With everything that had happened between him and Klaus, namely the huge murder spree they’d committed all over the OC, Tyler had been doing his best to avoid Klaus and anyone who happened to share his last name. He’d tried very, very hard to avoid getting Elijah those shoes of his, not because he had anything against buying Elijah new shoes, but because he just didn’t want to deal with it.
He wasn’t entirely sure how he’d ended up outside of a Testoni store, but once he had, the temptation to go in and compel himself a pair of shoes was too much to resist, and, once they were in hand, he went to the address that Klaus had given him and knocked on the door.

It took a few minutes for Elijah to answer the door, head tilting slightly at the sight of Tyler Lockwood on his doorstep. Lips pursed a moment as he tried to settle on how to greet the boy. Their last meeting hadn’t exactly been a resounding success, after all. Tyler was not quite as cultured as Elijah expected.
“Well this is certainly unexpected.” Perhaps candor was the right way to go. “And to what do I owe the honor?”

“I brought you shoes,” Tyler said, holding up the bag to bring Elijah’s attention to it. “Klaus told me your other ones got ruined after the last time we ran into one another.” And then had told Tyler to buy him new ones, which Tyler had been powerless to deny, but he didn’t need Elijah to know about the sire bond before he dreamed about it.

Elijah looked over him appraisingly for a moment. “Thank you.” And he supposed he owed some thanks to Niklaus, as well. “The gesture is very much appreciated. Though I am a bit surprised that you noticed the brand.” Not many people would have, let alone clueless young men like Tyler.
“May I offer you something for your trouble?” He didn’t necessarily mean money but then again a tip wouldn’t be anything out oft he ordinary either.

“Klaus told me,” Tyler said. Tyler would have been totally content buying Reebok. But then, the idea of Elijah walking around town in a pair of Reebok tennis shoes would have made him laugh.
Tyler hesitated at Elijah’s question. He was tempted to say yes, though he didn’t know what he’d ask for. The shoes hadn’t cost him any actual money, after all. But then he tried to picture what Klaus would say if he knew that Tyler had taken some kind of compensation for the shoes, and he knew that his sire wouldn’t approve. “I’m okay,” he said after a moment. The last thing he needed was to make Klaus angry.

Lips twitched slightly at the admission. “I shall have to thank him, as well. I hadn’t realized he was so observant.” After all Niklaus didn’t place the same care and consideration into clothing as Elijah did.
Still his head cocked to one side at Tyler’s response. He could guess why Tyler might decline. Even if he didn’t approve, it really wasn’t his place to subvert his brother’s rule, as it were. Not too overtly.
“You’re certain?”

“You know how he is about family,” Tyler said, a little grudgingly. For all his faults, the attention Klaus paid to his family was kind of cool. Though it probably wasn’t hard when he paid no attention to anyone else around him.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Tyler said. He almost added ‘just make sure not to kill any of my friends,’ but he knew that was probably a bad idea. He didn’t know how far Elijah had dreamed yet, and didn’t really want to rush that along.
**
“How we all are about family.” The entire clan. Family first, always and forever. But he took Tyler’s point. Niklaus cared about his family more than absolutely anyone else and even then he was prone to hurtful outbursts.
“Then I should let you get back to whatever errand my brother has devised for you today, I suppose. Thank you, again, Tyler.” Even if it had been at Niklaus’s behest.
