Removing some leverage.
That was how Stanley had put it, the only surefire fix for this shit. Taking yourself permanently out of the equation by blowing your brains all over the wall of a single wide. Well, Penny of the dreams had found a workaround, one that Penny of the real world didn’t want to take, not yet at least. Vanessa had some, well, issues with that method of treatment, and despite his general behavior and attitude towards life he didn’t actually ever want to upset her. So he was trying to find a workaround, one that didn’t involve pills. So far, the best method he’d found was just to fucking exhaust himself until he couldn’t help but sleep.
Issue with that? His dreams weren’t done with him for the month, and exhaustion naps didn’t prevent them from showing up. There wasn’t anywhere in the world - or, apparently, the multiverse - that he couldn’t go to in the dreams, but he couldn’t outrun shit like this in the present.
Penny had never overdosed before. He’d been careful, at least as careful as a drug user could be - had only bought from people he trusted, had kept track of how much he took, had switched to something different when the high didn’t hit him hard enough, never doubled up or drank while he was using. But things were different, right now. He just wanted relief. He just wanted it to stop. He understood why Stanley had taken the shotgun route now.
When he swam back to consciousness in the real world, in California and not some unnamed place in upstate New York, it hardly seemed real; it had just been a dream, after all.
How stupid was he, to forget that dreams bled over?
He didn’t stay conscious for long, just long enough to think a very succinct oh shit, before he blacked out again. Awareness came in fits and starts - falling to the floor, pain in his left shoulder. Black. Someone yelling and banging on the door. Black. Vanessa opening the door, concerned. Black. Vanessa, next to him on the floor, crying. Black. An ambulance, someone asking him too many questions. Black.
A hospital room. White. Painful white. Penny groaned and tried to raise a hand to cover his eyes, but found that they were chained down to the bed.
“Now don’t fight, Mr. Adiyodi,” a woman in scrubs told him from the foot of his bed. “This is a temporary measure to protect you from your destructive behavior.”
“‘M not - “ Penny tried to say, tongue feeling swollen in his mouth. “Wasn’t me.”
“That’s what they all say, Mr. Adiyodi.” The nurse put down her notepad. “I’m going to give you a dose of something to help you sleep. Your body has been through a lot, you need your rest.”
“Where’s - “ Where’s V? Is she okay? But the nurse just shook her head, pulled out a shot, and inserted it into his IV. Penny tried to break out of his bonds, tried to fight back, but…
Black.
