Sunlight filtered through the large, green leaves above him, and the cry of a bird he didn’t recognize rang in his ear. For a moment, he was completely discombobulated. He’d been up late at his kitchen table, working, but this definitely wasn’t his kitchen. It only took him a moment to recognize where he was though. The trees, the heat, and the giant fucking rodent that was staring at him from the branches above dispelled any doubts that he might have had.
He scowled to himself and stood up. He must have fallen asleep at the table, and was one again trapped in that damn dream that he’d been stuck in with D once. He pinched himself once, hard, and once he finished cursing at the pain he had to admit that it didn’t seem like he’d be waking up any time soon.
All that was left, he guessed, was to find D and give him a piece of his mind. “D!” he bellowed, trying to maneuver through the thick underbrush. “D! Answer me! I swear to God, if you’re ignoring me so you can play with another fucking badger I’m going to kick your ass!”
Veronica woke up in a strange place. Or rather she was dreaming in a strange place? Whatever the fuck it was it wasn’t Neptune. It had been a long time since Veronica had any new dreams. But this didn’t even feel like her dreams. Not even a new set of them. No, this was something different.
And what the hell was with this heat and these huge ass rodents? The blonde was not a fan. But there was nothing she could do other than try and find her way out. So she began walking, where she was going she had no idea. But she had to do something.
That was when she heard a familiar voice. Leon’s voice. Only he was calling for D. Seriously? Did that guy think of anyone else” “Uh actually,” Veronica said walking towards her friend’s voice. “It’s V. And I make it a habit to avoid badgers.”
Leon froze in his tracks and stared at Veronica, clearly surprised to see her there. She shouldn’t be here. She wasn’t part of his dreams. In fact, his dreamself didn’t even know who she was. “What are you doing here?” he asked after a moment.
Veronica gave him a ‘what the fuck’ look. “Trying to figure out how to get the hell out of here,” she replied. Duh completely implied. “I have no fucking clue how I got here.” Maybe Leon would know. Though she doubted it. “What are you doing here? Other than looking for D. Seriously what is it with you and this guy?”
“Normally when I dream of blondes, they’re cuter and wearing skimpier clothes,” Leon grumbled to himself, rubbing the side of his head. “But last time I had this dream, D was here. I don’t know why the hell you’re here this time.”
Veronica rolled his eyes at Leon’s comment. At least if she was somehow in Leon’s dream she was in her own clothing and not some skimpy outfit. “You’ve had this dream before?” Yes she knew he just said that but she needed to clarify. Veronica was usually quick on the uptake but this was just too crazy for her. Hell it was too crazy for the OC in general. She had never heard of a person being in someone else’s dreams unless they shared the same dream world. Like she did with Logan. But she definitely didn’t share a world with Leon. “How the fuck did I get in your dream?”
“Well, D was here. And it was a dream within a Dream, but yeah. For the most part, I’ve had it before,” Leon admitted.
It had ended with D asking Leon what he’d do if he were the last human on Earth, and then Leon actually being the last human on Earth, which had been a little unnerving. And then he’d woken up to discover that when he’d fired his weapon at a sabertooth tiger that had been about to tear through D, he’d actually destroyed a museum exhibit. Quickly, he checked himself for his handgun, and was more than a little relieved that he didn’t have it on him. He hadn’t fallen asleep in an empty museum after hours this time. He’d fallen asleep in his kitchen, and if he accidentally shot Chris or Alex in his sleep, he’d never forgive himself.
“And fuck if I know why you’re here. I’m not some… Dreamologist. Maybe my subconscious is trying to tell me something. Like there’s worse things than being stuck in some prehistoric dream with D. Or that I’ve seen you recently or something. It’s not like I’ve never dreamed of my friends before.”
So somehow she had ended up in Leon’s dreamworld. Well okay then. Maybe this was a new thing. Popping into your friends dreamworlds. Or rather dreams within their dreamworlds? Whatever the fuck it was Veronica was not a fan. Why couldn’t she be in like Clara’s dream? Time traveling sounded way more fun than whatever the hell this was.
“Well I don’t exactly want to be in some prehistoric dream with you either,” Veronica shot back. “But since you’ve done this before. How the hell do we get out of here?”
“We wake up,” Leon said, shrugging. How else did you get out of a dream, other than waking up? “Might be a few hours though. Might as well get used to it. Don’t piss off any sabertooth tigers.” Leon couldn’t exactly protect either one of them from a tiger without his handgun, though he would have hesitated it use it anyway. “Come on, let’s go find D. I’ve got a bone to pick with him.”
She was hoping for an answer they had some control over. Like find the hidden door or some shit. They couldn’t exactly wake themselves up. Veronica let out an annoyed sigh. “Looks like we’re stuck together for awhile.” Hopefully they wouldn’t run into any tigers. “Oh. I get to meet the D?” Okay maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. She would at least get to see the guy Leon obsessed over.
“Don’t sound so excited,” Leon grumbled. “It’s not like I'm stoked to be hanging out with woolly mammoths for the next couple of hours.” No, he had murders to solve. He’d He’d left crime scene photos out too. He hoped that Chris wouldn't wake up and see them before Leon got up again.
“Hopefully. I know he’s here,” Leon grumbled. Not that he had any concrete evidence, but he was sure of it. As sure as he was about the new, angry, red scar on his forearm from when he’d been attacked on Easter. “First those fucking rabbits, and now this? When I find him I'm going to lock him up so fucking fast he won't know what hit him.”
“Better than hanging out with you,” Veronica quipped. Although it probably wasn’t the best idea to be teasing Leon when he knew about this world and Veronica had no idea. Other than D his dreams also seemed to involve a lot of crazy ass animals. Which Veronica would prefer not to deal with on her own.
“Before you lock him up, make sure he can get me the hell out of here.” Although Veronica wasn’t sure D would know either. It seemed more likely than Leon knowing at least.
Leon didn't respond; he just shot Veronica a withering glare. Man, how was Veronica just as annoying in his dreams as she was in real life?
“Obviously I'll wait until we’re awake. Got the feeling there aren't any prisons here. You hungry?” He wasn't starved yet, but he could do for some food and he just spotted one of the fruit trees he’d seen the last time he was here. He didn't know how common the trees with the spiky melons were here, but it wouldn't hurt to pick a few for the road. Who knew how long they'd be there? Without waiting for an answer, he began to scale the tree, climbing it with ease until he was in the upper branches. “These things look like spiky turds, but they're actually pretty tasty,” he said, pulling a few off the branches and dropping them down to Veronica.
“Uh, Leon,” Veronica began. She was about to ask how exactly he could arrest D when he was awake if D only existed in the dreams. However before she could Leon was up in a tree. What. The. Hell? since when did Leon know how to scale a tree like that?
She wrinkled her nose when he tossed her the brown fruit. That didn’t look at all appetizing. In fact it looked quite the opposite. “I think I’ll-” she was about to say ‘pass’ but then her stomach growled. Damn her hunger! “Alright. I guess I’ll try one.”
Leon grinned down at Veronica from his perch in the tree and took a bite of the fruit he himself had grabbed. It was no burger, but for some unnamed prehistoric fruit, it really wasn’t that bad. A couple of bites and he’d devoured the food, then tucked his shirt into his jeans, shoved a few more into his shirt, and shimmied down the tree. He jumped down the last few feet. That had definitely gone better than when the branch had fallen out from under him and he’d ended up in the river in his last dream.
Veronica reluctantly took a few bites. Okay. It wasn’t horrible. And she was hungry. Before she knew it she had devoured the entire fruit. “Since when do you know how to do that?” Veronica asked referring to how he climbed up and dismounted the tree.
“What, climb a tree?” Leon asked, raising an eyebrow. “Since I was a kid, I guess.” He’d always been good at it as a kid. As an adult, he tended to climb less trees, but he did spend a lot of time climbing over walls and hopping fences, so he wasn’t as out of practice as he might have been.
“The trees I remember you climbing had a bit more branches,” Veronica commented. As in he wasn’t just shimmying up the trunk. But whatever. “Alright. Let’s go find you D.” And yes she realized how wrong that sounded.
