I swear sometimes the hardest part of my job is people thinking that google is better at my job than I am.

I completely understand that open heart surgery is terrifying but it's a pretty common procedure. Tumeric root is not going to help a leaky heart or three blocked arteries.

If I had a dollar for every time a patient tried to tell me what they read on-line, I'd be rich.

Seriously. I would be too.

Consults would take a lot less time if I didn't have to wade through all the self-diagnosis too. The internet is helpful in a lot of regards but not so much in this case.

I honestly don't know why some people think that the internet knows better than actual doctors.

I really want to hope that you're exaggerating about someone suggesting that. However...I know too many people to let myself believe you could be.

I wish I was exaggerating. Some people want to trust WebMD over medical degree.

Well because WebMD tells them what they want to hear.

Right? I know the internet makes things easier for a lot of people but in this instance, I think it makes our jobs harder.

I think it makes it a lot harder than it has to be most of the time.

It actually hasn't been that bad. Just frustrating at times having to deal with people who think WebMD has a better diagnosis.

I always encourage my patients to make well informed decisions both by listening to my advice, a second opinion should they want one or even reading the resources I direct them to.

But when you're on the brink of heart failure, that is not the time to insist on being treated with tumeric root.

No, but people will anyway. It's horrifying and fascinating.
