Who: Vanessa and Yang What: Hanging out (Innocent Netflix and Chill) When: A month or two ago? Where: Vanessa's house Rating/Warnings: There are some slightly inappropriate jokes in here so bewarned! Status: Complete when posted
Vanessa had sent Yang a text, asking her if she wanted to come by the house and hang out one night when they didn’t have classes the next day. They could watch a movie or something and just take some time off from studying and the stress that, for Vanessa at least, always seemed to come with holidays. She’d ordered some Thai food for delivery for them and brought up a couple bottles of wine from the basement just in case either of them wanted any to drink. Or in case she decided she wanted a drink in the next couple weeks. Even after living here almost a year she still hadn’t made much of a dent in the wine cellar and still kept getting shipments each month of new ones to try.
She heard the doorbell rang and tugged her tank down over the top of her jeans as she went to get the door, blonde curls pulled back in a braid so that they were at least mostly contained. “Hey. Dinner’s not here yet - I totally meant to ask if you minded Thai before I ordered. But I ordered a lot of different things for us and if you want something else we can do that too.” She said waving her friend in.
***
Yang had plenty of other stressers, so she was more than happy to spend time with her friend. At least, she was managing to make friends outside of her dream group, which was a thing that Yang knew was important.
Her hair was loose as usual, hanging down in waves all the way to her butt, and she wore low rider jeans with a low-cut t-shirt. “I like surprises. Thai is good.”
****
Vanessa felt slightly underdressed when she saw what Yang had worn, wishing she’d decided on the new sweater she’d bought with it’s v-neck. It showed off what little bosom she had to the best advantage. “Okay good. Because ordering from a second place would make food late. Netflix is already pulled up so I figured we could just watch a movie and chill. Sound good?” She said, leading her into the house.
***
“Netflix and chill huh? Good thing I’ve had mints tonight.” Yang flashed her a smile, the door closing behind her. She toed off her shoes, hung up her jacket and then followed Vanessa Into the living room. Maybe an inappropriate joke but it had been the first to come to mind and she had panicked.
***
Vanessa flushed as she realized what she’d said but she didn’t say anything at first, just mentally decided that she’d probably have at least one glass of wine to help stay relaxed. “There might be some in that end table if you find yourself needing more after dinner.” She told her with a smile as she made herself comfortable on the couch. “Do you want anything to drink before the movie debate starts? I have wine, water, juice, soda, beer. I think I might have some tea bags in a pantry. ….I really should have double checked more what I had before sitting down huh?”
***
“I could really use a beer,” Yang said. It was exhausting sometime. Trying to act normal. But she’d learned that acting normal made one feel normal. “I’ll get it. Want me to get you something since I’m already up?”
***
“I was thinking a glass of wine might be good. I think there’s a bottle that I’ve already opened in the fridge. If you really don’t mind grabbing drinks for both of us while you’re up?” Vanessa said, trying to sound normal. Not like the memory of their mistletoe kiss from the year before had just popped back into her mind out of nowhere.
*** Yang gave her a thumbs up as she got up and made her way to the alcohol. She really needed the buzz right now. And some other things but she’d take the buzz.
She got a beer, and a bottle, and a glass, bringing all of them back to the couch. Yang plopped down hard enough to probably make Vanessa bounce.
***
Vanessa couldn’t help the little squeal of laughter that escaped her as Yang landed on the couch beside her. Or the way it made her shift slightly closer to the other girl. “Thanks. When we’re ready for snacks I’ll go get them since you brought the drinks. Any clue what you want to watch? I promise I won’t judge no matter what genre it is.”
***
Snatching the remote, Yang paged through the movies, pausing briefly on Beauty and the Beast as a pained expression crossed her face. But she continued on, settling on Hot Fuzz. “This’ll do!”
***
Vanessa noticed the look on Yang’s face at Beauty and the Beast and she poured herself a glass before speaking. “Okay. See that first movie would possibly have made me break my promise not to judge if you’d picked that. The original animated one will always be the winner in my heart and I don’t think it needed to be remade.” She said, settling against the back of the couch without moving away from Yang. “Would you believe I’ve never seen this?”
***
“Yeah,” was all Yang said, that one word loaded with more emotion than she really wanted to deal with or explain. Though she did like the additional line about who the real beast was during the mob song.
“This is pretty good, won’t spoil it but it’ll surprise you. The whole ‘trilogy’ is great. And the two main male characters have an arc that’s usually reserved for the romantic relationship. Complete with orchestral theme.”
***
Vanessa leaned her head lightly against Yang’s shoulder at that one word answer in an offer of just understanding what all was there without pushing. Sometimes talking helped but she also knew from her own experience that sometimes talking just made it worse. It made the pain feel fresher.
“A trilogy huh? So what’s part two called if I want to watch it after this one?”
***
“This is part 2!” Yang grinned at her, shadows fading from her face. “They’re only linked by ice cream. There’s Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. This one is my favorite but they can be watched in any order.”
***
Vanessa grinned back, settling more comfortably against her friends side. “That’s what we’re missing...after lunch gets here. There’s some in the freezer I think. Or I could go get some. ...I think I can carry things when I’m invisible. I’ve been practicing upstairs.” She was a lot more comfortable talking with people about her abilities here than she was in the Dreams. But then she’d had more help getting used to them and controlling them here than there. And wasn’t having to deal with being stalked as she walked home.
***
“Does the ice cream just float here?” Yang asked, leaning in a little. “Or does it also turn invisible? Cuz if not that’s a rocky road.”
***
Vanessa laughed at the pun, shaking her head before taking a sip of her wine. “Want to find out? I know that in the dreams I can make things go invisible with me but I haven’t tested it out here. Mainly because I haven’t had anybody around to watch and verify when I try it.” She was right on that line between serious and teasing as she made the offer.
***
“I’m willing to try anything once,” Yang said, eyes flashing with mischief. This was nice, and less awkward. She could deal with this.
***
“So Yang...after we finish the movie...want to go flying with me? Give it a shot with if I can take someone with me here? Or should I try ice cream first?”
***
“You had me at flying,” Yang assured her. “The more dangerous something is, the better!”
***
“We might need to go upstairs to the bedroom - that way if I drop you you’ll have a soft space to land.” Vanessa blushed as she realized how that sounded. “There’s also padding in my work out room if you’d be more comfortable in there.”
***
“I’m real tough,” Yang assured her, flexing one of her considerable biceps. “And my powers mean you’d have to take me really high up before it’ll hurt. But you’re softer and squishier.”
She tried not to think about what else could happen in a bedroom. ***
“The work out room should be okay then. I’ve fallen up there enough that I know it’ll cushion most of it for me. Won’t even give me too much of a bruise if I lose complete control and we both crash.”
***
“I make a good cushion,” Yang assured her, blurting a joke about her breast size without thinking about it. “So lets try!”
***
Vanessa blushed brightly but before she had to answer the doorbell rang. “That’s probably dinner. I’ll go get it and after we eat and finish the movie we can go practice. Sound good?” She said, setting her glass down as she stood up to go answer the door.
***
“Sounds good!” Yang picked up her glass again and drank about half of it on one gulp. She felt like she needed that all of a sudden.
***
“Be right back with our food.” Vanessa grabbed her wallet from the table as she walked past it heading to the door and pausing before opening the door to pay the guy long enough for her hand to fully rematerialize. She gave him a nice tip and shut the door in his face shutting off his clumsy attempt at flirting as she walked back to where she’d left her friend and set the bag down.
***
“I think I’m starving,” Yang decided, reaching for the bag almost as soon as it was set down. Tonight was good. Just the sort of thing she’d needed
