Izzy, while she enjoyed going out sometimes, rather preferred being in on days like Valentine’s. Every place they could go would be crowded and full and she wanted to have Simon to herself especially since she planned to ask him to move in. The Institute was lonely since everybody had left and it was far too much space for her. Plus she couldn’t deny the idea of going to bed and waking up with Simon everyday was a lovely one.
She’d made dinner and dessert and was keeping an eye on everything in the kitchen until he arrived. The table was set and she had to admit she was proud of how cosy and warm it looked.
Simon always had trouble thinking of romantic things to do, so he was glad that Izzy had offered to cook dinner at the Institute. That way all Simon had to worry about was flowers and candy. Not only had he had roses delivered to the bakery earlier in the day while Izzy had been working, but he also had another flower arrangement of orchids delivered to the Institute, because if anyone deserved more than one flower delivery, it was Isabelle Lightwood.
Aside from flowers, Simon was bringing chocolates and a card and was just happy to spend the night alone with Isabelle now that Jace was no longer living at the Institute. Sure, Simon didn’t really like the idea of his girlfriend living in that big building by herself, but considering she was a Shadowhunter and all, he wasn’t too worried.
Reaching the Institute, he headed up to the door and rang the elaborate doorbell.
Izzy ran to the door the moment it rang, the flowers from Simon had been placed in the dining room and looked absolutely beautiful. She’d loved both arrangements and had been the envy of the bakery that morning.
Opening the door she smiled brightly and ushered him in, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him as soon as the door was closed, “Happy Valentine’s Day” she said when they parted.
Simon returned Izzy’s smile as she answered the door and he kissed her back as well, “Happy Valentine’s Day,” There were times that Simon still asked himself how he’d gotten so lucky. When they finally parted, Simon held out the chocolates and card, “And just one more surprise.”
“Aww, you are the sweetest. All the girls at work have been jealous all day, they all want to steal you” she told him as she took the presents from him before leading him to the kitchen to get them a couple of drinks before she served up dinner.
“I don’t know about the sweetest, but if you insist then I won’t discourage you from thinking that way,” He grinned at Izzy then followed her into the kitchen. He still couldn’t really stomach much real food, but he found that if he ate small amounts then it wouldn’t make him sick right away so he hadn’t discouraged Izzy from cooking. He knew how much she loved to cook and that it made her happy to do so. “And they can’t have me cause I’m a one woman vampire.”
Izzy only served up a small plate for Simon, she’d told him before not to try and eat if it made him ill but she also knew he really was the sweetest guy she’d ever met and he liked making her happy so he let her cook. She was prepared though, she had room temperature blood in a tall glass for him to have. “Glad to hear it” she said as she placed everything on the pre-set table. “Thank you for agreeing to a quiet evening, I like it when it’s just the two of us” she said pressing another kiss to his lips before they sat.
“A night in is totally fine with me.” It helped take a little pressure off of Simon because it meant that he hadn’t had to pick a restaurant and hope that it was nice enough for Valentine’s Day and he got to spend time with just Izzy instead of having a bunch of other people around them, “Everything looks great. I wish I could eat more of it.” He knew he’d be sick later, but it wouldn’t be too bad.
“I wish you could too” Izzy said, not just because she wanted him to be able to eat what she prepared but also because food was such an immersive experience she didn’t like that he was missing out. “Remember it’s just me so don’t force yourself okay?” she said taking his hand in hers and squeezing, she didn’t like it when he was ill. She always worried it was going to do some sort of permanent damage.
Simon smiled across the table at Izzy, “I won’t. Trust me, I don’t like getting sick. I hated it even before I was a vampire, but now I hate it even more.” Simon had drank enough blood before coming over that he was pretty sure that he’d be able to handle a little food plus Izzy had blood for him, “Maybe someday I’ll be able to train my stomach to tolerate more food.” After all, he could drink coffee again which he couldn’t do at all at first. “So how was the bakery today?”
“Small steps” Izzy said, the coffee was a good thing so they had hope but if it meant Simon suffering she’d rather he didn’t. “It was good, busy obviously but most people were in good moods. Buying sweet things for their loved ones and all, though we did sell a fair few anti-valentines cookies too” she grinned.
“You had anti-Valentine cookies? What did those look like?” While Simon may not have been able to eat the cookies that they had at the bakery, Simon loved seeing the various shapes and designs they did for different holidays and events. “Did you have any requests for like cookie bouquets? I’ve seen pictures of those online a couple times.”
“Basically they were heart shaped cookies with things like ‘I love me’ and Nope’ written on them. We only did a small batch but they sold really well” Izzy said, she’d been surprised actually. “Oh yeah we did one of those as well as a few giant cookies too”
“Aw man, giant cookies?” Simon honestly didn’t think that he’d ever really get used to not regularly eating regular food. Even after a few years of being a vampire, he’d sometimes see something on tv or at the bakery and want to try it then remember that he couldn’t. He really envied the vampires in the OC who could still eat regular food without the risk of getting sick. “If something ever happens and I can really eat again, the first thing I’m eating after a double cheeseburger, is an entire giant cookie.”
“I’ll make one especially for you” Izzy promised, there was still a part of Izzy that hoped they would wake up one day and find that Simon wasn’t a vampire anymore and could eat like everybody else. “So, with it being Valentine’s Day and everything I have a question for you” Izzy said with a slightly hesitant smile, “With Clary and Jace being gone the institute gets a bit...lonely sometimes and well, you stay over a lot anyway and I wondered if maybe you’d like to move in with me?”
Simon wasn’t entirely sure what question Izzy was going to ask and of course the first place his mind went was a marriage proposal, because it’d somehow make sense in their relationship for her to ask him, but the question she did ask prevented him from having a near panic attack; because getting married was not something Simon was ready for.
“Of course I’ll move in.” Since Jace had left, Simon hadn’t liked the idea of Izzy living alone in the Institute. “The guys might miss me, but how can I pass up living with you?”
Marriage was definitely in Izzy’s head but not yet, the time would come for that at some point she was sure but right now living together was the step she thought they were ready for. Smiling brightly Izzy moved to hug Simon, sitting herself in his lap as she did so, “You are the best” she told him, pressing a kiss to his lips, “I love you”
Smiling, Simon kissed her back, one arm wrapping around her waist, “I love you too.” Living with Izzy was going to be interesting since he’d never lived with a girl he wasn’t related to, but he was sure that he wouldn’t mind it at all.
