. "No licking my fingers if I'm sharing popcorn with friends."

Parvati giggled at Draco’s eyebrow twitch and all the anger and resentment drained out of her system. She pushed forward and cuddled him tight, filled with love. Suddenly, she wanted nothing more than to go upstairs with him and show him exactly how much she loved him. Heck, they could stay right here and she’d show him if it wasn’t for their guests in the next room.

“November.” She repeated dreamily, now completely focused on him. With some sort of plan in place, Parvati could relax.
“Yes, sir.” Draco’s wife rolled his eyes at his firm discussion, but a sheepish smile pulled at her lips. She had, in fact, already started planning what the boutique store would look like: Royal blue walls, floating candles everywhere, gold cauldrons. “That sounds fine. I have so many ideas already in terms of advertising and customer base. Father will help of course and perhaps you can speak to Professor Snape? George might have good location ideas as well, he and Fred were thinking about a second store a few months ago.”

She blushed, then. “Do you forgive me for the bourbon?” Parvati pressed, needing a verbal resolution, “I was so embarrassing. How can we face Dina and Spencer?” She buried herself more into her husband, hands clinging to him. “I was just so tipsy and cross. And I love you so much it makes me crazy sometimes.”

“Hey,” Spencer scowled, “It takes two to tango, Bread.” He’d forgotten his old nickname for her, now that he had said it a few times he decided he rather liked it. “You know, it had occurred to me once, in fourth year, to ask you out. We were in Charms and you went insane simply because I corrected your wand technique during some spell and became so sullen.” Spencer laughed at the memory, “But then later you came and apologized and brought me cookies. Cookies from the Great Hall, no less! It was nothing special, but it was cute. But then I thought about how if we split up it’d make the following years so awkward so I didn’t.”

As Dina crowed on sarcastically about Spencer’s rulings, it worked against her. “No drinks without coasters? Huh. That is actually a good idea. Especially on the apothecary table we just bought. I think that can stick.”
“I still can’t believe you thought dog-earing books was normal – are you an animal? Merlin.”

Of course a flare of jealousy came when Parvati mentioned George. But Draco, held his tongue.

"Okay," he replied evenly, "You can ask George about location ideas. This is your store." Wildly, he had the desire to open up a competing store and to select his own locations. He would then turn to Parvati and say, See? If only you had asked for MY recommendations. But they had fought enough tonight.

As for the bourbon, though, "Well..." he half joked. "I suppose I'll live without it. But I really don't know how to make it up to those two. I know they're old friends but... that's not us. Right?" He squeezed her hand thoughtfully. "I don't know how we're going to maintain our composure while convincing them we're not lunatics."

-

Dina rolled her eyes, but blushed at the cookie memory.

"Yeah right, as if that was in your head." But she didn't want to drag this "did you like me or didn't you?" scheme. If she thought back really hard, she could still remember the way he used to look at Meg. But that didn't matter now. "The important thing is you like me now. It's honestly a little oppressive," she couldn't help but add cheekily, breaking into a fit of giggles and trying to scramble away. "It's like you're obsessed or something," she added, raising her hands to shield herself from his surely violent response.

Just then, Draco and Parvati returned to the room, holding hands and looking rather burdened.

Spencer watched Dina through narrowed eyes as she burst into giggles and cheekily scrambled off his lap. Unlike she expected, he didn't make a move for her, instead sat still, eyeing her carefully.

When she looked up from her hand shield he gave her a flat look with a dark tilt of his lips. "I'll show you oppressed-" He was about dart toward her when their friends re-entered.

Rolling his eyes, Spencer threatened out of the corner of his lips, "You, I'll deal with later."

Half hiding behind her husband, Parvati looked wildly flustered. "Hi you two....I'm so sorry for how I acted...how we both acted ... totally ridiculous. I really am very happy for you if you are pregnant!! It's going to be such fun!!"

"And I'm also sorry for what I said to Draco, I was being totally unfair." She gave her husband a starry look, "So, can you guys forgive us. I was so tipsy I just made that completely into us."

"You know that's not how we normally are," Draco said in addition to his wife's comment. "It's just a bit of a...topic, since it's something that's very, very important to us. It's really my fault for not understanding this issue sooner and talking about it before hand. But now we're good," he squeezed her hand.

Dina was almost glad to escape Spencer's playful wrath-- but there was a tiny part of her that wanted to see what he would have done.

"I understand..." Dina began, eying Spencer in case he decided to surprise attack her.

"You're going to be wonderful parents," Draco congratulated sincerely. "I know you're not sure but... if that is the case, you'll have a very lucky child."

"And you'll be great parents one day too," Dina replied. "Your child will be very special."

"Yes," Draco agreed, "Their only downfall will be an uncontrollable attraction to pink and sparkles."

Parvati smiled up at her husband adoringly, shyly burying her face half in his shoulder as she watched her friends. "Very good, as long as you can forgive us."

Spencer eyed Dina innocently, stretching his arms out as he rested his palms on the back of his neck. "Nothing to forgive. Well, except maybe the waste of deliciously good bourbon." He joked. "But yes, you will be great parents. I think we'll all have a good time of it, now or a little later, whichever fate has in store."

Parvati made a face at her husband over his comment on pink, "Well, you're the one who was attracted to me, the very definition of pink, so I'm supposing they'll inherit that from you?"

With warm laughs, Spencer slid his arm around Dina's shoulders. "We should get going though." He nudged Draco, "I'm sure you have some making up to do, and this little lady and I have some unfinished business to attend to-" His grin was bright. "She's gotten rather saucy with this possible pregnancy thing, you see. It's really a problem and I have to deal with it asap." He knew being so brazen would cause Dina to flush and he grinned at her. Checkmate, love.

Well played, Spencer. Well played.

Dina could be as bratty as she liked, but as soon as Spencer mentioned "dealing" with her in any way, she became awkward and embarrassed.

"You're so weird," was the only thing she could think of saying. That was basically the only thing she ever did say when Spencer managed to disarm her. Trying to look busy with her hair or something like that, the potentially pregnant Asian refused to see any of her friends' reactions.

"I think I was attracted to you in SPITE of the pink," Draco replied easily. "And in spite of those gigantic insect sunglasses you liked to wear. Honestly, I was such an open minded guy," he shook his head gravely. "Quite progressive and all that."

Dina recovered from her embarrassment enough to snort in laughter.

"Well we should go home anyways," she touched her fiance's arm. "But I'm glad we got to share the news with you."

"We'll be sure to spoil the mini brat with tons of presents when it arrives," Draco assured them. "We'll get our bourbon slinging ways out of control by then," he shot a look at his little firecracker wife.

The four friends said their goodbyes, and all was well in their little corner of the wizarding world once again.
