Leon had never been shot before, and if he had any say in the matter, he never would be again. Waking up filled with three bullets had been terrifying, but Alex had kept him alive until the paramedics had come, and the doctors had gotten him back to something resembling health. He was expected to make a full recovery, at least, which Leon tried to focus on instead of the fact that he couldn't sit up without a nurse to help him. After a few blood transfusions, his colour had started to come back, but even without a mirror he knew he probably still looked pale and wan.
The hospital food needed work. Cranky from the lack of cigarettes and beer, he stabbed at whatever the hell mush they had given him with a spoon, wondering if they expected him to actually want to eat what they’d put in front of him.
Needless to say, when Veronica walked in the room he was glad for the distraction. “Came to gawk at the invalid?” he asked her, and while he had meant for it to be a bit of a joke at his expense, his tone was more grumpy than anything.
Veronica may arm herself with sarcasm. But when it came down to it she truly cared for her friends. Of course when she had heard what happened to Leon she made it her priority to visit him. And although Leon may have made of joke, Veronica had checked her sarcasm at the door.
“Not today,” Veronica replied holding up a greasy bag. “I smuggled you some burgers”
Leon’s face lit up as soon as Veronica said the word burger. “Veronica, you’re the fucking best,” he exclaimed, reaching out for the burgers, but he felt a stabbing pain from the wound in his shoulder as soon as he tried to lift his arm. He grimaced, let his arm drop, and reached with the other arm. “Too bad you couldn’t smuggle me in a cigarette and a beer while you were at it.”
“I know,” Veronica replied with a small smirk. “Don’t forget that,” she added. Because as much as she enjoyed giving Leon a hard time (when he was healthy) he was usually giving it right back at her. But now she could always remind him that he did indeed call her the fucking best.
“Take what you can get, Orcot,” she replied letting him have the burgers. “If you’re nice next time I’ll bring a milkshake too.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Leon grumbled. “I’ll just blame the drugs if you ever bring this up again.” He reached for the burgers and started unwrapping them. The doctors and Alex hadn’t been letting Leon eat solids or drink sodas, but what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them. “Just don’t tell Alex about this, alright?”
“But that’s when the truth comes out,” Veronica replied with a smirk sitting down on the chair next to his bed. “Secrets safe with me.” Not like she particularly wanted to get bitched out by Leon’s boyfriend anyway.
“So,” Veronica started. “What exactlyhad slipped away after he’d been shot. Probably because he went and got himself shot. “I woke up in the hospital later,” with the nurses exclaiming it was a miracle he woke up, and D sitting at his hospital bedside peeling an apple for him, but Veronica didn’t need to know that.
It was probably a good thing that Leon left out the part about D. Veronica wasn’t exactly in her usual sarcastic mood. But there would have been no way to avoid teasing him about that one. “Can’t say I blame you, Orcot. Dream Veronica went after criminals with no back up all the time. Unless you count the dog.” But even he wasn’t always with her.
Leon smirked a little. “Well, Backup’s pretty good back up if you ask me.” He seemed protective of Veronica at least, and well trained. Everything someone could ask for in a dog, if one wanted all the responsibility of feeding one and walking one and picking up dog shit all day. “You ever get shot?” he asked.
“No,” she paused stealing a fry out of the bag and popping it into her mouth. “I’ve been shot at.” Along with roofied, tased, and set on fire. “But never actually shot.” A small smirk formed on her face. “Guess I’m just better at avoiding bullets than you.”
Leon rolled his eyes. “Or maybe your bad guys just have worse aim than mine,” Leon grumbled. Leon took a loud sip of his soda, knowing that the carbonation would wreak havoc on his stomach later but not really caring at the moment. Dammit, he deserved a coke and a burger, especially since he wasn’t allowed to smoke in his hospital room and he couldn’t exactly leave the room on his own right now. “Unless you’ve been holding out on me. You don’t have super speed, do you?”
“Nope,” Veronica replied with a shake of her head. “I’m just your regular human. Nothing supernatural about me or my dreams.” She knew that she was one of the odd ones out when it came to the network. Sure there were plenty of other humans on it, but even for humans their dreams usually had some sort of supernatural element in them.
“Good,” Leon said. Normal was good. Leon wanted to act like his own dreams were supernatural free too, but given the fact that he was pretty sure D could talk to animals, he wasn’t so sure about that. “I’d be nice if there was nothing supernatural about real life too, huh?”
“Maybe if we lived elsewhere,” Veronica replied with a smirk. It did seem to only be in Orange County. “But then, would you really want to give it all up?” As insane as it got to be here sometimes, it always kept things interesting. Not to mention Veronica would rather know what the hell was going on as opposed to being oblivious to it.
Leon opened his mouth to say of course he’d give it up, and gladly. But he couldn’t get the words out. There was a lot here that he wouldn’t ever want to give up, like Alex, and Chris, and even Veronica and Logan. And weirdly, as much as he hated the guy, he didn’t want to give up D until he dreamed he threw him away for life. “I guess not,” he admitted grudgingly. “The burgers here are too good.” As if to punctuate his point, he took another bite of the one sitting in front of him.
“You’re welcome,” Veronica replied with her usual smirk. “Now hurry up and get better already. Burgers are better at the restaurant. Nice and fresh. With a beer.”
