Rating: PG-13

Rogue came back from her excursion out into the backwoods of Georgia feeling contemplative. Oh, she had had fun, but it left her thinking. It wasn't like she didn't know how things were going to go.

“Honey I'm home!” She yelled randomly as she slipped inside the house she shared with Kitty and co, but her heart wasn't in it. She was feeling rather old today.

Kitty was, luckily, at home. She’d had a good day, and things were on the general looking up and up. But there was something odd about Rogue’s voice. “Everything all right?”

“You fly across the country and back and feel normal.” She wandered into the kitchen, to find herself coffee. “Just got a lot on my mind. How's things?”

“Like what, flying as a day trip? Borrowed my Blackbird?” Kitty leaned her chin on her hands, watching Rogue wander around. “Do I need to bleach the seats?”

“Totally wasn't my idea.” One hand held up in defense. “Uh no, you don't. No shenanigans were had.” A shrug of her shoulder “Otherwise I'd pay the cleaning bill.”

“Thank god. I think that plane gets more tail than a prom date’s car.” Kitty grinned at her. “Doesn’t sound like you had fun.”

“I feel like I need to get bleached now.” She teased. “No I had fun. It was a nice diversion but I picked a memory laden place and kind of feel like I'm seeing a pattern.”

“Why don’t you sit down and talk about it.” Kitty gestured at a chair with an air of ‘you’re not getting away this time.’

She groaned then sat down. This wasn't going to end well was it? “You know how much I love to talk about myself.” She rolled her eyes.

“About as much as I love a flu shot, but you’re here, I’m here, you’re walking like you just got piled driven into a wall. Talk.”

Rogue blinked at her “Went to a cousin's rarely used cabin in the backwoods of Georgia with Logan. He started a things to do list, but really it's just a way of getting me out of the cafe.”

“To do list?” Kitty’s eyebrows shot up. “Remind me to use that line sometime. But it’s good for you to get out. We worry and sometimes I’m not always the best at acting on that worry.”

She snorted, “it started as a joke because I told him I didn't have a favorite beer. It devolved into things a Southern girl should know and what I don't know. It works to get me out once in awhile.”

“Among other things. I’m not sure where he gets off telling you what a Southern girl should know.” Kitty gestured in the general direction of Canada. “He’s Canadian.”

She laughed a bit - “mostly just a distraction, I think.” she snickered as she leaned back and shrugged. “Gets me moving and not just.. Cooking.”

“That’s something you need, but … I’m not sure that’s the best option for you.” Logan didn’t get tied down often, and she didn’t think that was an option right now. The last time it happened… well they didn’t talk about Vel.

Her eyes darkened a little as she figured out where this was going. “Yeah?” A tiny edge curled into her voice. “I'm not dumb enough to think it's anything but fun.” The corner of her eye twitched.

“You’re not dumb,” Kitty pointed out. “But the heart can make you do stupid things. Why do you think I keep hooking up with men named Peter?”

Fingers tapped on the table, a slightly angry staccato beat. “Ugh. No it's not fooling itself into anything either.”

“The lady doth protest too much.” Kitty pointed her finger and made a gunshot motion. “It’s why I stopped trying to do like… hook ups. Aria aside. But I figure I’d have fallen for her soon enough if stuff kept happening.”

That earned Kitty a bit of a snarl. Just a little one. With a scowl no less. “Yeah, whatever, I enjoy my random hookup because it takes a lot to kill him.” she scowled a bit more. “Everyone else is pretty much one accidental zap and toast.”

“Have you stopped to consider that maybe that’s not… well emotionally healthy… I mean.” Kitty held up a hand to hopefully stop another growl. “You’re relying on him, rather than working on controlling your powers, because you know it won’t kill him. So you’ll never be able to fully control your powers again because of that. It would be like if me and you did it more than those few times. I can use my powers to protect myself from you too, but that doesn’t help you… actually I should be yelling at Logan.”

“Yep. I've also been working on it and don't scare my co-workers anymore. Really, don't take away my stress relief. It's just easier to sleep with someone when you know if you lose control you aren't going to kill them.”

Kitty frowned, not really liking that answer but also unable to fault Rogue for her logic. “...doesn’t it feel empty?”

Rogue just gave her a look. “Why do you think I work so much?” She threw her hands up. “I'm too old to be chasing a fairytale ending, Kitty. As much as I'd like one, I'll take enjoying a random and enjoyable sex life over being celibate.”

“You’re never too old for that,” Kitty insisted. “I just...fuck I’m the most cynical person now and even I see that. You’re just going to end up feeling more and more hurt. I don’t know how you can keep it up.”

She lifted a brow at her friend. “You think I don't know that?” Rogue grit her teeth. “By avoiding conversations like this, and by working until I'm too tired to think.”

“Have you considered a tropical vacation? Maybe someplace without a hurricane, anyway.” Kitty held up her hands. “Okay, okay. I’m obviously not helping.”

Rogue rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Don't worry about it.” She pushed herself to her feet. “I appreciate your concern.”

If Kitty wasn't seeing Diana and very very much into Diana, she might have considered reminding Rogue there was more to a good time than Logan. "If I find you a hot chick or guy who's effectively immortal, would you consider trying them instead of him? You know, for variety."

“Someone I can't kill in a moment of loss of control, I guess?” She shrugged a bit..”knock yourself out.”

"Stop doubting yourself." Kitty phased through the table, and grabbed Rogue's hand. "You're better than this. I don't know what doubts are poisoning your head, but they're probably half the reason you do lose control."

“I'm just too tired to deal with going through and figuring my own head, Kitty. The last fix worked for awhile.” Rogue hopped backwards but not fast enough to avoid her friend. Her eyes narrowed a little. “I need to go shower.” Her words clipped, a little annoyed. She hated these conversations. They put her on edge, and her mind was spinning. All she wanted to do was put distance between her and everyone, already deciding her destination.

“One thing.” Kitty hugged Rogue. “I know I’m being annoying, but I care.”

She returned the hug, before slipping free. “That's the only reason you're still upright.” She said with a faint smirk before she disappeared upstairs.
