About: | This is a community specifically designed for those InsaneJournal users who are friends of the Vanir, whether Vanir-focused or otherwise curious and appreciative. Please read the user info before applying to this group: This community is not meant to snark or bash the Aesir or their followers, but to honor the Vanic Deities and those who honor them. There is a lot of talk about Odin and Thor within the Northern Tradition, but far less honor given to the Vanir. "Vanatru" is a word fraught with controversy within Nordic religion, most often because of the argument that there are only 3 known Vanir (Frey, Freyja, and Njord) and they were assimilated into the Aesir. The counter-argument can be made that Nerthus is alluded to in Ynglinga Saga, and for a war to be waged between the Aesir and Vanir, there were most likely more than 3 Vanir. Besides the obvious Vanir nature of Frey, Freyja, and Njord, a strong case can be made for these Deities as Vanir: --Freyja's sisters (e.g. Eir) --Freyja's daughters Gersemi and Hnossa --Gullveig/Heid --Holda --Ullr/Wuldor --Idunna --Sif The Vanir are very much a part of the natural world, whereas the Aesir are the Deities of civilization. The Vanir are intrinsically tied to the mysteries of sex and death, to the fertility of the field as well as the creativity of the soul. Because this is an LJ community that discusses the Vanir, the rules of frithgard and hospitality apply here. Trolling is not tolerated, and flaming is ill advised. If you have a disagreement with someone's UPG or personal practice, it is fine to note that you disagree or your POV differs, but harsh criticism and insults are not allowed. If you have interpersonal problems with another member, that is your issue, not ours: leave it off the community. Those who are in violation of this rule will be warned for a first offense, and permanently banned the second time. Also, in keeping with the rules of frith, and "Vanic values": This is a fully non-racist and non-homophobic/transphobic community. If you believe that the Northern religion is for whites only, do not apply to this community. If you believe that GLBTQ folk are "deviant", do not apply to this community. Political discussions (e.g. elections, topics such as abortion and climate change) should largely be kept off this community, as many of us have differing views on the matters of government, and not everyone lives in the United States. (One of the maintainers is Canadian, for example.) You do not have to be Asatru or Heathen to apply to this community. We fully welcome Norse and Anglo-Saxon Pagans, Northern Tradition Pagans, Norse Wiccans, and Seax-Wica to this community. We even welcome those entirely outside the Northern Tradition who want to learn more, provided they can be respectful to the community. Appropriate topics of discussion can be anything pertaining to the Vanir, whether it be essays on research or personal devotional practice, rituals, pictures of altars, shrines, statues, jewelry, etc, recipes for sacred food, spells, and so on. We are Lore-oriented as well as UPG-oriented (Unverified Personal Gnosis). Magical and woo-types are most welcome here. That being said, there should be room to respect different UPGs, by "different" meaning "different from yours". Deity X giving personal revelation to you, does not mean it is law for any and all people. We also appreciate a sense of humor, including the more "naughty" side of humor (we do worship sex Gods, after all). We ask that anything sexually explicit be friends-locked to the community, and/or marked with a NSFW tag (Not Safe For Work). One last note: While we try to keep this community as sane, frithful, and drama-free as possible, in the interests of a positive community, please address any questions, comments, or concerns about the community, by commenting on this post provided you understand that --if you are known for trolling other communities, your application for membership will be denied. We will not have this community degrade into flame wars. Be positive, or leave. --If you are known for having made racist, homophobic, or otherwise bigoted statements elsewhere, your application for membership will be denied or you will be removed from this community. --If your LJ account is less than a month old, and/or you have no mutual friends, you will not be admitted into this community. Also, please do note this community is about the Vanir. Again, you do not have to be Vanic-focused to join the community, but discussions about the nature of Odin (for example) or the ongoing debate as to whether or not it's acceptable to worship etins is considered off-topic and inappropriate to the theme of the community. While there are Asatruar in this community, this is not "an Asatru community" and discussions specific to Asatru, e.g. the Nine Noble Virtues, are also considered off-topic and inappropriate to the theme of the community. We're not saying you can't talk about these things ever or that it's "doing it wrong", but this is a Vanic community; discussions should be on topic to the worthscipe of the Vanir, Their custom and thew. To all who come in frith, be welcome and may the Gods of the World bless you in the good life. | ||||||||||
