Who: Shepard and Evie
What: Shepard is conducting an interview for one of the Agency's strike teams.
When: Late June
Where: A restaurant
Warnings: Pretty low
There were two kinds of interviews. The fancy kind, with suits and ties and skirts in an office, and the kind that involved live fire exercises. Shepard being Shepard, this tended towards the latter. At least, that was the plan.
But first, there was lunch, a nice casual setting to meet and talk and get an idea of each other.
That, and Shepard was starving.
Evie liked live fire exercises, but being a military woman, that was kind of her thing. Also her skills as an Assassin made her like that even more. She didn’t mind formal interviews, she had pant suits to accommodate for that. For this interview, she went middle of the road in her manner of dress. She had a shirt and pants on, and her hair was pulled into a French braid. She had two necklaces on, one being the amulet of protection Freya had made for her, the other having her dog tags on them. She was proud of her military career.
Arriving at the meeting place, Evie quickly spotted Shepard and approached with a polite smile. She was masking her anxiety and frustration with the world at large quite well.
“Hello,” she greeted.
“Hello.” Shepard said, offering her hand for a firm shake. “Welcome to part 1 of the interview, I don’t usually do this kind of thing, but it’s a special circumstance.” Shepard shrugged her shoulder, “Last interview I did involved high caliber weaponry. So that’s gonna be part 2.”
“Sometimes you have to make exceptions for special circumstances,” she responded, returning the firm handshake before she sat down. “Luckily, I’m a good shot and proficient in high caliber weaponry.” Even if Evie thought guns were rather crude considering she was a silent and highly efficient killer.
“Good.” though living weapons were the best weapons. Shepard gestured to the menu, “Lets order and then I can give you some more detail about what it is we do.” Or rather, what they thought Evie might be best for. Nat had, for some reason, wanted Shepard to make the contact before she spoke to Evie.
“Alright, that works for me.” Evie looked over the menu. Typically she didn’t mind small talk, but when it came to something like this, she liked getting to the point. Though her patience of late had also been next to non-existent thanks to the happenings of the world, and the personal struggle she’d been having with her dreams. Jack was still in her head, and she didn’t like it.
Shepard ordered a chicken sandwich, wanting something light but with protein. She’d need it later, she was sure. “How much do you know about the Agency? I know there’s plenty of talk on the net.”
Evie ordered a similar dish, something lighter but having protein. At the question, she turned her attention to Shepard. “Not nearly as much as I’d like to. Though from what I’ve been able to tell, the Agency coordinates some sort of response to the various crises that happen in Orange County.”
“That’s a big part of it,” Shepard replied, giving her drink a little sip. “There’s one other part. Secrecy. I’m sure you can imagine what could happen if unsavory sorts had any idea what really happened here in Orange County.”
“I can. Considering in my dreams, my Order operates in the shadows, I am more than capable of keeping secrets. I also work for MI6 and was Special Forces in the British military.” Evie was somewhat certain that Shepard already knew her qualifications, but she still laid them out. After all, the point of an interview was to sell yourself.
“So you’re the best of the best then,” Shepard replied. “This sounds like it’s right up your alley. But can you handle aliens? Monsters? Psychopathic mass hallucinations?”
“Counter-terrorism is my specialty.” Aliens, monsters and psychopathic mass hallucinations weren’t things she was used to, but she’d dealt with them since she’d moved here. “I have thus far. I’ve been out there fighting and dealing with whatever this place throws at us as my skills allow me to.”
“Counter-terrorism is the big reason we want you,” Shepard admitted. “Because it’s not always aliens and monsters coming through. That’s usually my thing. Sometimes it’s terrorists, assassins and the more low-key kind of human monster. Which is more the Director’s thing, but she can’t do all of that on her own anymore, even with the network she’s built.”
“Terrorists, assassins, things of the human monster I can handle. I also have abilities from my dreams that can help in such situations. Those, however, should wait for demonstration.” She didn’t need to pull out her throwing knives or use her invisibility ability right here and now. There was also the parkour skills she had.
“A friend has a training center outside of town. If you don’t mind a bit of a drive we can show each other what we can do.” Shepard was pretty sure Evie’s skills were top knotch, but she was curious about everything else. With her sandwich in hand, she asked, “Important question. What do you do in your offtime?”
“No, I don’t mind at all. I look forward to it.” Luckily, Evie had her gauntlet and some of her Assassin weapons of choice (namely several throwing knives and her cane-sword) in her car. She took a bite of her food. “I workout at the gym, spend time with my dog and my girlfriend. I also track terrorist cells and tend to do one woman takedowns of them on occasion.”
“Wait, wait,” Shepard held up her hand and laughed. “Part of your offtime is tracking terrorists? The Director is going to love you.”
“I do. I can’t very well do it while I’m at my day job. I don’t want my superiors to know what I’m up to.” Considering it wasn’t exactly sanctioned behavior and all. “I keep such activities very well hidden. Especially given a dream ability of mine allows me to see things written that only Assassins can read.” It wasn’t exactly invisible ink, but Evie had an ability to let her see what could not be seen by those without her ability. Or those who didn’t have a spell that could reveal it.
“Oh, so it’s that kind of work.” Shepard pulled something out of her pocket, a little black book. She flipped through it. “I take it you were responsible for cleaning up that mess in Pakistan? I can’t think of anyone else with the skills.”
She paused, “Could you see invisible ink without any special tricks then?”
“Yes, that would be me.” Such missions tended to take a lot of meticulous planning, and she certainly had them carefully laid out, for the most part. Save the one where she’d gotten shot, but there were extenuating circumstances relating to her liking Freya as more than a friend and being afraid of it.
“I have not tried that, to be honest. I have more of a...sixth sense, I suppose? In my dreams, Assassins have a secret writing that only we can see. It also allows us to discern friends from foes. Mine is exceptionally powerful.” While all Assassins had Eagle Vision, it was a trait that varied in how strong it was.
Shepard nodded. Something like that could be incredibly handy, “All right, before we go blow things up, how adverse are you to undercover work?”
“I’m not adverse to undercover work, though I do not have experience with that.” Still, given enough warning, the necessary tools and ability to let Freya know she was going silent on a mission, things would be perfectly fine. Given Evie already operated from the shadows, it would be relatively easy to transition into doing some undercover work.
“That’s good enough,” Shepard decided. She wiped her hands on a napkin, “the Director will want to take you on at least one operation like that and they’re not always milk runs.”
Nat didn’t even tell Shepard half the things she got into.
“Luckily, I’m used to high stakes and high stress operations.” Evie wasn’t the best at being flexible on the fly, but as long as a plan was being adhered to, she could deal with it. So long as no one did what her brother tended to do and blunder about blindly, of course.
Grinning, Shepard got to her feet and tossed a tip on the table, “Come on. I’m technically supposed to have you show me your skill set and show you some of mine, but it’s mostly just an excuse to blow a few things up.”
“Well, I’m all about show and tell, though explosions are not quite my thing. I prefer silent but deadly. But perhaps this time, I can make an exception.” Evie said as she got to her feet. Sure she knew how to handle military grade weapons, but that didn’t mean she preferred them.
“There’ll be that too,” Shepard assured her. The Danger Room could be set up for pure stealth as easily as a place to go full Biotic on. One benefit of Kitty being in charge of IT.
“Then I’m all in,” Evie responded with a smile. Luckily she had her Assassin tools in her car, so she could make the most of the experience.
