Freya had proven herself to be cut from a different cloth than her siblings, but Tyler still knew that getting mixed up with the Mikaelson’s any more than necessary was a risky move.
But she’d really come through for him and Caroline, and he couldn’t forget that. Without her, he would have lost Caroline, indirectly due to his sire bond with Klaus. It had been his dream self that had bitten her, but he was sure that wouldn’t have lessened the guilt at all if he hadn’t been able to save her.
Drinks wouldn’t cover it, but it was the best he could do until Freya called upon the favour he’d offered her. “So, how’d things go with Klaus?” Tyler asked. He had some kind of idea - Klaus had been more demanding since he and Caroline had ended up on his doorstop, which wasn’t exactly a good sign - but it wasn’t like Klaus was what most people would consider forthcoming.
Freya was….. Exhausted. She’d been exhausted before everything had happened given the breakneck pace she’d been keeping between travelling to Texas, the border, having to go to New York because of her work with the UN and then back again. Add in Evie being away in London for work, and now everything with Klaus…. Well. Her girlfriend was right. She needed a vacation. A working vacation but a vacation all the same.
Still, she was currently in Orange County and when Tyler had invited her out for drinks? Who was she to say no. Drinks and Mikaelsons tended to be a thing.
And there was the question. Freya was still beyond upset with her brother, and all she could do was roll her eyes. Niklaus would be Niklaus and a petulant child. But she knew (hoped) that he would eventually settle and she could go back to their home. For now though, she only went when she knew he was at work so she could get things she needed if it became necessary.
“As well as could be expected I suppose.” There was no need to drag Tyler into all of that. She didn’t regret her choice for a second even if right now she was now having to alternate which brother she was staying with until this all hopefully blew over.
“That bad, huh?” Tyler asked, raising an eyebrow. ‘As good as could be expected,’ when it came to Klaus, seemed to translate to ‘at least he didn’t kill me.’ Freya was still human, which meant that he wouldn’t be able to use his usual methods of stabbing her with a stake and keeping her in a coffin for a century or two.
“I’d offer to help, but…” Well, when it came to Klaus, there was exactly nothing Tyler could do that Klaus didn’t want him to.
Sometimes less was more. Besides, anyone who knew Klaus would have an idea on what it meant by what Freya said. But there was also no need to go into the details. Especially to either Caroline or Tyler. She had made her decision, she lived with the consequences even if it was Klaus and his idiotic stubborn pride and anger. But he had always been like that. Freya usually could handle it but she could be just as stubborn depending on the situation.
And while there was the time she’d been immortal more or less in the dreams, it was hard to say if her mortality had returned here as she’d managed to survive being thrown out a window months before. And it wasn’t like either of them were going to test that. So Klaus’ method of daggering her wouldn’t do any good so all he could do was throw her out.
“Basically.” And then the comment on how he’d offer to help but trailed off which had her smile some, “Well the thought is appreciated even if you could do something about it. It’s fine though.”
Tyler didn’t particularly enjoy feeling so useless, but Klaus had forbidden him from breaking the sire bond, and so there wasn’t much he could do. It was one of the worst feelings though. But at least people weren’t keeping things from him here like they had in the dreams. Then again, as far as he knew, no one here was plotting against Klaus here.
“Other than the Klaus of it all, how have things been?” he asked after a moment. Because he had been spending a lot of time with Klaus lately, he knew that she hadn’t been around lately, and he hoped she was actually doing things she wanted to do in the meantime.
While Freya had never been bonded to someone in the way of the Sire bond, she knew all too well what it was like to be under someone else’s thumb and rule with no foreseeable way out. That had been her life with Dahlia both here and the Dreams. It was one of the reasons she had such a thing about people having a choice in their lives.
“Other than the Klaus of it all, work has been keeping me busier than usual.” Understatement. Which was Freya’s way. “So I’ve been travelling a lot.”
“Sounds like a nice escape from the dreams, at least,” Tyler said, grinning a bit. He had spent some time out of the county since he started dreaming, and they never plagued his sleep once he was outside its borders. He hadn’t even gotten repeats while he’d been away. “Where’ve you been going?”
“About the only thing it’s an escape from.” Which did help matters. Given the nature of dreaming of New Orleans and the constant drama and stress? Well Freya had enough of that in the waking world with work and Klaus on a good day. So she would take it.
“Mostly Texas and the so called detention centers. But also the border in Arizona and here as well as some trips to New York since that’s where the UN itself is.”
“Things’ve got to be getting pretty tense around there,” Tyler said. He didn’t really follow or care about politics at all; his father was a senator, and that alone had soured him to the entire thing. But even he couldn’t escape the news these days.
Even with Mikael as a congressman, Freya couldn’t avoid the world at large and politics. True, her politics, work, and basically entire existence were the complete opposite of her father’s which...always made things interesting as of late, but it tied into her work and so she had to stay on top of it. Even as everything she saw as of late just managed to make her angry.
“That would be an understatement.” And that made her finish her drink because if it wasn’t one thing, it was another. “But it’s work that needs to be done.” It just meant she was barely in Orange County at the moment, to the point where it was beginning to be even a bit much for Freya, who was used to doing numerous things at once.
Tyler frowned in sympathy. He was glad his jobs mostly consisted of kicking underage kids out of Damon’s bar, and yelling at college football players. “Better you than me,” he said, with a bit of a teasing grin. “Seriously though, good for you. Hopefully you’ll start to be able to catch a break at home, too.”
“I seem to get that a lot.” But it was work she enjoyed. Usually. Right now it felt hopeless but she wasn’t going to let that get her down. She was at least still able to make quips like that about it, so that was something. As for catching a break at home? Well. She had Dahlia’s voice in the back of her head saying this was just the start of her siblings pushing her away as she’d always worried but that was something else she pushed away. “They usually do. Eventually.” Hopefully sooner rather than later though.
Usually, though not always. Though, as far as Klaus and his family was concerned, ,Tyler didn’t have any doubt that amends would be made sooner or later. “I hope soon. Klaus has been breathing down my neck ever since you guys had your fight.”
All things considered, Freya couldn’t say that she was shocked by that. When he was angry, he lashed out at others. And Freya wasn’t there to attempt to rein him in. It did seem to be between her and Elijah to do that usually, especially the dreams, so without her living there at the moment… “Sorry about that. But I do hope it’s soon as well.”
“It’s not your fault,” Tyler responded. “Hell, if it wasn’t for you, Caroline would be dead. I’ll take Klaus over that any day.” Especially since there was still a part of him, a part he tried very hard to ignore that made him hate himself, that still loved Klaus and felt indebted to him.
Freya inclined her head some in acknowledgement of the fact. While she did feel bad that Tyler was apparently getting the brunt of Klaus’....Klaus-ness since she wasn’t there to rein him in to some degree, Klaus had been the one to kick her out and it was all because she dared to save someone’s life with his blood. And saving Caroline’s life was worth it.
“Touche.”
“Enough about Klaus,” Tyler said, and flagged down one of the waitresses. “I think that we’ve both deserved to get our drink on,” he said, as she approached the table. “Another round for me and my friend.” Or, if not friend, at least someone he considered an ally.
