Merlin had offered to help Audrey decorate the bakery in preparation for the Easter celebrations the bakery would be doing. Ben and Bea were set up playing in a corner, they were really good kids the majority of the time.
“So bunting all around?” he checked with her, the bunting in question floating in front of him before he directed it where Audrey wanted it.
“Yes, please!” Audrey gave him a smile, motioning with a wave of her hand. “All along the counter, and then along the wall.” She was busy conjuring giant Easter Eggs to place about the room, and Easter Grass that was biodegradable. “I love these colors. All the pastels. I think it’s so cheerful.”
“It is. I’ve always liked the Easter colours, it’s not as in your face as a lot of other holidays” Merlin commented as he worked the bunting into place around the bakery, “Are we doing Izzy’s one too?” he asked, knowing that Audrey tended to let Izzy make the decisions regarding the second bakery location, though Audrey always had final say.
“Absolutely. Sometimes the brightness and explosions of July 4th get to me. And Halloween and Christmas can just be so flashy. I think Easter has a really calm but positive feel to it.” Audrey moved around the register with her wand, taking the opportunity to do a little cleaning along the way--a couple of cleaning charms worked themselves along the floor, scrubbing it until it sparkled.
“Definitely” Merlin agreed, Audrey hadn’t answered his question about the other bakery so he just left it. No doubt if it needed doing she’d tell him at some point. He continued moving decorations into place as Audrey cleaned. He had to admit the little bunnies and things on the decorations were very cute. He was looking forward to the shaped cookies this year. Thought they would have to ration them at home, Ben would eat them all otherwise.
Poor Audrey had so many things going on through her head that she’d simply missed his question. Then again, Merlin was probably used to that by now. Sometimes Audrey was so involved with the big picture stuff, she missed out on the details. Which sometimes left questions unanswered. She didn’t do it on purpose, and she hoped she made up for it with enthusiasm and positivity.
“We haven’t talked much about what the Easter Bunny might bring for Bea and Ben,” Audrey added, giving him a smile as she continued cleaning with a flick of her wand. Bleached white rags started to scrub down the tabletops of their own accord.
Merlin was definitely used to it by now, he simply let it go over his head. He knew she wasn’t purposefully ignoring him though he did sometimes decide to tease her about it.
“Let’s try and reign in the chocolate, last year got a little too much” their kids had received so much that they’d rationed it for a good couple of months afterwards. “Maybe we could pick out spring themed books or toys for them or something?” he suggested, others might buy them chocolate but they could at least minimise it.
Audrey laughed. “I’m sure if we let the Easter Bunny know that we’ve already got plenty of sweets, he’ll focus on toys and books instead. Maybe even some cute, springtime clothes. Ben is outgrowing all the things we put him in.” Their kids were getting so big, it was hard to believe.
“That is a very good idea. Kid is growing like a weed” Merlin grinned, “He’d going to end up being taller than us both eventually, I bet you” It was crazy though, Merlin sometimes looked at old pictures of them both and couldn’t believe how quickly they were both growing.
“I wouldn't be surprised.” Audrey said. Didn’t they say something about how to tell how tall a child was going to be? There was some calculation, but Audrey wasn’t sure she believed it completely. “But let’s not push it. I like that he’s still a kid. Let’s not rush him.” Audrey finished the decorations she was working on and came to join him in the lobby. “What do you think? Just about finished?”
“No rushing, I am happy to let him stay a kid for a very long time” Merlin assured her, he didn’t want to feel like an old dad anytime soon. “I think so” Merlin said standing back and looking around, “It looks good. Very Easter-y” he grinned at her.
“Good.” Audrey moved over to her husband and wrapped arms around his waist, cuddling close. “I’m excited for spring. It always feels like it brings new things.” She gave him a smile, then leaned her head against his shoulder. “Thanks for helping me decorate.”
Merlin wrapped his arms around her as he smiled, “Spring does have a good feeling about it” he agreed, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, “Anytime. You know that” he gave her a squeeze as they stood looking at the decorated bakery. It really did look brilliant.
