Who: Alicia Spinnet & Mandy Brocklehurst
When: Sunday, October 10, 2005
Where: Mandy/Serena's flat, for now
What: Alicia & Mandy hang out & catch up

After resting up from her second whirlwind trip to London within a week, Alicia decided it was time for her to go visit Mandy. She hadn't really gotten much opportunity to catch up with her friend since the other girl had just arrived back from a plant-hunting expedition not too long ago herself. She couldn't wait to fill her in on everything that had happened in Veritas while she was gone. Granted, to most people it wouldn't seem like a lot, but for a sleepy little town like Veritas it was was quite exciting. Also, she wanted to hear about all of the rare and unusual plants Mandy had gone about tracking down.

Apparating to the front door of the building Mandy's flat was in, Alicia realized she didn't even know if the girl was home now or not. Still, she supposed it would be the best place to start looking. She approached the front door and gave it three short raps.

Mandy's schedule was usually pretty steady, and she was more of an early riser, but last night she had stayed up late going through old research and studying new books she had ordered. Before she knew it, it was late in the evening, and late waking up. Getting up groggily, she had been heading towards the kitchen in her green fleece pajamas when she heard a knock at the door.

Now who could that be? Spencer and anyone else who would stop by had a key to the apartment. Well, except Serena's boyfriend. But the girl must have surely been at work by now.

Scrubbing at her eyelids with the back of her hand, she wandered over to the front door and unlocked it, peering out into the bright light of outside.

"Oh, Alicia! Hi," she greeted, surprised, "I wasn't expecting you?"

Or was she? What day was it?

Oh, bugger. As Alicia observed Mandy standing in front of her in her pajamas, looking like she'd just woken up, she knew she probably should have let her know she was coming ahead of time. That would have been the polite thing to do. Plus, what if Mandy already had plans for today?

"Hey!" she greeted her back, an apologetic look on her face. "No, I just decided to drop by, but I really should have let you know. I'm sorry. I didn't wake you up, did I?"

"No worries, Alicia, come on in, don't mind my awful attire. I just slept in a bit later than usual. You're always welcome, you know that." Mandy didn't mind Alicia at all, the woman was like the older sister she never had.

She shuffled the older girl in and shut the door, "Make yourself comfortable. Do you want water or anything?" She scratched at the crown of her head, her ponytail a complete mess.

"Thanks," Alicia smiled as she stepped inside. "Oh, no, I'm fine. And don't even worry about being in your pajamas," she laughed. "That's normally my Sunday morning wardrobe, too."

She perched on the arm of the couch and glanced around the flat. It didn't seem that anyone else was home. "Anyway, I just dropped by to see if you wanted to hang out today. I haven't really seen you since you got back."

Mandy still made her way to the kitchen to grab a glass of water for herself, "Oh, and you didn't wake me. I was already shuffling around," she said, with a sudden yawn. She shook her head, her eyebrows raising from the fact that she was still trying to disperse the sleepiness, "Oh boy."

She smiled, pulling a jug from the fridge, "Of course, I'd love to hang out. I haven't been doing much, just staying in and keeping up with research. What about you? Didn't you go somewhere?" she said, trying to recall when it clicked, "London, yeah?"

You know what they say about yawns -- they're contagious. Just a few seconds after Mandy yawned, Alicia found herself covering her mouth to stifle a yawn as well. "Gah, now you're making me feel sleepy!" she exclaimed with a grin.

"Great!" Alicia replied, hopping off the couch. "We need to get you away from all those plants for a little bit."

Nodding, she confirmed, "Yep, I went twice, actually. Both sort of spur of the moment, but I had a great time!"

"Sorry about that," Mandy grinned ruefully, taking a sip of the cool water and feeling slightly refreshed.

"You can never pull me away from my plants," the young girl said astutely, picking up a book that had been sitting innocently on the counter. She clutched it to her chest.

"Well, that's always nice. As long as you enjoyed yourself," Mandy answered, plopping herself down on the couch opposite of the older girl. She set her water down on a coaster set on the coffee table.

"I knowww, but I can try!" she joked. "I suppose you can look at plants along the way to wherever we decide to go. You know, tell me their scientific name and what uses they have." As much as she liked to tease her friend about her love of plants, she honestly thought it was pretty cool she was so passionate about it.

"Yeah... I got to see my new nephew who is the most adorable thing ever and I got some new clothes!" she beamed. She knew people probably got sick of hearing her gush about her nephew, but she couldn't help it.

"What about you, though? I want to hear about your trip!"

"I can do that if you'd like," Mandy said, balancing precariously on whether she would be able to refrain herself otherwise. She probably wouldn't. She does get rather excited.

"That's splendid," she said with a smile as Alicia's excitement, "You've got yourself a bloke to show off to, now?" she asked, rather bluntly. That's how Mandy always asked things.

"Oh, my trip, oh lord," she said, recalling the events. It had been tedious, but very much rewarding, "Two month expedition! Searching for this Angar's tongue. It's sticky properties are supposed to be a protective sort of salve for wounds. They're looking into other possibilities, and wanted to study it more. This time we only brought back a few samples but I think we'll be going on another one soon to study how it thrives, how it'll fair in a different climate," she rambled, rather integrated into it.

"Sure, go ahead. It's always great to learn new things," Alicia shrugged.

"Oh, no. No new guy for me," she shook her head, staring down at the floor for a second. "But new clothes are always nice," she added, looking back up.

Raising her eyebrows, Alicia asked incredulously, "It really took you two months to find it? And you'll be going back soon to study it more? So... do you just sit and watch it or what?" Alicia couldn't imagine having to watch a plant for that long.

"None, really?" Mandy questioned. Mandy herself hadn't been interested in finding a bloke, but Alicia was unlike her and the younger one thought that she was nice enough that she should have someone make her happy, "What happened to that Fred character? I thought you two got along rather well," she said absently, trying to recall the last time Alicia had spoken of any man. It had been quite awhile.

"Well, our trusted navigator navigated us the wrong way," Mandy said with a roll of her eyes.

"Nope, none," she confirmed. Then, after a brief pause, added, "Well, I did talk to this nice guy at the ball Parvati threw, but I don't know how much that really means." How pathetic did that sound? She'd talked to him. Big deal. He probably didn't even remember her.

"Fred? Oh, he's my best friend!" she told Mandy, perking up considerably. "So we did, and still do, get along fabulously. But, we haven't been more than friends in years. In fact, he's dating your roommate. Did you not know?"

"Oh, no!" Alicia couldn't help but laugh. "How awful. I'd have been quite irked about that."

"Well, men like to talk as much as the women do," she shrugged, leafing through the book she had snatched off the counter, "Did you like him, then?" she asked.

Mandy scrunched her eyebrows in sudden concern. Serena was? Was that the same bloke then? Huh.. She really didn't pay him any mind when he had popped in, since the two always left in a hurry or disappeared to her room. Sure, she could tell you the difference immediately between the Devil's Snare and a Flitterbloom, but the guys her friend's dated? No how, no way.

"You know I'm terrible with those kinds of things," she answered with a wave of her hand.

"Yes, most of the team was. Just because the trek through the jungles were sporatic. Weather being dry one day and completely soaking the next few. So yes, they're sending a team of researchers to go out and make more notes of it. I might go along just for the samples."

"I don't know. I mean, he seemed very nice and I enjoyed talking to him, but I'm not really expecting anything to come from it," Alicia admitted. Actually, she wasn't really sure she wanted anything to come of it. She'd spent so long keeping new people she met from getting to know her too intimately, that she didn't know if she was even capable of having any sort of romantic relationships anymore.

"I'd think he'd be pretty hard to miss, though, what with his bright red hair," she teased.

"Ugh, how miserable," Alicia sympathized at Mandy's mention of the changing weather conditions. "Well, I hope the next trip is better for you. Let me know when you'll be leaving so I can be sure to send you off in style! Do you know how long it will be for?"

"Well, whatever will be, will be," Mandy shrugged indifferently. Mandy had never really dated, herself. (Surprise). But with two, technically three older brothers - what with Spencer and all - it would have been a chore (except to David, who quirked that even if she wanted to date women, that would be completely fine so he knows that his little sister isn't completely hopeless.)

Well, red hair wasn't equivalent to plant flowers, so the blonde wouldn't keep note, except, "Aren't there a few of them with hair like that around?"

"It shouldn't be too bad this time around. Now that we've located it, I'll just be on to get samples and full specimens, so, it'll be a bit easier," she said.

"Yeah, I guess you're right," Alicia agreed, mirroring Mandy's shrug. She remembered that Christopher had said he might stop by to see her at work sometime. She could always go visit him as well, so... who knew? "What about you?" she continued in a teasing tone, turning the tables. "You were gone for two months or so. Plenty of time to get to know someone better. Anyone you fancy?"

Letting out a little laugh, she echoed, "Yes, a few. Fred's got six siblings, all with the trademark bright red Weasley hair."

"And you won't be gone as long?" Alicia had missed Mandy when she'd been gone on this last trip -- she was like a little sister to her.

"Oh please, I thought you knew me better than that?" Though there was a bloke on Mandy's expedition team who had seemed interested and liked to talk to her most. And well, if it were anybody she could get along with, it'd be someone from work. But she doesn't pick up on these things.

"See, no wonder I wouldn't be able to tell the difference!" she said, flabbergasted.

"I shouldn't be, well, I won't be going for a while. At least another month or so," she answered, leaning forward and collecting her cup for a sip.

"So Spencer mentioned this ball as well. Didn't you go with somebody, then?" she inquired.

Raising her eyebrows, Alicia lifted her hands in front of her as if to apologize. "Okay, sorry, just thought I'd ask. Things can always change, you know."

"Well, I don't know that all of them live here in Veritas," she admitted. "And you certainly wouldn't confuse Fred with his sister, Ginny. Ron maybe if you just glanced at them, but I can see you getting him and George mixed up. They're twins, after all."

"Good. Plenty of time to hang out then," she nodded. "Speaking of, where did you want to go today?"

"I went with George. Not as a date, but just so neither of us would have to show up alone. I'm sorry you missed it! It was a lot of fun."

"Not any time soon," Mandy said, pretty sure that she wasn't going to change her mind about guys in the blink of an eye.

"Twins? Well see, I'm not particularly good with names, it could have been either one," she remarked, throwing her hands in an 'I don't know' sort of fashion.

"Hmm, cafe, bookstore, bakery? You seem to have already done a lot of shopping," she suggested.

Mandy wasn't a fan of dressing up; lots of dresses seemed itchy or hard to move in, "Well, that's still good. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself."

"Alriiiiight," Alicia relented, knowing that if she kept up her teasing she would most likely annoy her friend.

"How about the cafe and bookstore?" she suggested. "We can get something to eat and then stop by the bookshop. Or the other way around -- whatever you want to do first. I know Megan's really excited about that famous author who's going to be here in a few days, so maybe I'll check out the book she wrote and pick up a copy or something."

Well, she would only be mildly annoyed. Why did she have to be interested in guys to function right, anyway?

"Sounds swell," the blonde agreed, "Let me just change into something more suitable for outdoors and then we can go?" Mandy set the book she was holding down on the coffee table and stood up.

"Alright," Alicia nodded in agreement. "I'll just be... looking at all the lovely plants you have around here. But don't worry, I won't touch any of them." She wasn't entirely sure what all kinds of plants Mandy had, so she figured it was better to be safe than sorry.

"It's a little chilly out," she added helpfully. "So you might want a jacket or at least long sleeves."
