Laurel didn’t have time to cook often, but tonight being a family dinner night, she actually left work early to make homemade lasagna for her family. She had dinner in the oven, was buttering the bread, while listening to Olivia sing her ABC’s when she heard footsteps, “Sara?” she called out as she leaned to see who was in the hallway and smiled to see her younger sister. “Perfect timing, dinner about to come out of the over and I’ll be putting the bread in next.“
She kept talking over her singing daughter as she went to the oven to open the door, “do you want salad tonight?” she asked Sara, “I can toss one real quick if so.” The lasagna came out of the oven and the bread went in, Laurel wiped her forehead with the back of her hand and motion for her daughter to come over to her so they could wash their hands in the sink together.
Sara had just finished up her shift at the Emerald City cafe, and was looking forward to going home. She’d cooked for herself often enough when she’d been travelling, but it was still nice to come home to a house smelling of a fresh supper. The hostels she stayed at would sometimes have huge community dinners, where everyone pitched in a little and it became a bit of a feast, but that sort of thing was normally reserved for the holidays and it definitely wasn’t an everyday occurance.
“Hey kiddo,” she said, giving her niece a gentle kiss on the top of her head as Sara made her way into the kitchen.
“I can make the salads,” she assured Laurel, already making her way to the fridge to do just that. It was the least she could do after Laurel had spent so much time on the rest of the meal. Lasagna wasn’t exactly a quick and easy meal. “Why don’t you have a seat and I’ll finish up? You probably need it.”
Laurel flashed Sara a grateful smile, “I’ll set that table while you finish,” she offered “bread just needs two minutes,” she put Olivia down and than reached in a drawer, handing her two forks and spoon, “put these on the table and get in your chair,” Olivia nodded her head took the utensils and went to the table., “I’m sitting my ant Saraa,” she declared and Laurel just nodded her head yea, it was a round table.
She smiled at her sister as she grabbed the plates and glasses “how was work?” she asked.
“Oh good,” Sara said, giving Laurel a vaguely fake smile. “I’m doing really good things. Feels … really rewarding,” she said, scrambling for some sort of feeling. Truthfully, she kind of hated it. It wasn’t that she disliked the people she worked with, but she’d spent the last five years doing things that weren’t just giving the masses their coffees and their muffins. At least at The Double Tap the customers tended to have personality and stories to tell. At The Emerald City Cafe, it was just people day in, day out, getting their coffees and yelling about no-sugar soy foam lattes. It was taking more getting-used-to than Sara had expected.
She made her way to the fridge, and started to prepare the salads for them both. “How was your day?”
Laurel eyed her sister for a moment, she knew the good wasn’t truly good, but she didn’t think now was the time to even get into that. She wanted a good family dinner and not to push her sister away. “It was fine,” she answered about work, “kinda still settling in, my new partner seems alright.” She shrug her shoulder as she moved to get glasses, “what would you like to drink?” she asked as she got milk for Olivia.
“Just a beer is fine,” Sara said. She was pretty sure there was nothing more satisfying than a cold beer after a long day at work. “Yeah, Leon seems alright,” Sara said. It turned out that he was a regular fixture at the Double Tap, and Sara was getting to know him pretty well. “Oh, did I tell you? My boss’s girlfriend tried to set me up with him. I thought that seemed like a recipe for disaster.” For one, Sara generally didn’t do actual relationships.
Laurel turned to look at her sister, arched brow, “Now that….I can’t picture,” she remarked as she turned to grab a beer for her sister. “I don’t know him all that well, yet.” She sat the beer and glass of milk, and went to pour her a glass of wine, “but I will win him over, maybe make him some treats or something?” she poured her wine and than took a sip.
“Thanks,” Sara said, cracking open the top and taking a bit of a sip. “I don’t know who could say no to treats,” Sara said. “I mean, a bottle of whiskey will probably do it too, but I guess that’s not exactly work appropriate.” She turned to Olivia. “And how was your day, Squirt?”
She nodded her head, “Always Christmas,” Laurel noted as she turned to sit down, smiling at her sister as Olivia looked at her aunt. “Okay, day was okay,” she leaned back in her booster seat and looked at her mother as Laurel started to put some salad on Olivia’s plate. “We are working on the alphabet,” Laurel told Sara as she offered the bowl of salad to her.
“Oh really?” Sara asked. “You know, I could probably use some help with my alphabet if you wanted to help teach me after dinner,” she said, smiling. She really did love kids, even if she didn’t particularly want one of her own at this point in time. She was glad that she was able to spend so much time with Olivia these days.
Olivia fork stop in midst of stabbing lettuces and nodded her head, “Tell me story too?” she asked her with her bright blue eyes looking at her aunt, hoping the answer would be yes. Laurel smiled, started to work on eating her salad as well, “ I could work on some paperwork while you two do that,” she offered with a wink to Sara. She loved that they got along so well and encouraged their time together, so an excuse for her not to join them every now and then did happen.
“Of course,” Sara said cheerily. She really did love spending time with Olivia. Besides, she was pretty sure that’s what sisters were for - hanging out with the kid when she was in a good mood so mom could do important work stuff, and then handing her back when she started getting cranky.
“YAY!” Olivia declared with her mouth full, Laure cleared her throat, giving Olivia a look and the little one promptly shut her mouth and chewed on her food. “Maybe afterward we can have hot fudge sundaes,” Laurel offered before taking a bite of her own food. She only had a few bites before Olivia pushed her plated, “done,” she told her mother, which made Laurel put down her own fork so she could serve Olivia some of the lasagna.
“I don’t know where that maybe came from,” Sara said, grinning, and then taking her own bite of lasagna. It was pretty good. Motherhood really had improved Laurel’s cooking skills. Not that they had been bad before, despite how Sara might have teased her. “Because if you thought there was any way I’d say no to that, you don’t know me at all.”
Laurel found herself truly laughing as she shook her head as she put Olivia food in front of her, “okay, okay, we will have them.” She really loved how they have came back together as a family, she felt bad for Sara missing so many years of their lives, but it’s like they never really been apart. “Be careful,” she warned her daughter, “still a little hot,” she used the spoon to cut it apart for the steam will release and cool down the food some.
Sara leaned back in her chair, smiling as she watched Laurel help Olivia eat. She hadn’t realized just how much she’d missed family in her years away, but now that she had it back… well, she never planned on giving it up again. Her home, for now and always, would be with them.
