Vanessa had really planned on putting her everything into this semester at school, not letting herself get distracted by anything but that plan had gone out the window before the semester had even started. She’d missed most of the first week of classes and it was stressing her out but she was trying not to let anyone see that. She’d been by to speak to most of her professors already but had been putting off the new professor, not wanting for his first impression of her to be that of some type of flake.
She took a deep breath, knocking on the door and waiting for a response before opening it.

There had been a lot of students that hadn’t shown up to the first week of class. Vincent would have taken it personally only all of Orange County seemed to be under attack by some type of mercenaries. He could hardly blame students for not wanting to be out and about. Still, it wasn’t the best start to his first week as a professor.
It was currently his office hours. Vincent had only had a few students stop by so far. He was currently on his laptop typing up an outline for his next lecture when he heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” he said closing his laptop, setting it aside. The woman before him he didn’t recognize. Granted he probably wouldn’t recognize the majority of his students this early on. There were a lot of them. “How can I help you?”
***
Vanessa opened the door stepping inside and trying to shove her stress even further down. Maybe she should take Presto up on his offer of having a case of beer just delivered to her place through his company. It might help her relax some while she struggled to catch up in her classes and stay on top of the assignments that were being given out now. Wasn’t college supposed to get easier once you got into the swing of it? Or was that just something she’d tried to convince herself of?
“Hi Professor Griffiths. I’m Vanessa Cleveland - one of your students. I was hoping I could talk to you about catching up on the assignments I missed so far this semester in your class? I was having to deal with a personal situation so I couldn’t make it to class.”
***
Vincent didn’t recognize the name. But then he barely knew any of his students names at the moment. There were a lot and it was all still new for him.
“Cleveland,” replies pulling up his class lists on his laptop. “Which class did you say you were in?”
***
“I’m in your Intro to Philosophy class.” Vanessa said, forcing herself to stand still and not give in to the urge to fidget and move from foot to foot.
***
Intro to Philosophy. Vincent pulled up the list. Right there she was. He then went into one of his desk drawers pulling out the assignments he had given so far. “Here you go Ms. Cleveland,” he said as he handed them over. “Let me know if you have any questions.”
***
Vanessa glanced over the papers after the Professor handed them to her, a quick glance telling her she was going to need coffee to even make a dent in some of these while keeping up with her current assignments. “I do have one question for you right off the top of my head - absolute last date I can turn these in for credit?” She was going to try and get everything turned in as soon as she could but she needed to know the deadline to meet.
***
There were a few different assignments in front of her. All due at different days. One of which was the coming Friday. Vincent listed off the deadlines for each assignment then paused. He was now well aware of the strangeness of Orange County. While he couldn’t be all that lenient with deadlines there was something else he could do. “Would you be interested in an extra credit project?”
***
Vanessa filed away the deadlines in her mind as he rattled them off. It was going to take some balancing but she’d make it work. Somehow. Caffeine would likely be her best friend but she wasn’t going to let herself fall any further behind. It might not be her best work but she’d get things turned in on time. A C was better than a zero after all. “Definitely! What’s the project?”
***
“It’s more a paper,” Vincent clarified opening up another desk drawer and pulling out the instructions. “On knowledge,” he went on giving a brief description. “Whether or not it is possible. Defend your reasoning, and write the other side of the argument.”
***
Vanessa took the paper from him, reading over the instructions quickly while he spoke. It reminded her a little bit of some of the assignments she’d been given in her high school debate class. She’d transferred out second semester but the teacher had loved giving them assignments to write an argument from both sides. She’d actually done a pretty good job with those, managing to find research to back up both points of view. “When do I need to get this to you?” She asked, looking back up at him from the papers in her hand.
***
“End of the quarter will be fine,” he gave her a small smile. Vincent didn’t have hard deadlines for extra credit work. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
***
“Not that I can think of right now Professor. Thank you for this. I’ll get it to you by the end of the quarter. And be a lot better about showing up for classes.” Assuming Penny’s dreams didn’t decide to try and kill him again. Or that her’s didn’t. She wasn’t all that convinced that hers wouldn’t try to do it at some point.
“I’ll let you get back to what you were working on.” She said, raising a hand in a half waving gesture before heading for the door, letting out a short breath as she stepped through. Okay so - he didn’t seem to have written her off as a total flake which was what she’d been worried about. Mostly. The last thing she needed going for a social worker was an influential person on any level thinking that about her.
