“Tell me again that we can’t go back and get a pet Raptor,” Jim said, popping a chip into his mouth and giving Clara a wide, teasing grin as he leaned on the counter of her diner. “Because I really want a baby raptor.”
Clara herself was leaning against the counter and simply rolled her eyes at Jim as he asked his question.
“We can’t go back and get a pet raptor. We’ve all seen the Jurassic Park movies, we’re not having that be a thing.”
Having to be a voice of logic wasn’t always odd for Clara. While she often enabled reckless behavior, she also knew the boundaries and when to resist the temptation to do something that would also be dangerous for the whole of a city. Dangerous and reckless to herself? Fine. To others? Not fine. Like going to the past to let Jim get a baby raptor for a pet.
“Real Raptors are tiny. The size of a dog, maybe less.” Kirk held his hands up in the right size. “I’m sure they could be trained.”
Honestly, sometimes it was like dealing with a child. Which….not all that different than dealing with the Doctor all things considered.
“No.”
She didn’t care that real raptors were tiny and the size of a dog. They were not bringing a prehistoric creature to live in the present. It was just asking for disaster and while she was all for adventures, she was also big on not being the cause of a disaster.
It wasn’t like they were talking about Utahraptors or something. Jim shook his head and sighed dramatically, “Clara, you never let me have any fun.”
Which as an abject lie, but this was why Jim needed both a Spock and a McCoy. One to enable and one to keep them from going too crazy.
“Yes yes, I know. I am just a destroyer of fun.”
Clara took no offense to the whining that she never let Jim have any fun. One, she often enabled his recklessness so she knew he was just sulking. Two, she used to be a teacher and if she had to put those ‘pants’ on as the saying went, so be it.
“Clara Oswald, destroyer of all that is fun,” Jim said, sweeping his hand out as if putting her name up in lights. “I’ll just have to get you involved in some other nonsense.”
Laughing some, Clara shook her head some. Just her plan, ruin all that was fun. “And what sort of other nonsense do you have in mind?”
After all, Clara did enjoy the nonsense. She had her random investigations, travelling, time with Bucky and friends but who didn’t want to partake in random nonsense as well? It wasn’t like it could kill her. She just had to worry about it killing others.
“I haven’t decided yet, but I’ll let you know when I figure it out.” Probably not something time travel related. As tempting as it might be to see if the TARDIS could breach not just time, but realities. Would that take either of them ‘home’? Or could he, say, save Edith Keeler, or his son.
Thoughts like that were why Time Travel was a dangerous prospect. “We should throw a party.”
Time Travel was dangerous and also there were rules. Rules which could be heartbreaking if they ended up in a fixed point and thus couldn’t save someone. They had lucked out with Gallifrey, it should have been impossible. But Clara knew that had been a lot of luck. Add in the rules of things here and who knew.
“Okay. A party. I could get behind that. What sort of party?”
“Costume party. I figure this time of year no one is going to turn into their costumes. Never do a costume party on Halloween in Orange County.”
Like a masquerade!
Clara had some memorable experiences when it came to costumes and Halloween thanks to Orange County. So avoiding a Halloween party at Halloween was probably a good idea.
“Okay that could definitely be fun.”
“Should it be themed?” Jim rubbed his jaw, deciding against something so collegeish as Greek or Roman. No, he wanted something more clever. “Or faux high class, like an old school masquerade.”
Themes. Themes were definitely important. “A masquerade could definitely be fun.” True Clara had an unfair advantage in that she could find anything to wear thanks to the TARDIS. But she could also offer it up for friends as well if they needed it.
“All right, let’s get to planning,” Jim decided, pulling out his phone. This was going to be exciting!
