Who: Simon Lewis & Jace Herondale
When: Backdated: Beginning of September
Where: Baxter's Bakery
What: Running into each other
Rating/Warnings: Family Friendly
Status: Complete
Simon and the band had a gig coming up so he’d been spending most of his time with them practicing over the last couple of days. As it turned out their practice space wasn’t too far from the Baxter’s location where Izzy worked so midway through practice on this particular day, Eric had mentioned wanting a Sparkling latte, which caused Matt and Kirk to express that they also wanted something from Baxter’s so they had decided to take a break and head over.
While Simon didn’t eat, which they knew all about, he accompanied the guys for no other reason than to get a chance to see Izzy before he saw her again that night at home.
***
Jace had finished up his private training session early that day and had some time to kill before his class so he’d decided that it was a good opportunity to stop in and visit with Izzy at her job. And yes take advantage of her employee discount to get himself something to snack on. That was the fun of having a cousin in the food industry right? They could hook you up.
He looked around but didn’t see her at first. But he did see her boyfriend Simon and he made his way over there. “Simon. Is Izzy not working today?” He asked.
***
Upon entering Baxter’s, while the other guys got in line, Simon glanced around for Izzy, but didn’t see her at the front, which meant that she must have been in the back, because he knew for a fact that she had left for work that morning.
He was contemplating heading into the back to check when someone came up beside him, causing him to jump slightly when they spoke, “Jace. You scared the crap out of me.” Only a vampire like Simon would be easy to sneak up on, “Yeah….no, she should be here.”
***
Jace hoped that the smile he gave the other guy was more friendly than amused. Although he was pretty amused by how easy Simon had been scared by him. Not that he'd admit that to Simon or Izzy. Not right then anyway. “I wasn't trying to. You know how she works better than I do...any chance she just ran an errand?”
***
Had Jace known that Simon was a vampire, he likely would have found it even more amusing that he’d been able to sneak up on Simon, but Jace didn’t know any of that just yet. “Yeah, that’s possible. I know for a fact that she was leaving for work this morning, so she’s either running an errand or in the back.” He could always text her, but if she was out of the bakery at the moment, chances were she wouldn’t be back before he left.
***
“Damn. I was hoping to see her. Maybe get a pastry or something before I had to get back for my next class.” Jace told him. “So what are you doing here?”
***
Simon quirked a brow at Jace, “And you can’t get a pastry without her here? Were you planning on trying to get it for free?” It was totally plausible that Izzy would give Jace a family discount, which meant a free pastry, but Simon couldn’t help but tease Jace a little. Especially considering Jace didn’t know anything about their relationship in the dreams where Jace was the one who usually gave Simon a hard time.
“As for me, I’m here with my bandmates.” He gestured towards the three guys who were currently at the counter, ordering and generally flustering the girl taking their order.
***
Jace grinned at him. “Well...that’s the best part of her working here isn’t it? Plus I haven’t seen her very much lately. So ulterior motive there. But mostly - free pastry.” He admitted with a shrug.
He watched curiously. “No pastries for you or are they ordering yours?”
***
Simon glanced back over at the guys then back to Jace, trying to come up with a reason that he wasn’t ordering anything. Jace didn’t know that he was a vampire and couldn’t eat human food and this wasn’t the place to talk about it, “I’m trying to cut back on coffee and pastries.” He didn’t know if Jace would believe him or not, but either way it was the only thing he could say that would make any sense without telling him the truth.
***
“You’re trying to cut back on pastries while dating a baker?” Jace asked, one brow raised as he moved toward the counter to place his own order when the guys were finished. “I’m really starting to learn all kinds of things about my cousins and their partners living out here.” He joked.
***
“Right? I don’t know how I do it,” Simon laughed, albeit a little awkwardly and he hoped that Jace didn’t pick up on it. Honestly, he couldn’t wait until Jace knew about him and everything else from their dreams and he didn’t have to make things up.
“Hey, Si, who's your friend?” Kirk asked once the guys had gotten their orders and rejoined Simon.
“This is Isabelle’s cousin Jace,” It still seemed strange to think of Jace as Alec and Isabelle’s cousin since he knew the truth of Jace’s parentage in the dreams and he assumed it was similar in the waking world as well, but he didn’t know that for sure.
***
“Willpower and having more than me? I swear I couldn’t do it. I’m - “ he cut himself off before he could spill the beans about being in a relationship. It wasn’t that he thought Simon would mind - he knew Izzy too well to think she’d be with anybody who had a problem with two guys being together. But he and Nine weren’t using any labels about what they were. Other than exclusive. He swallowed, hoping the other man wouldn’t question the pause he’d given. “I have a hard enough time and I’m just related to one.” He said.
Jace gave a short wave as Simon’s bandmates came over to join them as they stood there talking. “Nice to meet you guys.” He said, glancing back at Simon in curiosity because he knew Simon was in a band but he couldn’t for the life of him remember if anybody had ever told him the name of the band or of any of Simon’s bandmates.
***
Had Jace mentioned he was in a relationship he wouldn’t have questioned it, but finding out that Jace Herondale, who it seemed every girl was attracted to, was dating a guy, that would have been surprising. Of course Simon wouldn’t have had a problem with it considering the number of people he was already friends with who were gay or bi, but hearing that Jace was, that would have been the surprise of a lifetime.
“Jace this is Kirk, Matt and Eric. My bandmates.” As Simon introduced the guys they all greeted Jace in one form or another, Matt looking him over a little more intently than the others before greeting him with a smirk. “And before you ask, we’re in the middle of debating on our current name.” The band changed names so often it was a wonder anyone was able to follow them.
***
“Get that question a lot Simon?” Jace asked him, trying to ignore the way the guy Simon had introduced to him as Matt was checking him out. He didn’t mind it and under other circumstances he might have flirted with him. The guy was pretty hot after all. But exclusive with Nine. And he wasn’t willing to fuck that up on purpose.
“What are the options? Maybe I can help settle the debate on it for the time being.”
***
“How much time do you have?” Kyle chuckled and took a sip of his latte.
Simon shook his head, smirking, “We change our name a lot. Craven Loons was the most recent one.”
“But we were thinking of going back to Rock Solid Panda.” Kirk added.
“Speaking of Craven Loons slash Rock Solid Panda, we should get back to practice.” Simon said, glancing at each of the guys before landing back on Jace, “We have a gig coming up, so we have to work on our new setlist.”
***
Jace grinned. He couldn’t help it - he liked these guys. They seemed fun. “How about a hybrid to think about - Craven Panda or Rock Solid Loons,” he suggested, catching sight of what he thought was a familiar dark head of hair in the back. “I’ll let you guys get to it. I think I see my favorite lady cousin about to peek her head out. It was great meeting you Simon. Well - meeting you better. We should hang out sometime when you’ve got your setlist worked out.” He gave Izzy’s boyfriend a friendly wave and walked away to the counter, leaning forward slightly to catch the eye of whoever it was in the back and grinning as he waved at them.
