I was going out to pick up some supplies for Hector (who is doing very well, thank you for asking after him!) and saw this.

I found it profound, terrifying, and oddly accurate.

I've decided my apartment is terribly lonely. Which is generally nice, but I'm a social creature at heart, and even when I'm reading or something, I'd still rather do it in company than on my own. So I've done something brash and exciting and got myself a kitten.

Cut for image, warning: kitten. )

I've named him Bazin. It just came to me, though I'm not sure why, but there you have it. He's blind, so I've got all sorts of jingly toys. He's lively when he wants to play, but mostly he's content to curl up in a lap or on a warm spot on the carpet. And it gives me reason to constantly chatter, he likes to follow me around.

In any case, I'm smitten. I'm sorry to all the lovely ladies and handsome men, but my heart has been taken by Bazin and I don't think I'll ever get it back.

Friends, listeners. I have joined you in that dream world I've heard about so very often. And I'm afraid my initiation was not a pleasant one.

The dream itself happened, appropriately, on the night of the fourteenth. That is to say, Valentine's Day. It's taken me this long to gather my thoughts together on this terrifying dream, but here it is.

Oh listeners, listeners, the carnage that that holiday brought my fair town!

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I suppose I should begin by saying that, in these dreams, I lived in a little desert town called Night Vale. I'm not sure where this Night Vale is, only that it's in the middle of a very vast desert, and we seemed to be quite isolated from everyone else.

There, I'm also the nightly newscaster on our local radio station. What a fun coincidence, listeners!

The news started off as one might expect it to; reports of flight delays, health tips, City Council announcements. That sort of thing. But as I sat more or less safely in my booth, horrors went on outside.

Oh my dear listeners, if only I had the words to describe the terrible event that was Night Vale's Valentine's Day! Entire neighbourhoods leveled, Emergency workers rushing to help those injured and dying.

Vivisected teddy bears.

And woe, woe to those who were chosen to become someone's Valentine!

I of course urged the good people of my town to stay indoors, to save themselves from the tragedy of candy hearts and glitter. I do not know how many towns people we lost, but my heart goes out to them, and to the families they left behind.

Anyway! My Valentine's Day here was actually pretty nice. I went out for coffee with a friend of mine.

I hope you guys had a good holiday, too!

Weird weather we're having, isn't it?

It's funny how we use the heart to symbolize love. You'd think it would be another organ. But the heart is life and often a romance leaves you wishing yourself dead.

I do have a fondness for roses, though. Those never go amiss.

This might not be the place to post about it, but I'm just so. Excited.

My new boots came today!

I'm especially excited because they'll match my jeans? I mean, I think my regular purple boots match them okay, but these are just out of this world.

See what I mean?

I can't wait to wear them! I'm just sad you can't see them on the radio.

I can't believe we're already half way through January, listeners. Time really does fly, doesn't it!

If you believe in time as a structured concept, anyway.

Apparently, dear listeners, there's been some confusion lately in Orange County. People are acting very out of character, according to the posts I've been reading through. Sometimes they don't even look like who they claim to be at all!

I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm certain things will work themselves out eventually. They always seem to, around here.

Well listeners, this Christmas has finally made a believer out of me!

No, not Santa. Of course I believe in Santa. But, treasured listeners, it wasn't until earlier this week that I finally believed in snow.

Oh, I thought I might have seen it, during my childhood, but it was nothing but a distant memory. Maybe even a dream.

But now, confronted with physical evidence, who am I to deny its existence?

I'm debating, dear listeners.

I do like to decorate for Christmas, but now there's Hector to consider, and I'm not sure how well cats and decorations mix.

Would those who own cats please chime in with some helpful hints?

Update on the cat, listeners!

You remember, the cat that showed up on my stoop a while back?

No one ever responded to the fliers I put up, so... I guess he's mine now!

I've named him Hector. I think that's a good, solid name for a cat.

Did you know there are also earthquakes on the moon, and they're called moonquakes?

So! My costume is coming along really well? I mean, the eyes look really cool when I paint them on there.

The only problem is that I painted my skin black all around the eyes, to match my black wings, you know? But now I have black paint smudges all over everything.

I guess it's back to the drawing board. Only one week left!

Well listeners, I've gotten a few comments I don't really understand.

Apparently if I don't ogle or cat-call women, I'm not a real man? What kind of sense does that make? Can't I be respectful of women and their bodies and boundaries and still be considered a man? Not according to some people!

It really doesn't take that much to be a gentleman, folks. More people should try it!

Hello, dear listeners.

I think it's time for a somewhat serious public service announcement, due to a conversation I've had recently.

I really shouldn't have to remind anyone of this, it's 2013 after all. But still, some people seem to be of the mindset that a woman's body is there to be appreciated by all.

Which, in case we all forgot, it isn't.

Yes, some women -- and statistically, some men! -- will chose to wear something revealing for their Halloween costume. But this is not, I repeat not an excuse to harass anyone for what they are wearing! Cat calls and inappropriate comments are never called for, and especially on a night when everyone is looking to have a good, safe time.

So please, gentle listeners. Refrain from making lewd comments about anyone's appearance at any time, but especially as Halloween approaches and we see more people in costumes.

Who has fun plans for Halloween? I'm a big fan, myself. You won't be able to see my costume over the radio, of course, but I'll be certain to post pictures on the blog.

Here's something odd.

Well, I guess it isn't odd but it did surprise me a little.

I came home the other day to find a cat sitting in front of my door. Now, I live in an apartment building, so I thought maybe it was the cat of one of my neighbours down the hall. But after knocking on some doors and asking around, no one seems to have seen him before. No one is sure how he got in.

He's staying with me until I find his owner, I guess. I mean, I can't just leave him in the hallway.

I'm going to put up posters, but if you've seen this cat around and you know who he belongs to, let me know?

He's a very handsome cat, as you can see. I'm hesitant to name him, in case he belongs to someone.

I forgot how annoying living with cats can be. They keep moving things. I'm going to start taping the things on the mantel down so they don't get knocked off. Bloody beasts will learn to respect my knick knacks!

Hey, hey net, what's the word for when you're trying to make up a new color but you can't because the fish keep staring at you with their big eyes going blub blub blub blub?

I don't know it either. It's sad.

You know what we should do to cheer up? We should go to the park. We can have a big party in the park with a giant beach ball and those parachute things they used to have in gym class and ice cream and hotdogs and maybe hotdog ice cream. You should come. All of you. Someone should bring bubbles. I would, but I ran out.

Well, readers, it seems that once again, this strangeness has passed. Though we still must deal with the repercussions of our actions, or the actions of our plants, or those of our doubles (depending on what sort of situation you may have been in last week), all seems to be calm for the moment.

Let us take these experiences as a reminder that while there may be awful disruptions during the course of our lives, things move forward constantly. Nothing remains the same. And that, perhaps, is for the best.

More strange happenings in the OC, dear listeners!

As I reported on my show last night, I've been reading an awful lot of reports of strange animal behaviours, instances of telepathy, and many other things!

One thing I'll say about our city, it's never boring.

I don't think it's culture shock on my part for having moved to California, either.

Hello, listeners. Or I guess I should say, readers.

It was suggested to me by Intern Chad that I try out this forum as a new format for my reporting. "Why don't you start a blog?" he said. "You could reach a lot more people that way."

So here I am, readers. Your own Cecil Baldwin, from the nightly news. Isn't technology wonderful? I can talk to all of you like this, and you can ask me questions that I can answer in a timely manner, instead of waiting til the next news broadcast.

I could even find some breaking stories this way, you never know.

But for now, I'll simply say: hello.
