WHO: Max, Michael, and Isobel
WHAT: Family dinner
WHEN: Easter
WHERE: At the Evans family home
STATUS: In progress
RATING: Low
Max took a deep breath as he and Michael moved up the path to the front door. They were right on time, actually a few minutes early which was good because his mother could be one demanding lady and showing up late, especially on a holiday, was never a good idea. It would be one more thing for her to hold over her son’s head, along with the fact that he had chosen a low-paying government sector job while Isobel, the golden child, had gone into the private sector and was earning money faster than she could spend it. Impressive, especially considering how much his sister liked to shop, and the types of stores she frequented.
Needing a buffer from both of the women in his life, Max had invited Michael. It served two purposes, actually: the aforementioned buffer as well as annoying his mother. She’d never really understood why both of her children liked the orphan boy quite so much. Turning to his friend even as he rang the doorbell, Max gave a nod of gratitude.
“Thanks for coming, by the way. You have no idea how much I appreciate this.” Going to a family dinner wtih just his mother and sister would have been a level of torture akin to having bamboo shoots forced under his fingernails.
