It had been many years since Dan had turned in his badge and gun. He was a very different man than he had been back then and had done so many things that would have disgusted the man he’d once been. He was retired from all of that now and he liked to think he was a better man for it. He had Liv to thank for that.
Perhaps Liv’s sense of justice was starting to wear off on him a little, as well. Perhaps she reminded him of the detective he’d been once and was the reason that was again starting to rise to the surface. So when Liv had come to him stating that she wanted to go to the alley where the latest victim on her table had been found he had immediately agreed to go with her.
The scene had long been processed, there wasn’t any danger of the two of them disturbing any evidence or really interfering with any sort of official police investigation. Besides, Liv was the M.E. assigned to the case. If an officer or detective happened to come by, they could easily say she was gathering more information to add to her final report.
There was something off about this man’s death. Probably the fact that Leon’s shooting had been pinned on him. Liv knew for a fact that wasn’t true. Leon had been shot in the dreams. So why had this guy taken the fall? And why did he show up in her morgue with his throat slashed?
Usually Liv stuck to eating the brains of the victims Leon was assigned to. He was the only cop that would take her out to investigate. Of course he hadn’t been assigned this case due to the conflict of interest. But Liv she couldn’t help herself. She needed to know what had happened.
Lucky for Liv her boyfriend was good at this sort of thing. Investigations, being a former cop and all. Not just that but he knew how to hide in the shadows, thanks to his other job. The one Liv didn’t like thinking about that he had thankfully retired from now.
“Thanks for doing this,” Liv said as they slowly made their way through the alley. Liv examining every single detail hoping it would trigger a vision. “I’m glad Alex is free but something is off.”
Dan shrugged slightly. “Ye don’t have to thank me, Darlin’,” he said. “Somethin’ is off. I’m glad Alex is free too and he an’ Leon can get on with their lives, but yer right.” His eyes moved over the alley they were standing at the mouth of. “The whole thing is off. You an’ I both know that no one actually shot Leon. No one here at any rate. The poor S.O.B. in your lab is a patsy. Leon’s a good cop, I don’t think he’d feel right if he knew some innocent man was killed so Alex could go free.”
Even as he spoke the words, however, he wasn’t sure how true they were. Leon had broken him out of jail not that long ago. And though he’d been squirely about the whole procedure and made Dan swear to never bring it up again, the fact remained that he had done it. He’d done it as a favor for a friend. What was the other man capable of doing in the name of someone he was in love with.
It was a huge jump between breaking an innocent man out of jail and committing murder, however. Dan didn’t want to think that Leon was capable of making that jump. He honestly hoped that the alley would provide them with the evidence that Leon wasn’t responsible. The last thing Dan wanted to see was Leon to fall from grace the same way he had. It was a hard path to go down. If Dan could save him from that path, he would do everything he could to do so.
He glanced at Liv before starting to make his way down the alley. “Let’s see what we can find.”
There was a part of Liv that felt guilty about this. Like she was going behind Leon’s back. But she couldn’t help herself. She needed to know the truth. “Exactly,” Liv agreed. “Someone set this up.” She didn’t think it was Leon. He was talking about getting a lawyer. Sure he might have ended up doing something illegal to get Alex out of jail, like he had done for Dan. But she knew Leon wasn’t capable of killing an innocent person.
“I just don’t know who woul-” her sentence was cut off as she stared blankly ahead. At least that was what it would look like to Dan. But of course she was having a vision.
Liv as the victim walked through the alley, presumably making his way home. That was when a man quickly approached. He was pale, though not as pale as Liv was, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. There was something devilish about him. He came for the man.
And that was it. Her vision was over. It wasn’t much but Liv was pretty sure she had just seen the killer. “I think I saw him.”
Dan had seen Liv have a couple of visions before and he recognized the faraway look that came over her when she had one. It was a little creepy, he would admit, how she just zoned out at random. At least this time they weren’t plummeting at terminal velocity towards the ground.
He watched her carefully for a moment patiently waiting for her to snap back to. Occasionally his eyes, moved to the mouth of the alley, just in case company should happen to arrive unannounced. Thankfully, they were left alone.
And then Liv was back, life and light seeming to blink back to her eyes. “Saw who, Darlin’?” He asked her gently, but with urgency. “The killer?” His eyes set, almost fearful of the answer to his next question, “didja recognize who it was?”
Liv gave a small nod to Dan’s first question. “I’m pretty sure it was him.” Granted she didn’t actually see the murder, but then she never did. But she was ninety-nine percent sure it was the man she saw. “No,” Liv added. “I don’t know who it was. Just what he looked like,” she paused as she pondered it for a moment. “We should talk to one of the sketch artists.”
Dan let out a small breath in relief that Liv hadn’t recognized the killer. That meant that it wasn’t Leon. But his relief was quickly short lived. An unknown killer posed a number of possibilities and none of them eased Dan’s mind. He still didn’t know what Leon’s connection to any of this was and he still believed that his friend to be a good cop. He owed it to Leon to figure this out and no matter what protect the other man from any further fall out.
He nodded his head. “Aye, I think that’s a good idea. I’d like to see this man for myself.”
“Let’s go,” Liv said grabbing Dan’s hand. She was ready to get out of this alley. Not only did she not want to get caught snooping around, but also now that she had seen the possible killer she was pretty creeped out. What if he came back? Not that he could really hurt her but the fear was still there. Probably mixed with the victim’s fear.
“I know someone we can call,” Liv said as they made their way back to the car. She did have a few connections working for the police department after all.
Dan wasn’t afraid, considering what his former line of profession had been. Still, he didn’t have any desire to linger at the murder scene. He cast one last look over his shoulder as Liv lead him out of the alley. They had a little more to go on now than they had before, but Dan still couldn’t shake that uneasy feeling that there was something more going on behind the scenes. It was the not knowing that bothered him most of all.
He dug the car keys out of his pocket. “Aye, let’s make that call, lass,” he said. “The sooner we figure this out, the better, I think.”
