While decluttering wasn’t exactly in Emma’s wheelhouse, it wasn’t completely out of it either, “You know, it’s not that bad.”
Okay, so, Emma was good at minimising, she didn’t live with a lot of things, because routinely she packed up anything that was important into a car and drove off onto her next adventure. She stopped buying lots of stuff around about the time she left Miami and her son behind. So she was good at keeping things on the low, figuring out what was important and what wasn’t.
“I mean, a little organisation and you’ll see what you need and what is just… clutter.” Helping Padme organise things wasn’t a bad way to spend her day off either, Emma rather liked when she wasn’t just killing time on her own. “Where do you want to start?”
Padme lived for organizing, she really did, but with her life having been so busy, it made it hard. Anakin took up more time than she’d expected, even if she was happy to be with him. And with Jane going back to school and that position still only randomly filled by Nesta…
“I need to finish off these weddings,” she said, pointing at file folders and a box of receipts. “I’ve written initials on all the invoices, and receipts, and I have to basically put together what I did with all the money I was given. Reconciliation is so boring. I mean, I give all this to my accountant, and they figure out everything but putting it together?” She sighed and stuck out her tongue a bit. “The worst. So if you want to do that, and I’ll start organizing my new files…”
She smiled.
“You’re the best, Emma. And I can pay you for this, by the way. It seems lame to spend time hanging out sorting my office. Even if you’re awesome and totally want to do this. Remind me that I’m paying for dinner and when you want to order in. I’m wearing comfy pants for a reason tonight,” she teased.
“I work for a medical research firm, I basically do this stuff all day anyway.” Not quite like this, but organising the files and managing information was part of her job, so it wasn’t like this was going to be torture. “Besides, I offered to help, so it’s fine. Just buy dinner and maybe some dessert and I’m a happy gal.”
It wasn’t really like Emma had a social life that was brimming with activities, so she wasn’t exactly turning down a hot date or exciting night out when she was doing this with Padme.
“It’ll be monotonous, but soothing, I’m sure.” Tasks like that usually were. “How many weddings are in here exactly?” That didn’t mean she wouldn’t tease a little.
“One a week for the whole summer roughly so I guess. ...twelve?” When Padme put it that way, it didn’t seem like a lot, but each wedding was so overwhelmingly detailed…
“You’d be surprised at how much paperwork goes into these stupid things.” Even as she was complaining though, she found how happy she was going through the mood boards, and starting to file her new clients and their information. “Don’t get me wrong -- I love weddings. I do. I feel lucky that I get to go to so many. Love is such an amazing thing to be celebrated and even if it doesn’t work out -- which happens often too -- for one day, things went perfectly. I hope even people who get divorced look back fondly on that day ..or at least on the food, since we both know that’s the most important part of a wedding.”
A semi joke, but still serious. People always remembered the food. Maybe not the decor, but the food? Absolutely.
“How is your job going? Been sent anywhere interesting lately?”
Emma smiled softly as she listened to Padme talk about weddings, while she pulled the files out to put things together and start shuffling them into set piles to start organising properly. Emma wasn’t exactly a romantic, not really. She guessed that sort of got knocked out of her young.
But the way Padme talked about it spoke to a romantic heart, and that in and of itself was uplifting. “I haven’t actually been to a wedding.” Not that she could remember at least. Her parents were married when they’d adopted her, all her parents' friends were married and no one had actually invited her to a wedding in her adult life -she hadn’t really been friends with people long enough to warrant an invite to a wedding. “I see them on TV and in movies, but I’ve never actually been to one.”
It wasn’t like Emma was that eager to attend either, but it was still interesting seeing all that went into planning one.
“It’s going well,” her job was engaging and interesting, so that was a good thing. She liked Godfrey and the business. “No new events, but I think they’re looking at more this upcoming festive season.”
Emma's words stopped Padmé and she held up a hand, her head shaking a little bit.
"Hold on -- you’ve never been to a wedding before? Not even as a plus one?” Padme found that so surprising and not just because of her job. “Even before doing what I do, I think I went to at least one or two a year, if not more. My parents tend to travel in high society and - surprise, I know - there’s multiple marriages for most people. It’s actually weird...now that I think about it, my parents are the only ones who have really stayed married for as long as they have without constantly cheating on each other.” A pause. “Or if they have, I never knew about it.’
“I’ll try to find one that will be amazing, and you can come with. I mean, they’re all amazing, but some have a couple that I know will actually stay together.” She raised an eyebrow with a smile. “I have a good knack for knowing who will break up within the year and who won’t.”
Emma gave a shrug and a shake of her head, figuring that it hadn’t really been that strange, maybe Padme just thought it weird because she’d been to so many weddings and events. But she wasn’t going to turn down the invitation either. “That sounds fun,” Padme certainly had made the experience at the fundraiser an enjoyable one anyway.
“But if I ever introduce you to someone I’m dating, please keep your super power to yourself.” Emma’s relationships were doomed enough without the knowledge that they were doomed.
All in all, the process of organising files for Padme was rather relaxing, and not a bad way to spend a free afternoon.
