Who: Elena and Klaus
What: Running into each other- literally
When: Today
Where: On the street
Rating: Pretty low - light threats from Klaus
Status: Complete
Elena was thoroughly enjoying a summer without much of a course load. She’d forgotten how nice it was to sleep in sometimes, or go to the beach, or, as she had just done, go out for a nice lunch. And now, sated on fresh tacos and a light beer or two, she was intent on spending the next few hours in the bright sunshine and further developing the golden tan that had warmed her skin as of late.
As she exited the restaurant, though, she managed to run right into a passer-by. The apology was already leaving her lips before she realized who exactly she had run into. “...Klaus.” A fear flickered that hadn’t been in her gaze on previous encounters. Having dreamed of him and all of the cruelty he was capable of, Elena’s opinion of him had changed all the more since their first meeting. And he likely didn’t care one way or the other.

Klaus preferred not to be home. Without Freya there the house just felt too big. Lonely even. Granted Freya was hardly home even before their argument, traveling for work or staying with her girlfriend that looked a hell of a lot like Hope’s mother. But this was different. He wasn’t sure if she was ever coming back. And Klaus, well he had too much pride to admit that he missed her. That he fucked up. So distracting himself it was.
He spent his days at the gallery. His nights at bars feeding on different women and sleeping with some of them. Hell he even found himself calling Jessica more frequently for some late night fun. But it was daytime at the moment which meant time at the gallery. He was on his way back from Baxter’s Bakery when someone rahter rudely bumped into him. He was about to protest when he saw who it was. “Hello, love.”
**
Truthfully, she wasn’t sure what to say. He had nearly bitten her head off the last time she asked how he was, luckily a figurative biting it she wasn’t in any rush to repeat that. But it did rather hamper any social niceties.
“I had a dream about you.” It was out almost before Elena realized it. Her tone wasn’t flirty, though, no smile playing about her lips. “I was a doppelganger and you needed me to break a curse.” Better than stating outright that he had killed her. They were in public, after all.
**
While Elena’s tone wasn’t flirty, Klaus was still about to respond with a somewhat flirty comment of his own. How that wasn’t the first time he’d heard someone dreamed about him. Which was true and not just in the Mystic Falls dreams sense. But then she went on to talk about those Mystic Falls dreams.
“The curse my mother put on me,” Klaus replied casually. “I’m well aware.” What was she expecting? An apology? She certainly wasn’t about to get it. Even if he did care, he wasn’t going to apologize for his dreamself’s actions.
**
The admission didn’t really serve to help matters. He had dreamed of Mystic Falls, just as she had and then had cultivated something of a relationship, albeit not a formal one, in the real world.
“Had you already dreamed about that when we met?”
**
Not only had Klaus dreamed that already. It was the dream that had made him what he was. The Original Hybrid. The dream that changed his life in this world. As for Mystic Falls? He had dreamed well beyond that now. That was just a footnote in his over a thousand years of life. Perhaps Elena needed to be reminded of that.
“Love, I’ve dreamed over a thousand years. My time in Mystic Falls was nothing.”
**
That wasn’t what she’d been driving at, though. “It didn’t seem weird to you? To dream about killing someone and then flirting with them in real life?” Because she was having trouble with that bit, to be honest. They were just dreams, of course, but they had felt so real. Elena felt slightly uncomfortable, even knowing that this was a different person from the dream world, just as she or Damon or Stefan were different from theirs.
She just couldn’t quite wrap her mind around how he was able to compartmentalize everything so effectively.
**
“No,” Klaus growled suddenly angry at what he was being accused of. “Last I checked I had done nothing to you in real life,” he continued. “But that can easily be changed,” he added his eyes glowing yellow. He didn’t have time for Elena’s little guilt trips. Nor did he care about them. If she was going to continue down this path he would make sure she got just the Klaus she was accusing him of being.
**
That change made Elena’s heart pound, though she didn’t step back. Even in the dreams, she had faced him, scared though she might have been.
“I just don’t understand.” Though perhaps she should have been more concerned with her initial phrasing and unintentional accusation. Pissing off Klaus never ended well. “You can keep the two so separate.” It was something Elena struggled with.
**
“And clearly you can’t,” Klaus replied eyes still yellow. He was not in the mood for Elena’s confusion between real life and dreams. “Now I suggest you go. Before I show you the devil you dream of.”
**
Clearly the two weren’t quite so separate. But something told Elena that she wouldn’t be doing herself any favors by pushing more even d she did hesitate. Would he really attack her in broad daylight? In the end she decided to react sensibly.
“Goodbye,” she murmured, retreating before he could change his mind.
