Yang had decided to take the Relic to the magic guild, though she wanted to talk to them first before handing it over. She wanted to get a feel for the guild, and if it could be trusted - and if she and Qrow could be guaranteed access to it should they need it. Well, she had a list of people, but still.
She also carried a bag of cookies to, uh, smooth the transaction, sort of.
With the way that the wards were set up, Freya had needed to be outside and waiting when Yang showed up. Oh, it had taken her about a minute to put two and two together on who she was about to meet but given the fact this was about housing a dream item which had the potential of being a risk? Well, she could put aside those particular feelings.
She had five thousand other things going on, another ‘trip’ (meaning magical transportation and off the records) overseas to look into war crimes which were always exhausting now that she could literally feel the residual energy from violent deaths, there was setting up the underground railroad for domestic abuse survivors as well as branching it out internationally thanks to the change by the so called Justice Department about abuse not being reason to receive asylum (was anything at this point?), children ripped from their families which had her alternating to and from Texas on top of her off the record trips overseas and then just her normal work.
But this was another one of her responsibilities and Freya didn’t shirk her responsibilities, so she put all of that aside for the time being as she noticed the younger woman showing up to the coordinates she’d been given.
“You must be Yang. Hello, I’m Freya.”
It hadn’t even clicked to Yang who Freya was, or rather who Freya was to her ex-girlfriend and she might have been a little wary and guilty if she had. But she was too distracted by, well, everything, to really have that click for her.
If Freya asked Yang would volunteer to help her, especially when it came to helping kids. Though Freya probably wouldn’t ask and Yang wouldn’t know enough to offer.
“Hey there.” She held up the bag of Ruby-Certified-Baked-Cookies and shifted the bag on her shoulder, “Cookie?”
If there was something Freya was good at, it was compartmentalizing. This wasn’t the time for being wary or the like, not for interpersonal reasons. The Relic and whatever it might be? Fine, that was something that needed to be worried about and why Yang was here in the first place. Everything with Evie didn’t matter in this and Freya wouldn’t let it have any influence on how this went. Her concern right now was the Relic and getting it safely hidden.
Freya wouldn’t ask. Most of it was work related with the UN and while there would always be volunteer opportunities at Pimpernel Outreach, the work that she and Percy were setting up required a smaller network of people they already knew.
Or Yang could offer her a cookie and all Freya could do was blink and quirk a brow.
“Uh, no thanks, I’m good. Maybe later. This way.” With a flick of her wrist, she made it so that Yang would be able to cross the boundary into the Guild.
“Okay.” Something about Freya’s name was familiar to Yang and then she placed it. Clearing her throat, she stepped into the guild, and looked around for some kind of reception desk to leave the cookies. Maybe Freya didn’t want some, but surely someone would.
She swore that she could feel something prick at the back of her neck, like some kind of energy. “This place feels weird.”
The Guild wasn’t like an office building where there was a reception desk or waiting area. Instead there were different types of room for practicing different types of magic, as well as a library full of a variety of books for those who were inclined to were able to study.
As Yang mentioned the energy, Freya gave a slight nod.
“There are a number of wards and barriers in place to keep this location and anything inside safe. Different magical energies.”
They all managed to work in harmony though that had been part of Freya’s aim, to find a way to interlock them to create a stronger defense and to work in tandem with one another.
“So like, to avoid two objects interacting, right? I can imagine some things are fundamentally incompatible and if the energies came into contact with each other, it would be really bad.” She shifted her bag, “And if.. Someone or someone close to them needed access to their magic item?”
Freya gave a nod, “That is one of the things the wards protect against, yes.” Because it was true, there were plenty of objects that existed at the Guild where interaction could be dangerous, “Also to keep them from people who would use them to bring about danger, such as the end of the world.” Because this was Orange County. Of course that happened because someone decided to hide a thing under their bed and then it was stolen. As for the question Yang ask.
“There are spells that can be done that make it so only certain people are even able to see and locate the item so that they could use them if absolutely necessary.”
“Okay. Cuz that was a big concern of mine. Right now there’s.. No one who wants it who’s a danger to have it, but it doesn’t mean that won’t change. Or that we might not needed to save the world or something.” The county kind of worked that way.
But Qrow, herself, Ruby. Maybe the rest of the team, maybe her dad. But definitely, definitely Qrow.
Freya well understood the way Orange County could be and the risk of people showing up who could be a serious threat. Or the need for things to be done to stop the world from ending. Been there, done that, got yelled at by her brother for risking her life for it when they could have had someone else do it.
“Which makes sense and is often the main concern. It’s why there are a number of spells that I can do to protect it, as well as allow only a certain number of people access to it depending on how specific you want it to be.”
“I have a list,” Yang assured her. “I might need to add to it eventually, after I talk to my Uncle about it, but for now I want to keep it in the family.”
Well, Raven didn’t count as family, so just her, Ruby, Qrow and Tai to start. “Is that okay?”
Given Freya didn’t know the circumstances of the family given Raven… it did seem the bloodline spell would be the easiest.
“Okay. Well there’s a spell that works where only those who are related to you by blood will be able to see or access the spell. Or were you thinking more individualized?”
Because Freya might not know the specifics, but given the Mikaelson family, she also understood that you might not want everyone related to you able to have access to something.
“There are a couple of people who aren’t related that we might need to add, but I think we can cross that bridge if we come to it. Besides,” Yang flashed a bright smile. “Not many people can move faster than my sister or Uncle. Either of them could get here way before me. But my mom is kind of a bitch. She isn’t around to dream so maybe that would be okay...”
Freya just quirked a brow at the trailing off sentence.
“Are you sure about that or would you prefer a more individualized spell? I’m fine with either. The individualized one might be better if you’re wanting to add other people later. Plus this is Orange County. We never know who might show up.”
Just because Dahlia was dead and she doubted her parents would ever show up on the network didn’t mean Freya would be surprised if they showed up. Or the fucking De Martel siblings or Lucien. They could all go and die for all she cared.
“... you know, lets go with that,” Yang decided. “In our Dreams, my mother is a bandit, and kind of a really bad person. She’s the last person we’d want to have this thing. She’s like some kind of crime lord or something here.”
Freya gave a slight nod at the information she was given. Mothers were….complicated. Well no, Freya couldn’t stand Esther. Here or the Dreams, though her mother was dead in the Dreams.
“Alright. I’ll need a strand of hair from each person for the spell.” But it wasn’t like it should be difficult to come by. Hair brushes were a thing. But for something to completely individualized? It was necessary.
Yang made a face, “I hate getting my hair cut. It’s one of my rage buttons.” Which was stupid, she knew. “I’ve been considering one though. Just for a… change.”
Sometimes she felt like her hair was kind of part of her emotional state. And maybe cutting it would be like cutting out past-her.
“I’ll stop by with some hair, but here.” She reached up, braced herself, and yanked out a strand.
That was a lot of oversharing but okay. If Yang wanted to talk about getting a haircut and how it went against her nature because it was a rage button. Though she did know that hair could be quite important to people and part of their identity.
Or… Yang could just pull out a strand of hair.
“...you could have just brought me a strand from a hair brush when you brought the others. But thanks.”
Taking the strand of hair, Freya pulled a baggy out of her back pocket (you never knew when you might need one) and placed it inside to preserve it until she could do the spell.
“I’m here, I might as well.” She gave Freya a sheepish smile. “Thank you, you know. For doing this. For even being here. Musta been chaos before the guild.”
Shrugging some, Freya nodded. “Fair enough.” As for the thanks? “Yeah, of course.” She had been hesitant to join the Guild at first being more solitary in her work but she could at least acknowledge it was a good thing for when things went crazy and for housing artifacts such as the relic Yang had brought. She might not know the specifics of it, but she could feel the magic on it, an ancient magic. “I don’t know what it was like before the Magic Guild was in place, but I can imagine.”
Yang pulled it out of her pack and held it up, examining it closely. “Let’s get this thing locked away. Something tells me that omnipotent knowledge can be really, really abused.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Having ended up where the more dangerous objects were kept, and thus stronger spells in place, Freya murmured a spell that unlocked an empty ‘safe’ that was part of a hidden wall that they would be able to place the relic in and be hidden away. After all. Omnipotent knowledge could indeed be abused and easily.
