When Freya had learned that Evie had been shot while she had been in Niger? There had been a panic in her that she couldn’t quite explain. All that Freya knew was that she would do whatever it was she could to keep Evie from being injured and she had the tools to do it. Awkwardness because of the mistletoe kiss? She didn’t care. No, the witch only knew that she could protect Evie and so she would.
Yes, Evie’s job was dangerous. Yes, she was trained as an assassin because of her dreams. That didn’t mean Freya wouldn’t worry and couldn’t do this for her friend.
So she had gone to one of the local magic shops in the area and bought a piece of obsidian as it was one of the strongest protection stones, one that protected from psychic, emotional and physical harm and attacks as well as a healing stone for shock and trauma. She then got some wire and replenished some supplies and it was back home. When questioned on what she was doing, Freya merely stated she was making a protection amulet for Evie and left it at that.
The piece of obsidian was first polished and shaped so that Freya could carve a protection rune into it, the rune of Algiz, an ancient Norse rune as it was a strong rune for protection. She then wrapped the wire in both a decorative state as well as to hold it in place and performed the protection spell she had chosen. After all, there were any number of protection spells one could use, but Freya was particular and determined that no harm come to Evie.
The main thing was giving the amulet she had created to Evie. Which was why she had invited her over. Okay so inviting her to where the infamous kiss had happened? Maybe not the brightest of ideas. But Freya wasn’t thinking about that. It was just easier to give the amulet here, especially as once it was one, she would need to whisper a spell over it just to be safe and doing so in this sanctified space would be best. Now it was the waiting game.
There had definitely been awkwardness after the mistletoe kiss, but Evie had at least maintained the friendship with Freya. The kiss had made her very suddenly aware of feelings she’d otherwise been blind to, and she didn’t know how to handle them. She’d watched as she’d simply stuffed her feelings for Henry inside of herself and focused only on the job at hand in her dreams, but where had that gotten her?
All she did was fight with both Henry and Jacob. And it went deeper than simple sibling squabbling. It was something far worse that was coming between the twins, and it hurt Evie in this life to watch her relationship with her brother get so bad that she couldn’t talk to him like she normally could. So she didn’t exactly want to end up being that bitter and angry at everyone close to her in this life. But even with that, she still couldn’t really bring herself to tell Freya of them. For one, she doubted they were returned. How could Freya feel for her after that whole jumping out of the window thing?
So she’d gone on the mission to Niger to try and distract herself. While Evie had a plan of action, it was nowhere near as refined as her plans tended to be before going into enemy territory because she’d left somewhat more suddenly than she’d intended. It was because of that, and the being distracted by trying to figure out her feelings, that she’d gotten shot. She’d gotten it taken care of by one of her contacts after she completed her mission, then returned home. But she’d tried to keep it a secret from her superiors. But then Freya had noticed how Evie had favored her shoulder at yoga and she couldn’t exactly lie about the injury to her.
Which brought them to this moment. Freya had invited her over and Evie wondered what the reason was. Not that they needed a reason to hang out, but perhaps she was reading too much into it. Evie tended to over-analyze her emotions and anything relating to them. But she showed up and knocked, waiting for Freya to let her in.
While hanging out was all well and good, and really, Freya had been relieved that Evie hadn’t decided to completely shut her out after the window incident, things had remained awkward… but no. Right now there was a definite reason for why she had invited Evie over. Hanging out could be a thing later if the younger woman wanted to. But first it was giving her the amulet.
Having been downstairs so that she’d hear the knock, Freya opened the door with a slight smile.
“Hey, come in.”
Once Evie was inside, the blonde led her up to the attic and moved to the table the amulet was on. Might as well just… get it out of the way first. So picking it up, Freya handed the amulet to Evie.
“I made you this. It’s a protection amulet so that the next time you go overseas, you’ll come back,” to me was the unspoken part of that particular sentence. “You know, unharmed and all.”
Okay so what if she was slightly nervous and that was why she had just...jumped right into why she had invited Evie over?
“Hey,” she responded with a little smile of her own. Somehow, Evie needed to make things Not Awkward between them. She liked Freya, and while she’d mostly come to the conclusion that she liked her as more than a friend, she didn’t want to make those feelings apparent and run the risk of ruining their friendship if Freya didn’t feel the same way. But she’d figure out how to make it less awkward after she followed Freya up to the attic.
The very same attic that she’d leapt out of after kissing Freya. Evie did give a wary look at the infamous window she’d leapt out of before she turned her attention back to Freya. And, well, she hadn’t expected Freya to give her anything, let alone something that would protect her. Taking the amulet in hand, Evie looked at it for some moments, then she looked back at Freya. There was something about the way that she’d said it that made it sound like there was more to it.
An amulet of protection. Meant to keep Evie safe when she’d go on her Assassin missions overseas. The wheels in her head were turning, and they seemed to point to the fact that maybe Freya had similar more-than-friends feelings for her. And helping this was the fact that she’d just dreamt about her and Jacob defeating Starrick, and she’d made up with Henry. She’d worked out her issues with her emotions and decided to just let herself love Henry. And now she had a similar choice to make here.
Evie didn’t have words at the moment, so instead she decided to just let her actions speak. She decided to take the Leap of Faith, though this time not out the window. No, this time she was taking it in regards to Freya. Evie closed the distance between them as her hand closed around the amulet, and she used her free hand to grab the back of Freya’s head and pull her in and she kissed her.
It was a kiss that was different from the mistletoe kiss. This time, Evie was choosing to kiss Freya of her own free will, and because she wanted to. And she let her feelings be felt in it.
Okay. Freya had not been expecting Evie to kiss her in response. It wasn’t why she had given her the amulet. Yes, she knew her feelings were deeper than friendship for the other woman, but all she had wanted to do was find a way to protect her while she did her work. It did also help that Dahlia was gone. Both here and in her Dreams. The scars the woman left would probably always be there but her being gone meant it would be easier to heal now.
Still, Freya could tell that this was a different sort of kiss. It wasn’t the desperate kiss fueled by magic mistletoe that had been like a drug. The one that had left her confused and well… abandoned because Evie had jumped out the window before they could even talk about it. It was more real. There were feelings.
So just as Evie was letting her feelings into the kiss, so too did Freya, who wrapped her arms around Evie’s waist as she returned the kiss.
Kissing Freya also wasn’t exactly what Evie had thought would be her response to the amulet. At least until she’d deduced that there was something more behind the gift. Yet again, she’d taken a page out of her brother’s book and simply acted on instinct instead of thinking it through. Except this time there was no mistletoe-induced feelings, it was all Evie. And she couldn’t help but to feel a little emotional as she felt Freya return the feelings in her kiss. She slipped her other arm around Freya’s neck, just basking in the kiss for some moments. She didn’t want to break it, but air tended to be a necessity at some point.
When she broke the kiss, Evie had a smile on her face, but she didn’t pull away from Freya. She liked being close to her. “I promise I’m not going to jump out of the window this time,” she joked. She couldn’t help but to make fun of herself because it was worthy of being joked about for a very long time.
“And I think I’m about to eat my own words when I once told you I wasn’t going to let anyone take my heart again. Life can be extremely ironic at times since I like you as more than a friend.” Evie wasn’t entirely confident that she wouldn’t somehow screw it up later, but for the time being she was at least open to being with someone again. And she wanted that someone to be Freya.
There was a time for order and thinking everything through, and then there was a chance for just acting. This was clearly such a time. Okay so before there had been mistletoe involved and then window jumping. But all that had managed to do really was knock away all the defenses and bring things to the light even if both hadn’t really been in a place to think about it.
The smile was returned as Evie broke the kiss, Freya’s arms still wrapped around the other woman’s waist.
“That’s good to know.” Because Freya had definitely been about to ask. Instead she just let Evie talk, smile brightening some at the comment of eating her own words about letting someone take her heart again and how life was ironic like that. “Mm, I think in this case it’s okay to eat your words since I feel the same.” She just hadn’t realized it until the mistletoe and then knowing that Evie had gotten injured. Not in so many words at least.
Evie was already well aware that the window thing would undoubtedly be brought up as much as possible until the day she died. And she was okay with that, she deserved it. Though she just wanted Jacob to not learn about that for as long as possible. She wouldn’t mind Freya bringing the subject up, but Jacob? Evie would punch him in the face if he tried bringing it up.
“I’m glad to hear that,” she responded with a warm smile, keeping her arms around the blonde’s neck. This time she wasn’t going to move. Unless
Freya touched one of her sore spots, of course. Her shoulder where she’d been shot was still tender, but she had other injuries thanks to Starrick. Mostly bruises covering her torso. Maybe slight bruising around her neck where Starrick had grabbed her.
“Would you like to go to dinner with me?” Because it was important to make it official. Evie was a little awed that this was actually happening, but she was definitely happy about it.
Oh, the window definitely would be a thing that was brought up. How could it not? At least now that things had settled and there were no hurt emotions or anything like that in the mix. Because even knowing that both of them were dealing with things that made them averse to relationships, someone jumping out of the window because they kissed you? Yeah. Not so great a feeling. But it really didn’t matter now that they were both no longer being dumb about emotions.
As it were, Freya was quite content with how they were standing, though her eyes did notice the bruising around Evie’s neck. She was worried but she also knew how injuries could cross over and given the world Evie dreamt of? She moved one hand from where she’d had her arms lightly around the younger woman’s waist, ghosting her fingers over the bruise that she saw. Honestly it wouldn’t be hard to heal at all. If she could bring Finncent (as Finn had been in Vincent’s body at the time) back to life because she’d protected his soul? Healing these sorts of injuries was a walk in the park.
But before she could even offer to heal the injuries, Evie was asking her to dinner and Freya’s smile returned.
“I’d like that very much.”
When Freya ghosted her fingers over the bruising on her neck, a little shiver ran through her. It was sensitive, and Evie had almost forgotten that it was there. It suddenly reminded her of the events of that dream she’d had. And she was glad that it was behind her. Perhaps her dreams were close to a conclusion now. After all, London had been wrenched away from the Templars, and the Shroud of Eden had been safely rehidden for the Assassins to protect from the Templars.
“Good. I know a good place to go.” Evie smiled. But that would come later when she could bring herself to move. “How bad is the bruise?” She finally asked. Obviously she couldn’t see it, and hadn’t seen it since the last time she’d looked in a mirror. It could’ve been worse, but it was obvious someone had tried to strangle her. Or at least held her by her throat. Both of which had happened.
Freya returned the smile and nodded. “I will trust your judgment.” After all, Evie had told her where to get tea and look where it had gotten them. So there was absolutely no need to worry about what the other woman would have in mind for where they could get dinner. As for the question on the bruise.
“I mean, it could obviously be worse but it’s not great. I can heal it for you.”
The place Evie had in mind wasn’t too fancy, but it was still a nice place for a first date. Perhaps even nice enough to help make up for that whole jumping out of the window incident that she would never live down.
“I wouldn’t say no to healing. Though at least it’s not as bad as it could be. Still, it’s probably better than what the rest of me looks like.” Evie was relatively certain she was covered in black and blue bruises by now. It certainly felt that way. “Jacob and I confronted Starrick, finally. It was not an easy fight.” Which was saying the least, really. But they had ripped London out of the Templars’ grasp and freed it once more. The Shroud was hidden, and now they could stand watch over the city and ensure the Templars never took it back.
At least in their lifetimes, anyway.
Super fancy was something reserved for business dinners and the world of her parents, the world she had done her best to avoid as she made her own way in the world. So not too fancy was more than fine by Freya.
The comment on how the neck probably looked better than the rest of her caused the witch to quirk an unimpressed brow. Though who was she really to talk? She knew the dangers of both Evie’s dreams and her work. It came with the job really. So instead Freya just gave a slight nod.
With that, she stepped back some so she could work even though she’d been perfectly content in the embrace. First she got some sage and then began chanting and doing her healing magic for both the seen bruise, as well as the unseen damage. Never let it be said that Freya Mikaelson did anything half assed.
Evie didn’t really do fancy unless it was called for. But she did want to take Freya somewhere that was nice. After all, she had to make up for the whole jumping out of the window thing.
With luck, Evie’s dreams would either be done now or just peeter out. With London wrenched out of the Templars’ grasp, the Assassins could once again put numbers in the city to help protect the Shroud of Eden. A new generation of Assassins needed to be trained, which sounded strange when Evie was all of twenty years old in her dreams. But considering that could be considered middle age for the mid 1800s, best to start training new Assassins as quickly as possible.
When Freya cast her spell, Evie didn’t move. The aches that she’d felt subsided, and she was rather relieved by that feeling. She didn’t like being overly careful about how she moved so as not to jar sore muscles, her injured shoulder or anything else. Once Freya was done with the spell, Evie smiled.
“Thank you. That certainly feels better.” And she could put Starrick out of her mind that much sooner. Well, at least once she got the Shroud to some place safe, of course.
Dreams were certainly something. For all intents and purposes? Freya should be dead in hers. A thousand years old, yet only looked to be in her twenties. Oh magic. But she could tell her own Dreams weren’t over. Even though Dahlia had been defeated, there hadn’t been a sense of finality. Proven by the fact her family was now facing a prophecy of dying - one by friend, one by family, and one by foe. But it didn’t matter all that much to her at this moment. Yes, the Dreams were stressful and there was always some crisis going on. But she had her siblings in them now and they would defeat this prophecy. There simply was no other option.
But at present, she was more focused on the magic. And compared to other spells she had done? This one was rather simple. Healing bruises and the like was much easier than having to bring someone back to life.
“Well that’s always good to hear.” Smiling, Freya brushed her hair behind her ear.
All things considered, Evie had come out of her Dreams rather lucky. She hadn’t suffered any broken bones or lost limbs, mostly just bruises and sore muscles. The worst was what Freya had just healed. The second worst had been when Miss Thorne had been dangling out the window, holding onto only the necklace around Evie’s neck. If Evie’s abs and other core muscles hadn’t been strong, her throat would’ve been impaled on a broken shard of stained glass. That had not been fun to wake up to, and it had taken a while for her neck to stop being sore.
“It pays to have a witch for a girlfriend?” Evie stated, testing out the use of the word girlfriend. It was odd, especially considering how her previous relationship had ended. She wanted to see where this would go now that she and Freya were on the same page about how they felt about each other.
Okay, so Freya definitely liked the way it sounded when Evie referred to her as her girlfriend. It had been so long since she’d even entertained the idea of a relationship between what had happened with Dahlia, the constant moving and then always focusing on her family - here and in the dreams.
“Yes, it definitely does pay to have a witch for a girlfriend.” She’d said something similar in the Dreams when first officially meeting Elijah and Klaus to keep them from killing Finncent and angering the witches of New Orleans. Having witch allies could prove beneficial.
“C’mon, I’ll go make us some tea.”
