As far as "shakedown" cruises go, this was one for the record books. Some kind of strange cloud headed towards Earth, and the Enterprise went to intercept it.
Turns out it was the remains of one of the Voyager probes we'd sent out in the 20th century. Some alien race had discovered and reprogrammed it. Spock said they were living machines.
Thousands of starships couldn't generate the power this thing put out. We penetrated the cloud as it entered the Sol system with every intent of destroying all life on Earth.
Spock attempted a mind meld with it, and determined that its weapon was also a data gathering tool as well as learning its origins.
The probe was at the center of the ship, which had been built to help what the aliens assumed was the probe's purpose. To learn all that is learnable. In the process of learning, it became sentient, and it returned home to discover what the point of its existence was. Only it couldn't believe that primitive organic lifeforms could have created it.
We defeated it when the new Captain of the Enterprise merged with V'ger, evolving it into a new plane of existence. To add humanity's ability to feel and to believe to it's existence and it's logic.
His loss to Starfleet is incalculable, but I wonder if maybe he got the better end of the deal.
