WHO: Blossom & Elsa
WHERE: Random Park
WHEN: {backdated} Early September
WHAT: Blossom is introduced to Elsa and her awesome powers.
WARNINGS: PG
STATUS: Complete
So far, Blossom was walking dogs three times a week. It was nice, it got her out and she liked having the form of company in the little furry friends. But she was aware that getting out for more than just dog walking was important.
She’d stopped by a cafe to get a cool drink, a fruity mix with blitzed ice in it, dripping cool water over her hands as she wandered. She’d consciously left her iPod at home, because the point was to attempt to talk to someone, not give the aura of ‘don’t bother me’, which tended to be what people thought when folks wandered with air pods in.
It was sunny with a breeze, so a wander through a fairly open park seemed like just the right thing to do that afternoon, hopefully something she could find some interest in, so she didn’t get bored right away and just go home to read something.
Maybe she should’ve brought a book, in case she didn’t manage to strike up conversation somewhere. Oh, foiled plans.
---
It wasn’t too bad a day, but even a warm day wasn’t something that bothered Elsa. The cold never bothered her, but neither did the heat; she had figured out a way to coat her skin in a thin layer of ice.
It gave her a slight bit of sparkle as she wandered through the park, lost in thought.
Elsa spied some kids playing on a swingset, glanced around to see if anyone was looking, then tapped her foot on the ground. Ice shot out towards the swingset, then exploded in a flurry of snow around the children.
---
Blossom heard the screams, childlike but joyful, so nothing to worry about, just as she noticed the snow falling around the little play area. Snow? Blossom’s head tilted to the side, watched the little flurry falling down as kids ran around, chasing to toss snow on each other, catching little snowflakes in their hands.
Deciding to move closer, Blossom reached out to catch some of it falling on her finger tips, laughing a little. “Isn’t this just crazy?” She glanced at a blond lady nearby, still grinning, because Orange County was weird enough to have a tiny microclimate with snow, of course.
---
“No, this is perfectly normal,” Elsa said, a coy grin on her face. “It snowed in July last year, too.”
Perhaps not in a very localized area like this. “It’s almost like the weather has a mind of its own.”
A number of snowmen spun up from the snow and started dancing around the children, though Elsa was careful not to give them sentience or anything approaching actually being alive.
---
Perfectly normal seemed like a stretch, maybe if there was a ‘for Orange County’ tacked on there, that would be a passable statement, but Blossom was left frowning for the most part over it all. It was clearly a fun experience for the kids; some of them might’ve never actually seen snow except today depending on if they were local or from somewhere else.
“Well, weather doesn’t have a mind, obviously, but with the change in climate it is entirely possible that the weather can be unpredictable enough to cause sudden dips in pressure and increases in chill that can meet in a cross wind in order to---”
It took Blossom a second to just watch the snowmen the kids were playing with, while she stopped her mouth and let her brain engage, “I realise now you meant that figuratively and weren’t looking for a motormouth to go off at you. Sorry.”
---
Elsa found herself smiling as Blossom went into the science of it all, which was, actually something she appreciated. “I don’t mind. I almost went into weather when I was younger. Ended up an architect instead. Being a weatherwoman would have been ironic…”
She clasped her hands behind her back. “So this isn’t surprising to you?”
---
Blossom had flirted with the idea of weatherperson too, although it was a quick and fleeting thought, mostly when she’d started to learn the details of how rain was made and understanding tectonic plates and wind directionality and how it could be used to predict weather patterns. But being on the TV wasn’t something that Blossom would’ve really been comfortable with.
“I’ll bet the architecture world is glad you made the decision.” And it seemed more and more like a science understanding wasn’t needed to tell the weather anymore.
“Not really, I’ve lived here for a little while now,” long enough to see that things didn’t have an explanation in Orange County, “weird things happen around here and it’s okay.” Weirder than having dreams of another life, most of the time it was just super fascinating. “I guess around here we just go with things, right?”
---
“I like to think they’re grateful for me. I’ve landed some amazing contracts since leaving university, so I’ll consider those wins.” Elsa shifted a little on her feet, uncomfortable with talking about herself.
“I guess we do. If it’s not some giant dragon wrecking your house, it’s something else. And no, I’m never letting that go, ever.”
A regular earthquake would have been preferable.
---
“I’ll bet they are, creative talent is something they undoubtedly cherish.” Although Blossom didn’t know for sure that Elsa was greatly talented, but Blossom always assumed the best of people because it was better to start like that.
“Oh, yeah, that’s a bummer.” Blossom wasn’t sure how people dealt with these things on the regular. “My dad was shocked at the insurance prices so I have to hope to goodness that nothing bad happens.” Or not overly bad.
Hopefully no more dragons at least.
---
Not everyone appreciated creative talent, but Elsa hadn’t run into too many of those. She didn’t expect that luck to last forever, eventually she’d get a bad client, but hopefully not for awhile and she’d hopefully figure out a way to handle it.
“They’re a bit high,” Elsa agreed. “I don’t have a car but when I get one I’m afraid to even look at those. Cars get wrecked all the time out here.”
It wasn’t the most fun conversation to have, so Elsa switched subjects. “Just taking a walk?”
---
That made Blossom all the more sure she’d be finding another mode of transport than a car if she was going to be paying high premiums and possibly deal with it being destroyed a lot. Maybe a bike, that would be better.
“I’m trying to stay healthy,” it was probably something that happened all around California, “but I’m not so great at organised events.” She wasn’t sporty, she didn’t like gyms and things like that. “I’m glad I did now, so that I could see this.” She smiled at the snow stuff, because it was fascinating seeing these things.
---
“I wish I could do more. Last year I had a mini blizzard and I got more complaints than thanks.” Elsa wrinkled her nose. It still stung a little. There’d been a heat-wave and she’d just been trying to help. “Walking is a great way to stay healthy, as long as you try to stay cool while doing it. Would you like your own snow flurry?”
---
It took Blossom a little while to figure out, but then she realised that it was an indication that this what the blond woman was doing. Which… was cool. “Why would people complain about that? About something helping them stay cool?” And okay, blizzards might be a little but much for people, but why complain? “That seems rude of them.” Which it did, someone trying to help and they complained. Very rude.
She did need to remember to hydrate, but… “I… I would love one.” She was sure, if she was a cartoon, she’d have heart eyes at that exact moment, “You’d do that? Really?”
---
“It was rude,” Elsa agreed. Rude and unnecessary, but she decided to leave the past in the past. No matter how rankled the thought still made her.
She tilted her head, endeared by Blossom’s reaction to her offer, then winked at her. “I think a limited duration one, I’m sure after a few hours you’ll want the snow to stop.”
And if she did this right, it shouldn’t melt all over things either. The power of magic. With a flourish of her fingers, and a trick of the wrist, Elsa sent a flurry of sparkles in Blossom’s direction. A little cloud formed overhead, dropping snow that drifted to the ground but did not stick nor leave a wet mess behind.
---
Magic had to be the coolest thing, and even though Blossom was getting used to people talking about it and her dreams having super powers. So something like this, having a little flurry of snow for herself, that’d be so cool and really help her not overheat.
“That’s so neat!” Her hands were held out under her, the snow dropping onto her hands, so cool on her skin while the little cloud was so cute above her. And if she’d have this to wander with before it would just fade off, that was so sweet too.
She couldn’t get why people wouldn’t be so pleased with this. “This is the best thing ever, you’re so freakin’ cool.” Ice powers, how amazing was that!
---
“I am a little bit sub-zero,” Elsa joked, eyes flashing in delight at Blossom’s reaction. People liked this sort of thing, which was a lesson she should have learned from her dreams, but try telling that to the anxiety goblin she’d nicknamed Hans. Still, she had fully relaxed again, in the delight of Blossom’s delight.
So she blurted out, “I can make ice castles too!”
---
“Are you freaking kidding?” Blossom couldn’t contain that little outburst, because really? Ice castles!? How was that not a thing that was loved around here? “That sounds amazing? I mean, a castle? Made of ice. That’d be an amazing attraction.”
It seemed like maybe, just maybe, someone needed to tell this woman how absolutely amazing having those powers were. “I take it you’re a dreamer, right?” Because otherwise this would be weird. “Man, I wish I had ice powers.”
---
“You act like I’m some kind of Disney princess,” Elsa replied, lighting up just a little. “Or well, Queen in my case. A snow Queen, more or less, with magic I was born with. In my Dreams, yes.”
Though she didn’t know the origins of her powers and had always been curious. She tugged lightly at her braid. “I made a beautiful palace. I haven’t.. quite decided what I want to do here yet. I’ve been practicing various designs. Actually…!”
And here Elsa started to nerd out, “It’s been really great for my work, I can visualize a design and make a mini 3d version from Ice almost immediately, to look for any weak points or to just see what the building looks like!”
---
“I mean, it’d be a super cool story right? Awesome Princess with powers helps the whole nation have fun, becomes Queen and unites with northern kingdom by befriending a Princess turned Queen with like, maybe fire powers? Or air powers? That’d be so cool.” Not that stories like that were ever told. Every Princess needed to have a Prince, and that was just bleh!
“You know, if you could find a way to like, keep the designs cold always, you could really make some super cool designs and like, sell them? Or display them? That’d be a really cool art installation right? Miniature 3D models of beautiful ice sculpture buildings. Like the Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal, the coliseums?” Blossom was probably getting a little carried away with things though.
“Or even just for yourself, that’d be so neat too.” Collecting some snow in her hands, Blossom gave an awed sigh, “I just think it’s so rad.” Rad, ugh, she needed to speak normally.
---
“I wish it had been like that,” Elsa admitted, lowering her head as she remembered how alone she’d been in her dreams. “I was so afraid of hurting people that I locked myself away. And you know what happens when you’re repressed for years and then…. lose control.”
A mini blizzard suddenly raged at their feet, then started to form into the buildings Blossom mentioned.
“Though I really wouldn’t have minded a gorgeous fire princess.” Elsa smiled bashfully, “Much more my type than a prince.”
---
“Yeah,” Blossom sighed a little, she was sure that it would be scary, powers and origin stories sounded like they’d be cool on the outside, but having them was probably super scary. She didn’t really have that in her dreams, she and her sister sharing their powers and just always having them. Not to mention that things didn’t really get deep and dark in her dreams. “That sounds a little less fun.” A lot less fun.
The blizzard caught Blossom’s attention, crouching a little bit to look at the models, and she was right, they looked so very cool, it was almost a shame that they would melt. “Well, it’s not like you’d need one, a prince I mean.” Blossom got tired of the Disney stories where all the Princess’ problems went away when she found her Prince. Like having a man was the most important thing. Sure, it was nice, and Blossom wouldn’t mind a boyfriend whenever it happened, but it wasn’t like all her problems would go away with that.
“Fire and ice would be so great though, right? Like a nice balance.”
---
“I don’t recommend accidentally creating eternal winters,” Elsa said, managing to make a joke of it which was something she was sure her therapist would be proud of. “At least not without knowing the secret to bringing back summer.”
She looked at the buildings, the ice glistening in the sun, and appreciated the adorable redhead’s words. “I’d marry the princess if she’d have me, but you’re right, I don’t need one of those either!”
They were just kind of nice to have. “Maybe that was one reason things didn’t work out with my last girlfriend. Too much ice between us, too much alike.”
---
Blossom didn’t think that an eternal winter would be great; too much cold for too long was probably bad for most people. Probably not if you liked the cold and winter, but everyone got tired of the same thing day after day.
Giving a soft smile, Blossom shook her head a little, “I don’t think being too alike is a problem either, sometimes things just don’t work out, the time might not be right, or maybe you’re not really meant for each other. It doesn’t mean that you need someone different.” There was that saying, opposites attract, but that the same time likeness attracted likeness.
So either you were meant to date someone entirely different, or entirely the same. And even there, it wasn’t like there was a guarantee. “I’m sure the right person is out there, somewhere. And you’ll meet her when the time is right.”
---
It was nice to hear it, at least put that way. It didn’t alleviate her heart of the hurt, and she knew that her and Weiss were destined to never be more than friends, a bit like how it had worked out with Ozma. She just had to remind herself it wasn’t anything wrong with her, just luck.
Mostly she missed the intimacy. And the flirting. She understood a lot better why her sister was flirty, now.
Which was why it was really hard not to wink at Blossom. “I’m sure she’s out there, I’ll just have to have your optimism in mind.”
---
In a sense, Blossom’s youth worked in her favour. She’d never really had her heart broken, she’d had one boyfriend in high school and it wasn’t some big love affair, they went to a few dances together and went bowling one time and hung out with friends, but it wasn’t a whirlwind romance that made her think they’d be together forever.
“I think everyone will have someone, y’know? It’s just about finding the right person.”
She did hope that Elsa at least found someone, even a few someones, people to love and grow with. “I can loan you my optimism though, like if you need any, you can just like, call me and I’ll just flood optimism everywhere.”
---
Meanwhile, Elsa had messed up her relationship with her sister and her parents, and never got a chance to repair the latter. And while she was on good terms with her exes they were still...exes.
"Sometimes I think that one person might just end up being a friend and not a lover. And maybe that's okay. But I'll take a little of that optimism as long as you keep some for yourself!"
---
“Oh I have so much optimism.” That was something she was told on the regular, ‘you’re so optimistic’, ‘how can you be so optimistic’, ‘you’re brimming with optimism’. And it wasn’t a bad thing, how could being optimistic be a bad thing?
“But would it be so bad? A platonic soulmate? I think that’d still be nice, having that person you can always rely on, regardless of where you are or what you’re doing. And not have it be tied up into something romantic?” Blossom wasn’t sure that romance was everything, she just wanted connections with people.
---
“It wouldn’t be bad at all!” Elsa smiled, agreeing completely. She thought, maybe, Ozma was a bit like that in some ways, while other people might be in other ways. So maybe it was possible for different people to take on different aspects in her life.
Which was okay too. “Makes it less complicated, at least. But there’s a lot to like about the idea.”
---
“Whatever it is, I’m sure you’ll find something that makes you feel complete.” Even if it wasn’t a person, or just something or someone to share things with. “I have a sense for these things, I’m sure of it.”
She didn’t though, even if she hoped that it was true, but she just felt like someone as awesome as Elsa undoubtedly shouldn’t be lonely at all. In any capacity.
