Klaus had neglected the gallery for the past few days. Too busy keeping an eye on his sister. After everything that happened he was not about to let Freya out of his sight. But as time went on Klaus calmed a bit and got back to his life. Of course he had employees, and there was always Tyler to help take care of things. But Klaus needed to do a good looking over of everything himself.
He was in the back office going over some of the past few sales when he heard someone enter. With his vampire hearing he was able to recognize it was Elijah right away. “Elijah,” Klaus said as he exited the office into the actual gallery. “What brings you by?” he bit his tongue holding back from asking ’Come to check up on your investment?’ He knew that wasn’t true. Still Klaus couldn’t help his paranoia.
**
Elijah’s gaze slid from the painting he was admiring to his brother across the way. Perhaps Elijah was reading too much into the tone or perhaps he just had too much history with his brother to believe that he was less than thrilled to see him there.
“I can’t stop by to visit?” Though they both knew Elijah was hardly one to just stop by. A shrug of his shoulder. “I thought perhaps I might tempt you with lunch.” Klaus had been keeping an eye on Freya, Elijah was there to watch over Klaus.
**
“Of course,” Niklaus replied. “You’re free to stop by whenever you please.” It was his investment after all. But again Klaus refrained from saying that. He knew that wasn’t Elijah’s intention. When Klaus had first returned to Orange County he had been broke. Without Elijah’s help he might not have been able to open up a new gallery. Well at least not until the dreams turned him into the most powerful being on the planet.
“I supposed I could take some time for a lunch break. What are you in the mood for?” Hopefully it would be a place that served alcohol.
**
Turning to face his brother, one hand in his suit pocket, Elijah shrugged nonchalantly. “I find myself craving sushi,” he answered. “But if you feel strongly, or you have a time constraint, I could be persuaded to have something else.”
He would be concerned about the food, obviously, and would want only the highest caliber, but otherwise his main goal in going to the gallery that day was to ensure his brother’s well being. And to that end, he certainly could let Niklaus choose lunch.
**
“I could go for some sushi,” Klaus replied. Particularly the sake. He motioned one of his employees over letting him know that he would be back in a few hours. Until Klaus returned his employee was in charge.
Exiting the gallery he climbed into his car letting his brother take the passenger seat. Before long they were at the restaurant. “So,” Klaus said as he got out of the car. “What brought on this impromptu lunch? Is everything alright?”
**
“Everything is fine, Niklaus,” Elijah assured him, exiting the car and falling into step beside his brother as they moved into the Japanese restaurant. Whether because of who Elijah was or because of how he acted, the two were seated almost immediately, Elijah perusing the menu as he continued.
“I merely wanted to ensure that you were well. With all of the attention focused on Freya so recently, I needed to be sure no other of my siblings were battling anything serious, health concern or otherwise.”
**
“I’m fine,” Klaus replied glancing over the menu himself. “I assure you there is nothing that can hurt me.” Healthwise at least. The hybrid was practically unkillable. But Elijah didn’t know that. As far as Klaus knew his brother hadn’t even had dreams. Though that didn’t mean much. He wasn’t always included it the goings on of his family. However, as much as Klaus liked to pretend he was emotionless. There were still things that could hurt him. His ‘parents’ distaste for him to be exact. Which was precisely why he hadn’t spoken to either of them since his return.
“It’s Freya you should worry about.” While Klaus would continue to worry about her, Elijah, and Rebekah. Hell even Kol and Finn though at least they were also immortal,
**
“Believe me, Brother, I do.” He most certainly worried about Freya, not only because of her bout with pneumonia but also because of her insistence on traveling to the most dangerous places in the world in the line of duty. He understood why she did it. But just because he understood didn’t mean he had to like it.
“But I worry about all of my siblings. Even those who don’t believe they need to be worried over. You and Freya both are included in that latter group.” The words were said lightly enough, though.
**
Ah, Elijah. The pseudo-father figure. He did a much better job than Mikael at least. Though that wasn’t a high bar considering the man had beaten Klaus for his entire life. It was somewhat of relief knowing he didn’t share the same blood as that vile man, unlike his siblings.
“The difference between our dear sister and myself is that it’s actually true when it comes to me.” Perhaps one day both Elijah and Rebekah would also become immortal. But, Freya, she would always be human. A witch, yes, but still human.
**
Elijah merely glanced over his menu at that remark. He didn’t truly believe that Klaus didn’t need to be worried over. He’d borne quite a bit of the brunt of their parents’ venom through the years, through no fault of his own. All of the siblings were damaged in one way or another, not one of them really truly a well-adjusted adult. Some just managed to hide it better than others.
“Well you must forgive me at any rate.” He couldn’t help but worry about his siblings, even Niklaus with all his bravado. “Humor me.”
**
There was no point in arguing. Not when he couldn’t tell Elijah the full truth. So for now he would allow Elijah’s worrying. No matter how unnecessary it was. And to be honest there was a part of him that appreciated it. Made him feel like he was cared about. A feeling he severely lacked while growing up.
“Alright,” Klaus said. “Just this once.”
**
A grin flashed across Elijah’s features at that. “Thank you, Brother.” How kind of him to allow him to worry.
“Now, how have you been passing your time? Besides worrying over Freya, of course.”
**
That was a question he couldn’t fully answer. It wasn’t like he could tell his brother he’d be off feeding on people and compelling them to forget, hell sometimes he even killed him for the hell of it. It wasn’t like the police could do anything about it. Klaus was too powerful to be kept in your average jail.
“Working,” he said instead. “Painting when I get the chance.” Which wasn’t a lie. It just wasn’t the whole truth. “And yourself?”
**
Elijah studied his brother for a moment but he couldn’t detect any signs that his brother was being less than honest. Work and painting. How...unexciting.
“Working,” Elijah answered. “And ensuring that my siblings stay in good health. I’m glad you’ve been doing well, Niklaus.”
**
It wasn’t like Elijah’s life sounded all that thrilling either. But then who knew. There could be stuff Elijah was keeping from him. Just as Klaus was keeping things from Elijah.
“You know, not all of your siblings need looking after.” Yes he had allowed the worry. But he did need to remind his brother that he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself. He had left the family when he was barely 18. Not even talking to his siblings for a year after all. He built a life for himself out of nothing. If you ignored the business partner turning on him part.
**
“I don’t mean to imply that you are incompetent, Brother. Indeed, far from it. But it’s a habit that I cannot shake.” Being the older brother. It came with the territory. “Just as Freya must have nine thousand projects going on at once, and you must paint. It is who I am, for better or worse and I doubt you would have much success in changing me now.” That, at least, was said with a teasing glance to Niklaus.
“And I do hope my company is at least pleasant.”
**
He supposed he would have to give Elijah that. Each of the siblings had their thing. Even in the dreams. “I suppose there could be worst company.”
**
Elijah half laughed at that, glancing at his brother with amusement clearly visible in his eyes. “I’ll take that as a compliment, Niklaus. Thank you.”
