Things were a little crazy outside. Pyrrha didn’t know where Jaune or her team was, or any of her friends, but she ducked into a building to escape more of those rabbits. She’d rather deal with the peeps.
Judging from the soft ‘peeping’ sounds that greeted her, she might have gotten her wish. She couldn’t hear anyone else, so called out, “Hello? Is anyone here?”
Blake was not enjoying this turn of events. And of course she hadn’t brought Gambol Shroud with her either. Still, she was trying to corral the peeps without killing them. Because the screaming was not something she liked to hear. She was currently perched on top of a bookcase, trying to figure out the next course of action to getting the peeps trapped where they couldn’t get at her.
Her cat ears, hidden beneath her bow, twitched when she heard someone come in. She recognized the voice and looked towards the door.
“Pyrrha?” She asked. “Be careful, there’s some peeps in here. I’m trying to corral them as best as I can.”
“Blake?” Pyrrha’s expression brightened when she saw her. She hadn’t spent nearly enough time with anyone from her dreams, outside of her team. She made a mental note to see if Ruby wanted to get lunch. Once...the current crazy was over, anyway. “Hello!”
Her eyes fell to the peeps. “Maybe I can herd them towards you?”
“That would actually help. I constructed a trap, so if you herd them this way we can probably trap them far more easily.” Blake said. Her trap? A construction of heavy books so the peeps couldn’t easily knock them down.
Never one to say anything that wasn’t nice, Pyrrha commented, “Nice trap!” She didn’t have her weapon, but she did grab a broom and started chasing peeps in the right direction. This was her life now. “I hope Jaune is okay, with those rabbits out there.”
Blake watched Pyrrha from her perch, but she was ready to leap down and close the “door” on the trap once the peeps were in place. “At least they’re not dogs,” she commented. “But yeah, those rabbits are frightening.” Then once Pyrrha got the peeps into the trap, Blake leapt down and slammed the door shut, so to speak. “Gotcha!” She proclaimed proudly.
“Thanks for the help, Pyrrha.”
“I’ll never look at peeps the same way,” Pyrrha admitted. Or bunnies. She leaned on the broom. “Do you work here?”
“Neither will I.” Blake had never eaten peeps before, but she definitely never would after this. Looking at Pyrrha, she nodded. “Yes, I do. It’s actually nice here when invasions of any sort are not happening.”
“I should check it out. I could use a few books to read when on the bus, or waiting for the practice field to open up.”
She noticed Blake had her bow, which was cute. Pyrrha had always wished she could pull off a bow. “I’ve been trying to recover in time for the next Olympics.”
“There’s a wide range of topics, so hopefully there’s something that could catch your interest.” Blake said with a little smile. “How is your recovery going?”
“Great! I think the dreams have helped a little. My leg doesn’t bother me any more, not like it used to. I guess how fit I am bled over, and I thought I was pretty fit to begin with.” She wasn’t the kind of person to flex for someone, but she did stand there like a paragon of athletic virtue.
“I’m glad to hear that.” Blake’s smile widened a little. “And believe me, I understand about dream fitness. I definitely didn’t have any muscle before I started, but I do now.” It was all lean muscle, but Blake at least looked healthy now. Upon arriving in Orange County, she’d been a complete stick. She’d never been athletic, and everything with her ex had taken a toll.
Pyrrha patted her own stomach, “I have abs on my abs now.” Too bad Jaune didn’t seem to notice. Or if he did it was never when or how she wanted him to. They’d been on… shakey ground ever since the Valentine’s thing.
“All right, since I’m here, what do you recommend I read first?”
Blake laughed a bit. “That’s definitely something, I’m sure.” Though at her question, Blake glanced at the bookshelf to see what section they were currently standing in. “That depends. Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction? I wouldn’t want to recommend anything you wouldn’t be interested in reading.”
“Anything historical?” Pyrrha asked. “Fiction or non-fiction, I’m not too picky. There’s good options for both, I’m sure!”
“Yes definitely!” Blake led Pyrrha over to the history section. “There’s some good biographies and such regarding Greece and that area of the world. I think we even have a book about the history and origins of the Olympics, if that interest you at all. For historical fiction, there’s a couple books about Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, and other famous figures like that. If any of that catches your interest?”
Eagerly, Pyrrha followed Blake to the History section. She'd never really spent much time looking into the history of her profession or sports, but now was a good time to start. "I'll take the Olympics one, and the one on Cleopatra. Do you have anything on martial arts? Weapons, that sort of thing."
Blake grabbed out those two books, then she nodded a bit. “Yes, we do.” She moved off, eyes scanning the spines of the books on the shelves. She grabbed one on martial arts. “By weapons I am going to assume that you mean swords and the like.” Just given the weapons of their dreams and the weapons Pyrrha favored.
Pyrrha nodded, eyes lit up with interest. “Yes. I … suppose I should do research, if I’m going to actually train with them. Especially for when I spar with Ruby.”
Which she really needed to do again. Ruby was a fun opponent and a good teacher. It felt strange being the less experienced one. Ruby had always been the raw talent needing experience. There were times Pyrrha felt like she herself was stagnating.
“I completely understand. It took me a while to get the hang of my weapon here.” It had been very difficult for her to master the various configurations that Gambol Shroud had. The sword and the guns were the easy part. It was when she flung it around like a whip where she got in trouble.
Blake pulled a book about iron age weapons and how to fight with them. “Alright, I think this may be enough for starters?” There were a few books in Blake’s arms now, and she didn’t know how fast Pyrrha was at reading.
Pyrrha looked down at the armful and laughed. "Yeah I think that's good enough for starters. You know, you should look into working for the library. I think you'd do really well there, helping people find what they needed."
“Maybe I would be good at it, but I prefer it here. It’s quieter. I...don’t do well around lots of people.” Blake said. She didn’t want to go into detail, Pyrrha didn’t need that kind of crap dumped on her right now. She carried the books over to the counter and set them down.
“Okay.” Pyrrha nodded, following Blake to the counter and reaching for her wallet. “Ring me up. I might.. Hang around a little bit, if no one tries to call me for help.”
She didn’t want to go back out there. She wasn’t a hero. Not yet, anyway.
“Of course, I don’t mind.” Blake rang the books up, grabbed a bag and put them in it. At least Pyrrha was good company to have, especially when Orange County was being Orange County.
