Rose had talked to York a couple of times on the network, mostly about his dog. He seemed like a nice guy and from what she could tell of his profile pic, cute. When the flirtation over the network was returned, Rose didn’t have to think twice about taking him up on his offer. Laying around in bed all day, netflix, food, and a dog? Rose was BEYOND thrilled. Plus, if it lead to other things, who was she to say no?
She shot him a quick text when she was on her way, wondering if it was too presumptuous to bring an overnight bag. If only she had her own car, it could be her backup bag, but that’s what you got when you worked part time at a bakery. Still, she couldn’t be too upset. She could bring a small bag so that it almost looked like a purse. Even if it was a bit much for their first date (was this a date?), she figured the worst was she would have to lug it around town.
She glanced down at her phone once she arrived, making sure she had the right house. York had told her he had a roommate and she wondered if he would be home. She only hesitated for a moment before she knocked on the door, rocking back on her heels as if she had been over before.
As luck would have it, York’s roommate was home. York had sent Wash a text letting him know he was having company over and Wash was still a little uncertain what the expectation of this visit was. The few “ground rules” York had for the house hadn’t covered guests as much as it had what was the expected attire and food for Saturday mornings.
Wash knew York was a little touchy about the subject of his love life and hadn’t exactly had the best of luck since leaving the marines. Considering all that he’d done for Wash the past year or so, Wash figured the least he could do was give York and Rose some space. Regardless of what expectations were they didn’t need to have a third wheel hanging around making things awkward.
Wash had just finished stuffing a few things into an overnight bag himself to take to Anna’s when Rose knocked on the door. Immediately Scooby was on alert, scrambling from the living room to the front door. Sophie – Wash’s service dog – wasn’t too far behind him. Both were barking. Scooby was barking in excitement, Sophie to alert her master that someone had breached the perimeter. The combination of great dane and german shepherd was deafening.
“Alright,” Wash called as he quickly made his way out of the room. “Good dogs. Good dogs. I hear it. That’s enough, Scoob.”
Once the dogs had quieted, and Wash had managed to wrangle Scooby behind him and got a good hold of his collar so he wouldn’t bowl over whoever was at the door, Wash peered out the window by the door. He recognized Rose from her picture on the network and he spotted the bag she was carrying with her.
It took a little more juggling Scooby around before Wash could get the door open. “Hi.” He greeted. “Rose, right?”
The barks that greeted her seemed both friendly and intense at the same time. How many dogs did he have? She was questioning if she was going to get attacked by dogs as the door opened and a face peeked around the door. It wasn’t who she was expecting to see, but he did look familiar.
“Hey...yeah, I’m Rose,” she said, figuring she was at least expected. “Uh, is York around?” She tilted her head to the side, trying to remember how she knew this guy. Did he come into Baxter’s and she just recognized him? Maybe. But she felt like he reminded her of…
“Oh! You’re…” She closed one eye as she tried to concentrate on remembering his name. “Wash? I think we talked a bit late last year!” Yeah, it was him! She couldn’t help but laugh as the conversation came back to her. “About turning into a monkey for Halloween!” Finally recognizing the face, Rose felt a bit more at ease until she heard the whining of the dogs once more. She glanced around the door, seeing two of them staring back up at her. She recognized Scooby and she assumed the other was Wash’s.
“I didn’t know York had a flatmate,” she said, sliding inside so as not to let the dogs out. She started to reach out to pet the dogs and stopped. “Is it ok to pet ‘em?”
Wash smiled. “That’s me,” he confirmed for her. “It’s nice to meet you, Rose.” He remembered speaking with her on the network last year, but her memory of their conversation was much better than his. He scooched Scooby back so Rose could get inside.
Sophie, the German Shepherd was already sitting a few feet away, her tail wagging against the floor as she watched Rose enter. Her human didn’t seem threatened, so the dog was calm and relaxed. Scooby was just excited for the company.
“Uh,” Wash glanced down at the puppy whose collar he was still gripping tightly. “Yeah, sure. I’m sure you’ve already heard about Scooby. Scooby, sit. Sit.”
Scooby plopped his little dog butt on the floor in anticipation for pats. As Rose petted the puppy, Wash glanced back at the other dog. “And this is Sophie. She’s my, uh, my service dog. She’s ok to pet too. Sophie, to me.” Sophie obediently got to her feet and came over to sit by Wash’s leg. She looked up at Rose with a big happy smile on her face.
“Nice to meetcha too!” Rose grinned, feeling a bit more at ease. She glanced between the two dogs and smiled as she saw Wash trying to teach and instruct Scooby. “Is it hard? Training dogs?” Rose didn’t have any pets growing up, except for that one goldfish.
She put her hand out for Sophie to smell, impressed with the direction she took. Well, at least they had experience in training a dog before. Or maybe she had already been trained? Was that an appropriate question to ask? She glanced at Wash and decided against. If she was still curious, she could ask York.
Giving Sophie a pet, Rose glanced around the house. “Nice place,” she said, not thinking she’d have to come up with a lot of small talk today. “You guys been here long?”
York hadn’t had a girl over to his place in a really, really long time. It’d been so long, in fact, that he wasn’t really sure what to do with himself. The good news was that they actually hadn’t been in the house for that long--so it hadn’t had much chance to get messy. (Not that it would get overly messy, York and Wash were both ex-military, and kept things pretty neat and tidy.) The animals were all settled in, the furniture was all in place, and the kitchen was full of dishes and utensils. The place was pretty perfect, actually. York was a happy guy.
He was setting some stuff up in the living room--getting the movie in place, throw blanket on the sofa, popcorn in a bowl. There were drinks: soda, sparkling water, juice, hot chocolate. They usually didn't have any alcohol in the house, but he had gotten a couple beers. Besides, that wasn’t why Rose was coming over, right?
“Coming!” He called out from the living room area when he heard the voices in the front hall. He jumped over the back of the sofa and stumbled, his socked toe catching on the rug. There was a thump-thump, then a quiet curse, then York appeared in the entryway, pink-cheeked and grinning. “Hey!”
Wash was about to answer both of Rose’s questions when York called out from the living room, followed by a thumb and then there he was in the front hall all grins. It was kind of endearing, seeing how happy York was to have company over. Again, Wash didn’t want to get in the way. He looked back at Rose and gave a casual shrug. “It can be time consuming,” he answered her in reference to the dogs. “Sophie had a bit of training when we found her and Scooby, well…” he glanced down at the puppy between them. “A little more work has to go into him.”
He glanced at York and gave his roommate and former XO a grin. “I’ll get outta your way for a while,” he said. Then to Rose, “it was nice meeting you, Rose. Hopefully I’ll see you around again soon.”
Rose jumped a bit at the thump and couldn’t help but grin back when York came into the room. “Hey yourself!” she said, finding herself feeling a bit...well, awkward. She wasn’t expecting anything from tonight, but the implication from the network made it seem like more of an intimate affair. So having the roommate there as well, knowing that this was kind of a last minute date situation...but everything seemed to resolve itself when Wash excused himself. “Bye Wash!” She gave him a small wave, surprised at how easy it actually was. She glanced at York, her grin growing once more.
York gave Wash a bright grin as his best friend and roommate left the two of them alone in the foyer. He’d have to ask Wash all the questions later about Wash’s first opinions of this beautiful woman, but for now he wanted to give her his full attention.
With a dopey grin on his face, York turned to Rose. He shrugged his shoulders. “So, you’ve met the roommate. We can mark that off the list of awkward things to do.”
Rose laughed, feeling a bit more at ease. Yeah, it did feel a bit awkward, but it could have been a lot worse. “Great, just a few more to tick off and we’ll finally feel comfortable with each other.” She placed her hands on her hips, glancing around. “You’ve got the snacks and such? I brought the snuggles, but only if the snacks pass approval.” Her tone was teasing as this whole setup was meant to be fun, right? Sometimes you just wanted to snuggle with someone and have it be cool...maybe York would be her new snuggle buddy! She wouldn’t protest!
With a gentle chuckle, York nodded. “I’ve got snacks and such. And dog, and movies.” He motioned for her to follow him into the kitchen so they could dig out some snacks. Popcorn, drinks, cookies, chips, he had it all. York was a but of a snack food junkie--it used to get him in trouble with Carolina. But he wasn’t going to think about her now. “I’m not sure what you like, so I’ve got Netflix signed on, I figure we can just pick from there.”
Then he opened the snack cupboard and it was practically overflowing with sweet, savory, and everything-in-between snacks.
“I’m pretty easy,” she said, not realizing the connotation until a minute after she said it. A blush crept across her face but she just grinned, shrugging as if to say “oh well”. “Nice snack selection my friend.” In Rose’s opinion, you could never have too many snacks or variety of them. “It’s hard to choose though...maybe just one of everything?” Was that too much? “Or one type of chip, cookies, candy, etc?”
York turned to look at her, raising one eyebrow. Easy, huh? That was nice to know. He couldn’t help but break into a smile, though, after the teasing eyebrow. Then he grabbed a bag of chips. “We can start with these. What goes with…” he turned to read the front of the bag, “Cheddar cheese Ruffles?”
Rose pretended to give it a lot of thought, her index finger tapping against her chin. “Hmmmm...definitely something sweet to go with the salty. Chocolate?” No one could say no to chocolate.
“Chocolate chip cookies?” York offered. He shifted some things around in the cabinet until he unearthed a package of cookies. “And there are drinks in the fridge, you want to grab a couple?” He asked, grinning over the snack foods at her. ...she was really pretty.
“Brilliant!” York seemed to know his snacks and Rose could only grin as she watched him rummage around through the various eateries he had. There was something about him that was so adorable and hot at the same time...two words that Rose didn’t think could be combined together. She bit down on her thumbnail as she watched him, thinking it might have to do with his cute behavior and smokin’ hot body. Something she was definitely checking out as he pulled her out of her reverie with comments about drinks.
She blinked, looking up at him and realizing he was looking at her like she was looking at him. She blushed, trying to look everywhere but at him. “Hmmm? Oh...oh! Yeah! Drinks! Of course, I got ya!” She turned to the fridge, pulling it open to grab two beers.
“Drinks check!” She held up the bottles in triumph, a grin on her face.
“Check!” York repeated after her. He normally didn’t keep alcohol in the house, because of Wash’s alcoholism, but he’d gotten a few special for this occasion. It’d be nice to have a couple of beers with a beautiful girl, eat some snacks, and watch some good movies… and cuddle. He was really looking forward to cuddling. Hoping it wouldn’t be awkward.
He was already on the sofa, the snacks organized on the coffee table, remote in his hand. “Come sit, and we’ll pick a movie.”
Rose didn’t even hesitate to plop down right next to him, folding her legs up to sit cross-legged. Her knee brushed against his, only a slight touch between the two of them. She handed him one of the beers, leaning back into the couch.
“Nothing too scary,” she said, glancing from the telly to him. “I make a complete ass outta myself when watching them! I get scared too easily!” She grinned, holding her bottle out for a cheers. “To Netflix and snuggles!”
