Tyler wasn’t sure why he had never turned off his humanity beforehand. It was obviously better than living his life the way he always had, trying to please everyone like Caroline and Klaus and getting nothing out of it in return. Now, he wasn’t beholden to anyone. He could do what he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Right now, what he wanted was Alice. She was one of the few people who had invited him into her home after he’d transitioned into a hybrid, which, of course, made her an easy target. No one was home when he let himself in, breaking down the back door. He’d taken a tour of the house, and it didn’t seem as though her child had been around for the last few days, but he didn’t care one way or another for that.
All that was left was to wait for Alice to come home. He’d helped himself to her liquor cabinet, and was now sitting in a chair in the living room, drinking a bottle of wine, watching sports on the television, and waiting for Alice to come home.
***
Alice had asked her dad to take Kurt out of the area for a few days when the messages from Tyler had really started to get to her. Not messages so much as threats and she didn’t want her son around if it really was something to worry about. And if it wasn’t - well then she had overreacted and given her dad and Kurt a little vacation from the insanity. And from seeing her stressing over whether or not she’d get the part she was in talks for. She’d be glad when she heard one way or another and could just be done with this waiting.
The only bad part about the boys being out of town was coming home to the empty house when she got back before Mina judging by the lack of her best friend’s car in the driveway. She kept her keys out as she walked up to the front door, phone in hand as she scrolled through the messages and pictures her father had sent that evening about what he and Kurt were up to, a sad smile on her face. She missed her little boy.
She was so focused on her phone that she didn’t realize when she walked through the front door that there was noise coming from the living room. “Mina? Did you have car trouble or something? You should have called me. We could have ridden home together, grabbed dinner out instead of ordering in.”
***
Tyler heard Alice coming even before she’d put her key in the door and called out. Hearing who she called to just made Tyler grin wider. He waited until he heard her close the door behind her, and then, in the blink of an eye, he was up from his seat on the couch and leaning against the doorframe of the living room, arms crossed across his chest and a hungry smirk on his face.
“Sorry Alice, you got that one wrong.”
***
Alice jumped a little when she heard Tyler’s voice coming from the doorway to their living room and she looked up at him, trying to force her breathing to level back out. “How’d you get in here Tyler?” She asked, taking a half step backwards from him, fingers automatically moving to call for help without looking away from him. She wasn’t going to ask what he wanted - the look on his face told her that it wasn’t anything good.
***
“Oh, the back door was open,” Tyler said, gesturing toward the back of the house. “Or at least, it was once I dealt with it. Tyler didn’t care if she was inching away from him. There was no way she could outrun him, and sometimes the chase could be fun. But he did keep an eye on her hand. “Oh Alice, you don’t really want to get anyone else mixed up in this too, do you?” he asked, and then grinned, his fangs extending and his eyes turning to a wolvish yellow. “We wouldn’t want to get anyone else hurt, would we?”
***
Alice let out a small gasp when she saw the fangs and dropped her phone, hearing a crack as it hit the floor. “Tyler just leave and I won’t tell anyone about you breaking in.” She said her voice wavering a little bit as she walked backward until she hit the wall and let out a little cry of surprise.
***
Tyler’s grin only widened, and he stepped slowly toward Alice, like a wolf stalking its cornered prey, her phone cracking more underneath his feet. “Now Alice,” he asked. “Where would be the fun in that?”
And then, too fast to see, he was on her, grabbing her, moving to sink his teeth into her neck.
***
Alice let out a loud scream as Tyler grabbed her and she felt his fangs sink into her neck, fists hitting against his chest even though she knew it was probably pointless. She was glad that she’d decided to go ahead and have her Dad take Kurt out of town even if it did mean she was home alone with no one to protect her now. They were safe at least. And so was Mina since she was out. And at least her Dad wouldn’t be the one to find her. That had to be a small blessing in this.
She felt tears spill out as Tyler drank from her.
***
Minako hadn’t really meant to stay out as late as she did. She should have texted Alice to let her know she was going to be out a little bit longer, as she got dragged into a volley ball game and she couldn’t pass it up. But it dragged on longer than it meant to. She pulled into the driveway as she heard a loud scream inside the house. Alice…
She grabbed the pen from her dreams and felt a warm gold light surround her as she whispered “Moon Power, Transform” under her breath and came running into the house.
***
The nice thing about being able to feed within the relative safety of someone’s house was that even if they screamed, it was unlikely that anyone else would hear them. Maybe it was the idea of that extra security, or the joy in eating, that stopped Tyler from hearing the whispered incantation, or from even noticing anyone else was around until they ran in through the front door.
Tyler lifted his head from Alice, blood dripping down his chin, and smiled. “Well, who is this?” he asked, letting go of Alice so she could drop to the floor. “It’s a little chilly for such a short skirt, isn’t it?”
***
Alice hit the floor, a little whimper escaping her as she tried to curl up, hand coming up to her neck to put over where he’d bit. “Get out of here. I don’t...I don’t want you getting hurt too.” She said, fear racing through her as she looked at her best friend.
***
“Codename Sailor V! Champion of Justice! The pretty guardian in a sailor suit, Sailor Venus has arrived!” The words left Minako’s mouth before she really could think to stop it. The thirteen year old in her dreams really had to make the real her introduce herself this way now? She shook it out of her head as she hardened her expression. “And you need to get the hell away from my friend.”
Minako ran charging towards him into a flying leap, aiming a kick at his chest. Such a short skirt? Better to kick your ass in, my dear. “Sailor V Kick!”
***
What was this? This ridiculous girl came out of nowhere, dressed in the most impractical get-up he’d seen in a long time, and started.. What was that? A superhero speech at him?
He couldn’t help but laugh, which was maybe why he was a little slow to react to her kick. Even still, with his vampire speed, he was able to bring up his arm - fast enough that the human eye could hardly track it - to block his chest. Even still, the blow of it on his forearms was enough to make him stumble back and away from Alice. The kick had stung, though with his vampire healing the pain was already fading.
He growled, his eyes flashing yellow again, annoyed enough that he decided he’d just snap that pretty little neck of hers instead of dragging it out. He lunged toward her, his hand reaching for her neck.
***
The kick didn’t quite land the way that Minako had intended for it to, but getting him to stumble back was at least… something? Not that it lasted long enough for her to attack again before he recovered. She jumped out of the way as he lunged at her, throwing an end table in his direction as she reached for the moon shaped compact she had tucked away. “CRESCENT BEAM!”
***
Tyler wasn’t sure what he was looking at when the beam of yellow flew from Sailor Venus’s hand, and realized he should have dodged when it struck him in the chest. He hissed in pain, the beam burning a hole through his shirt, and, with a strength of will, managed to move out of the beams path. Already, the torn skin under where his shirt had been was starting to heal.
“Oh, you’re going to regret that,” Tyler said, moving toward her.
***
“Am I?” Minako asked, narrowing her eyes in determination. Maybe that didn’t stop him, but she knew that neither she nor Alice were going to die. She’d make certain of that. And the magic… seemed to have an effect. Not as much as it did on the monsters in her dreams, but it hurt him more than anything physical had done.
“Looks like that burned a little to me. Maybe you should cool off?” She tossed her open compact up into the air as she cried out. “VENUS POWER! LOVE CRESCENT SHOWER!” She only hoped it was enough, it being the only other magical attack she had learned from her dreams.
***
“Yeah, you are,” Tyler said. And yet, before he could get close to her, she was performing another spell, and suddenly the golden light was raining down on him from above. He hissed again, shooting a look first at Alice, lying on the ground, and then at Sailor Venus.
This wasn’t worth it, he decided. Not even close to being worth it. And so, without another word, he ran out the door and into the night.
***
Minako stood poised to continue the fight until he out the door, sure he wasn’t coming back. “Yeah, that’s what I THOUGHT!” she yelled out after him before scrambling over to where Alice was. “Oh gods, Alice? Look up at me?” she asked as she kneeled on to the floor next to her best friend. “Stay with me, I’m going to get you help.”
***
Alice let out a weak whimper as she tried to look up at her friend, not sure if the blood was still flowing from the wound and too scared to move her fingers away to find out. “Don’t tell Daddy.” She whispered to her just before passing out.
