Caroline loved falling asleep in Tyler’s arms. Even if he did get up way too early sometimes. It was still worth it. The dreams weren’t as scary when he was next to her. She felt safe.
Well, most dreams weren’t as scary. On this particular night Caroline was having one of the worst dreams ever. Her friends wanted to kill Klaus, which really that was fine with Caroline. But there was a problem, if an original vampire died, the whole sire line died with them. While there was a chance that meant her, Stefan, and Damon, it most definitely meant Tyler. Tyler was directly sired to Klaus. If Klaus died, so did Tyler.
Instead of killing Klaus the best solution was to just dagger him, and leave him that way. Which was precisely what they did. Until Alaric had to go and kill Klaus. Caroline watched Tyler in pain, knowing he was about to die. But he wouldn’t let her stay. He began to force himself to turn into a wolf so she would leave. She had no choice but to run, leaving Tyler alone to die.
Caroline woke up sobbing. “Tyler!” she called out even though he was right next to her, she was still not quite aware of her surroundings. “Tyler!”
Tyler was awake in a flash, and with vampire speed, he was leaning over here. “I’m here,” he said, brushing her hair behind her ear. It didn’t take a genius to realize that she’d just had some sort of horrible dream. “I’m here,” he repeated. “You’re safe.”
The fact that Tyler was there and talking to her, touching her, it was somewhat reassuring. He wasn’t actually dead. It was just the stupid dreams. “It’s not me I’m worried about!” Caroline replied using almost the exact same words she had said to him in the dream. Tyler had reassured her that she would be okay, she wouldn’t die because Klaus did. But she hadn’t been worried about her own death. It was Tyler’s. Because with Klaus gone, he would definitely follow. Caroline didn’t think she could live without Tyler. In the dreams or here. No matter how strong he thought she was.
Tyler’s brows furrowed together, and he stroked her hair, hoping to bring her some more comfort. “I’m okay too,” he assured her gently, assuming that it must have been him that she was worried about, given how she’d woken up. “What happened?”
“You…” Caroline said through tears. “You died.” She finally managed to get the words out. But that was all she could get out. The memory of leaving him alone to die still fresh in her mind. Of him forcing her to leave.
Tyler’s eyebrows furrowed together. He had died in the dreams, but not until much later in them. “I didn’t know you were so far,” he said without thinking, confused.
Of course she was that far. Not that much time had passed since the last dream she told Tyler about. At least she didn’t think it had. “You wouldn’t let me stay!” she went on still caught up in her dream. “Why would you do that? Why would you force me away? I wanted to be there for you!”
Now Tyler really was confused. He hadn’t forced Caroline away in his dreams at all. They’d been long broken up, she’d moved on the Stefan or Alaric or someone, and Tyler had left to go work for the Armory. Things had never really been the same between them after she’d slept with Klaus.
And then, thinking his name, he realized exactly where Caroline was. “It’s okay,” he said, brushing her hair behind her ear again. “I’m not dead. It’s… complicated, but I promise I’m not dead.”
“You’re not?” Caroline asked her eyes wide, still watery with tears but wide. “Good,” Caroline said wrapping her arms around him and burying her head in his chest for a moment. “I was going to run away with you. But then Klaus…” ugh that asshole always ruined everything. Even dead. Including her boyfriend’s life. “I can’t lose you.”
Tyler kissed the top of her head and stroked her hair, not really sure what to say. He was going to die some day in the dreams, but Caroline wouldn’t really lose him. Hell, it barely seemed like she had been upset when Damon had killed him, even going so far as the forgive the vampire for doing it when she had always hated Damon before that.
“I’m not,” he assured her, because at least he could do that. “Though I’m pretty sure Klaus is in my body or something.”
“Like he did to Alaric?” Caroline remembered when he had taken over Alaric’s body. Before she knew much about him. Back when he was just the scary original trying to kill Elena.
“Ugh, whatever,” Caroline said wrinkling her nose. “I don’t want to think about him right now.” She just wanted to lie in bed with her boyfriend. Although she knew she wouldn’t be going back to sleep anytime soon, she still felt safe in his arms.
“Something like that,” Tyler said, though he hadn’t known much about whatever the hell had been going on with Alaric. He’d heard about it more or less second hand.
He laid back in bed, pulling Caroline tight against him and planting a kiss on her lips. “Yeah? Want me to give you something else to think about instead?” he asked suggestively.
“Mmm,” Caroline replied kissing him back hungrily. “This is why I love you.”
