Being human again was amazing. More amazing than Liv remembered it. She could finally do all the things she had been missing. When she woke up human she ended up taking the whole day off of work, so she could just enjoy herself. Partake in all the things she had been missing out on when she was a zombie. But zombie or human, life went on. Liv was back at work, currently on a lunch break in the morgue. She ordered herself a large pizza with all fixings, and a size of cheesy garlic bread. Oh how he missed food.
Liv was on her third slice when she heard someone enter the morgue. She looked up pizza slice in mid air. “Hey Leon,” she gave a small smile before taking a large bite. It wasn’t just the food that was different for Liv though, her hair was now golden instead of platinum blonde, her skin had a healthy glow and the dark circles were no longer under her eyes. “I don’t have any updates for you, right now. Come back in an hour.” She glanced at her food. “Actually make that two.”
Leon paused in midstep when he got a load of Liv. It took him a moment to process that it was Liv sitting in front of him, but then it came to him. He had, after all, seen Liv when she’d first started going working with the IPD, but that seemed as though it had been forever ago now.
“No problem,” he said. He’d been hoping for an update but that wasn’t his main reason for coming. He lifted the paper bag he had in his hand. “I brought some spicy Thai,” he said, and took another look at the spread of food in front of Liv. “Though I’m guessing you don’t need anything else.”
Normally Liv would love Thai food. So much spice, so delicious. However, right now? She was over spice. All she wanted was to eat all the foods she couldn’t before. Taste the delightful cheesyness of a pizza.
“Aw,” Liv commented. “That was sweet.” Because it was sweet, although she knew it was more of a bribe. A way for her to get his work done faster. She knew how Leon worked. “But I’m good. You’re free to join me though. Enjoy the Thai.” There was no way in hell she was sharing the pizza.
Leon continued to look at the spread in front of Liv for a moment before he pulled up a chair and sat across from her. It seemed a little weird that he couldn’t see a single chili pepper or a bottle of hot sauce. There was a time when the idea of eating in the morgue would have churned his stomach, but he’d been working with Liv long enough that the thought didn’t bother him anymore. Well, at least not much. So long as Liv kept the bodies out of sight.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you eat something that wasn’t covered in tabasco sauce,” Leon said, opening one of the take-out containers. Maybe Sharon would be interested in eating the second order. Or maybe Leon would be hungry enough to eat both of them. “You feeling alright?”
“I’m over the spicy thing. It was a phase.” That lasted two years but that was beside the point. It wasn’t like she could exactly help it either. It was the only thing she could taste after all. But Leon didn’t know that.
“Better than I have in a long time,” Liv answered honestly. She was loving being human. She could taste food again, she was getting laid. Everything was great. Almost too good to be true, but Liv didn’t want to think about that. Didn’t want to jinx herself. “What’s new with you?”
“You're joking,” he said flatly, giving her a long stare. Now what the hell was he supposed to get her for Christmas? He'd already bought her a bottle of Jalapeno Tequila. Apparently he'd just have to drink it himself.
He shook his head and turned his attention back to his food. “Most people have their weird goth phase in high school, but whatever floats your boat. I think I've finally made a break in the case. I'm going to be fucking glad when all of this is over.”
Liv was about to comment on the ‘weird goth phase’ comment. That wasn’t at all what she was. But she couldn’t really explain it to Leon anyway. Besides he continued on with a break in the case and she was much more interested in that. “Well,” Liv said between mouthfuls of food. “What’d you find?”
“DNA evidence,” Leon said proudly. “Finally. Guy’s not in the system, but Ravi pointed me toward this coffee shop owner.” The pieces seemed to fit at least. The guy wasn't unattractive and he has the same silvery hair that Liv had mentioned. “I'm gonna swing by the coffee shop after work today and see if I can't find a way to get a DNA sample. He's bound to have an unintended coffee cup lying around someplace.”
“Let me know if you want me to run it,” Liv replied taking another bite of pizza. Usually she would be all about going with Leon. Seeing if the coffee shop triggered a vision. Or if seeing the guy triggered one. But there was no chance of her having visions right now. Besides, all the free time was going to be spent with Dan. “Tomorrow,” she added as an afterthought. She already knew she wouldn’t feel like coming back in tonight.
Leon was a little surprised that Liv didn’t jump at the chance to get out of the morgue, but then, she had this huge platter of food in front of her and apparently went and got herself a make-over. Maybe she was getting started on her New Year’s Resolutions early. Look normal, eat normal, start doing my actual job instead of annoying detectives. He definitely wouldn’t miss her company, that was for sure.
He took a bite of his Thai food, and then asked “you don’t want to come with?” Okay, maybe he’d miss her company a little bit. She definitely made his outings more… exciting.
She thought about his question for a moment. Normally Liv would jump at the chance to help Leon investigate. But that was when she was, more invested. She did still like investigating, getting more involved in the cases, even without the visions. But being human was still so new for Liv. She had only been one for a few days, and there were things she missed, things she couldn’t get enough of, Dan for example. “I would but I have plans,” she told him honestly. “Next time.”
“Yeah, fine, go have a life outside of work,” Leon said, waving a hand dismissively. “You’ll be missing out on some Grade A detective work though.”
