Time alone with Kat at his house was hard to come by with his boyfriends new roommate. Michael liked Gwen pretty well, she seemed cool and was into music which always scored points with him, but it was hard on him always having to pretend like he didn’t want to be able to just touch and kiss the other man when they were at Kat’s place. In some ways it felt a little like back when he was on house arrest thanks to the Dreams - they could only be together at the beach house. But he wasn’t going to say anything. He’d known what he was in for when they’d started dating. Katou wasn’t out and he had to respect that his boyfriend didn’t want everyone to know about his sexuality. He didn’t have to like it though. It was one of the unspoken things in their relationship.
Katou was off doing something in another room and Michael had made an excuse to get into his bedroom where he knew the rock was at. The Badass Rock of Doom, or Bard as Michael was supposed to call it. He didn’t like it. He liked it less each time he had to be around it and he kept thinking about how Natasha had asked him to try and steal it. And so that’s what he was doing. He had his guitar case at the foot of the bed open so it would be easy enough to put it in there and then close it and take off before Gwen got home. He reached for the rock, trying to ignore the sick feeling it was giving him in the pit of his stomach.

Katou enjoyed having Michael over, even if it was hard sometimes to stop himself from touching him. It was nice though, being able to meet somewhere other than Michael’s house. He didn’t hate it as much now that they could actually get out once in a while, but sometimes it still made him feel a little claustrophobic.
Anyway, now he had the Badass Rock of Doom, so it was nice being able to stay at home for the night. Especially when Gwen wasn’t around. He tried to ignore the bad feeling in his stomach when Michael had made his way to Katou’s room, and thought he was doing a pretty good job of it, but there was something, a little voice whispering in the back of his head, that told him to go check on the two of them.
His blood ran cold when he saw Michael palming his rock, and then it turned into a cold anger. Who the hell did Michael think he was? He thought just because Katou was sleeping with him, he’d let him take his Badass rock of Doom? He grabbed Shiranui, the sword from his dreams, and silently padded up behind Michael. He wrapped his arm around Michael’s body, pressing his blade up against Michael’s throat.
“I know you’re not trying to steal my rock,” Katou said coldly from behind him.

Michael tensed when he felt that blade against his neck and that sick feeling in his stomach turned to ice at the way Katou spoke to him. “Of course not. I just wanted to get a better look at it that’s all.” Michael lied, turning slowly so that he could look at the other man’s face. “See if I could figure out what you meant by it being special.” He shrugged, trying to keep from reacting to that blade still pressed against his skin. Okay. He needed to talk to Tyler about what could kill him now that he was a vampire. He’d been on this path a lot longer so he had to know more right?

Katou met Michael's look coldly, the look in his eyes leaving no doubt that he would kill Michael if pressed, even if inside he wasn't entirely sure he could do it. It didn't matter if he believed he could do it, what mattered now was that Michael believed it. He didn't know if he could believe what Michael was saying. Anyone could see what it was that was special about his badass rock, and he was sure Michael had been trying to steal it for himself.
But he wanted to believe Michael. Katou had never had much luck trusting people; most of the people he'd tried to had left him, and really, Michael was all that was left.
Tentatively, he removed his hand from Michael's body, though not the sword from his throat, keeping a close eye for any sudden movements, and held out his hand, palm up. "Hand it over," he said.

Michael had never been so glad that oxygen wasn’t actually an issue for him anymore as he was right then with that blade still pressed into his throat. He knew that his boyfriend had a darkness - everybody did, including himself - but he’d never actually seen it as clearly as he did right now. He kept calm though as he reached out with the rock and placed it in Katou’s hand, releasing it and pulling his hand back with it open. “See? I told you I wasn’t up to anything. I just wanted to get a better look at it.” He gave a half shrug, trying to keep his voice casual.

Some of the tension left Katou’s shoulders when BARD was back in his hand, and after another second, he lowered the blade. “You could have just asked,” Katou said, his gaze falling to the rock in his hand to make sure that it really was there. There was no mistaking it. There was no way anyone could have replicated it; it shone with it’s own inner light, as if Katou held an entire universe there in his hands with thousands of glittering stars and rainbows.

Michael frowned a little when he saw the way Katou looked at the rock. Okay he definitely needed to talk to his boss. Tell her what had happened when he’d tried to take it. And how he just….looked at the thing. Like he loved it or something. “You were busy. I didn’t think you’d mind since you’d said I needed to see it. Sorry.” Michael said, taking a small step back as that blade lowered from his throat.

Katou rested Shiranui against the wall, and flopped down on his bed. Michael had said that he wasn’t trying to steal the rock, but Katou wasn’t sure if he could trust him. He trusted Michael more than he trusted anyone else, but trust was already a tenuous thing with Katou. And with a precious stone like this…
Well, people changed when they wanted something, and even if Michael had said he wasn’t trying to steal it, who wouldn’t want to steal it? In fact, the more Katou thought about it, the more sure he was. Michael had become enthralled with the thing, and coveted it, and wanted it for himself, Katou be damned. This despite the fact that Katou had fought a fucking fire monster for it in a goddamn volcano and clearly was the only one who deserved it.
He should have been angry at the betrayal, but instead he just felt… well, kind of defeated. “I think you should go,” he said, hollowly.
****
Michael swallowed when he heard Katou say those words and he nodded. “Yeah. Probably a good idea. Your roommate is probably going to be home soon and it might be hard to explain my being here. Just let me find my shirt and I’ll be out of your way.” He said, realizing what he’d said a second too late and wincing.

Katou frowned. He knew that Michael wasn’t exactly excited about the fact that their relationship was still underwraps, but while he liked Gwen just fine he didn’t trust her to know about their relationship. Anyway, it didn’t matter right now. Michael had no right to be upset when he was the one who’d tried to rob Katou.
“It’s probably in the living room,” he said, making no move to get up from his bed.
***
Michael just nodded his head at that suggestion, kneeling down to make sure he had his guitar firmly fixed in the case before closing it and heading towards the bedroom door. He stopped and looked at Katou laying on the bed. “Later babe.” He said, knowing he could, probably should actually, go over there and try to give him a better goodbye but he wasn’t going to.
He found his shirt laying on the floor where one of them had dropped it on the way to the bedroom when he’d first gotten there and pulled it on, looking around one more time to make sure he had everything before heading out to his car.
