Normally Chloe wouldn’t just go wandering around for no good reason, but she had really wanted fresh air. Her dreams had turned into getting onto a bus with Derek, Simon, and Tori, but then getting off the bus because Derek was starting to change. It was enough to drive anyone insane, so she had called up Caleb because she wanted to discuss ghosty things since it was Halloween time. She was a little afraid of interacting with true ghosts and not knowing it until she looked absolutely crazy around other people. She had also seen his post on the network not too long ago about the creepy doll and knew he would probably want some fresh air as well.
“I’m really not looking forward to Halloween anymore thanks to being a necromancer,” Chloe explained to him as they walked down a path, coffees in hand, and she let out a sigh, “I really didn't know if anything about the holiday would stir things up, but it makes it harder to tell the difference between living and dead.” She lifted her cup to her lips to take a sip and then she heard a voice carrying on the wind. Her head turned and noticed that they were passing a cemetery and a frown passed over her face.
Caleb wasn’t a huge fan of leaving Hanna alone. Not when neither of them knew her fate in the dreams. The Hanna doll didn’t help matters much. But she had classes to go to and Caleb couldn’t exactly follow her around campus all day. Well he could but he’d get some weird looks. And he knew his girlfriend well enough to know she wouldn’t appreciate that.
Caleb couldn’t exactly focus on work though, so when Chloe mentioned needing some air he jumped at the chance. “I just focus on the fun parts of Halloween,” he said taking a sip of his own coffee. His dreams were full of people in costumes and masks though but that was Rosewood for you. As far as ghosts went Caleb was lucky that he didn’t have to deal with them often. It was mostly just his aunt lately. And Raven that one time. “How are you doing with all that, your powers?” he clarified before noticing the frown on her face. “What’s wrong?”
“That is probably a good idea. I should just think about pumpkin flavored everything and candy. God, I ate so much candy,” Chloe commented with a laugh in her voice. Her dentist appointment was coming up not too long after Halloween, so she knew she would get in trouble about it. She was hoping to get to dress up and hit a few parties with Henry, so at least there was some fun to look forward to, “did you and Hanna go to any fun parties? Costumes?”
“Um, powers are okay,” her tone was distracted as she tried to figure out what she heard, “And I think I heard something coming from over there.” She nodded her head in the direction of the gates that marked the cemetery and she wasn’t sure what to make of it. Following random voices was never a good idea and throwing a necromancer into a cemetery was an even worse idea.
“Candy is the whole point of Halloween if you ask me.” Well that and being scared but Orange County was scary enough all year round. “Yeah we went to a party at my work and her mom’s work party. Did the whole Bonnie and Clyde costumes. What about you and Henry?”
Caleb looked in the direction Chloe was. Oh a cemetery. He hadn't heard anything. “Are you sure?”
“It really is. Candy is absolutely amazing and I may indulge more than I mean to during Halloween time. Bonnie and Clyde? That’s amusing for you two. I convinced Henry to be the Jon Snow to my Daenerys even though he’s never really watched the show,” Chloe explained to him with a small smile. She just really wanted to dress up as Daenerys and Henry would make a good Jon Snow, so she was going to make him watch a couple episodes.
“And yeah, it was a weird whisper on the wind kind of thing,” Chloe explained to him with her frown deepening, “I kind of want to to go in there and investigate, but I’m not sure if that’s a great idea.” Suddenly the voice came calling to her again and she moved to try and figure out where exactly it was coming from.
It was oddly fitting given Caleb’s past. And Hanna was excited about it, designing the costumes and everything. But that was to be expected with dating a fashion major. “That sounds like a lot of work,” he commented. Not so much the Jon Snow part but dressing up like Daenerys seemed like it’d take some time.
Cemeteries were never the best in his dreams, the girls were often digging up bodies or going to meet A there or something else along those lines. But those were dreams, and yes Chloe was a necromancer but he didn’t seem the harm in it. Besides he was beginning to hear a faint noise now too and was a bit curious. “Might as well check it out?” he offered. “What’s the harm?” he gave her a half smile as they walked toward the cemetery. Famous last words.
“Eh, not too much work. I know a few costume people that let me borrow some stuff for it. I’m certainly not going to attempt to make them myself,” Chloe explained to him with a small chuckle, “Did Hanna make your costumes? I could totally see her either making them or having a lot of fun going to a vintage shop.”
“Yeah?” the question hung in the air after it escaped Chloe’s lips and she was honestly surprised that Caleb would be fine with following a creepy voice into a cemetery. But whatever, he was fine with it, so why not give it a try? “Let’s figure this out.” Chloe lead the way into the cemetery, pushing past the gate and tried to focus on the voice that she heard. It was a little stronger now that they were within the boundary, but she wasn’t quite sure on the direction.
“You’ll have to show me pictures.” Words Caleb never thought he’d say. But he honestly did want to see Chloe’s costume. However, that conversation was over and they were walking into the cemetery. Caleb was fine, not at all frightened. It took a lot to scare him. But the situation was slightly eerie. “It sounds like it’s coming from over there,” Caleb said nodding in the direction he heard the noise.
“Of course,” Chloe promised him with a smile before become more serious as they made their way into the cemetery. It was oddly quiet, although it was to be expected in a place like this, but it felt still and made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. When Caleb nodded in a direction she felt like he was correct and she turned course to that direction. She wasn’t sure what they were going to come upon, but she passed by the headstones.
And then someone was in her path. She stopped abruptly and her brow furrowed as she tried to figure out if this was a ghost or not. It only took a moment, she was getting better at this, and there was a bit of a flicker to her, “Who are you? What do you want?”
“Can you give my granddaughter a message?” the ghost asked.
Caleb didn’t see why not. Spirits needed closure too. It was something he wasn’t able to do for his aunt. It wasn’t in him to forgive her. But he didn’t see a reason why they couldn’t help this lady. “Sure,” Caleb replied not at all scared or wary. “Well actually, that depends. Who is your granddaughter?” A name was certainly needed in order to give a message.
A small part of Chloe wanted to frown, why did ghosts only come around when they needed something? Although, it was better than just stumbling upon a dead body when you weren’t expecting it. Eyebrows raised in surprise at Caleb agreeing to give the message and she wanted to warn him against it, but she wasn’t going to let the ghost stick around for much longer once they got the information about the message.
“Melissa Johnson -- tell her….tell her to dig in the backyard,” the ghost explained and that made Chloe actually frown. Vague message and a generic name. This wasn’t going to be fun if they actually tried to deliver it.
Well that was cryptic as fuck. Still Caleb would do his best to help. What was the point in seeing spirits and shit if he couldn’t do anything to help them? “Okay..” Caleb finally said, clearly skeptical about the whole thing. “I’ll do my best to let her know.”
Delivering message wasn’t something she wanted getting around the supernatural community because they weren’t messengers and keeping a low profile was key. When Caleb agreed to do it she closed her eyes to focus on getting rid of her spirit. It was a little hard to focus on just her life line when she could feel the other spirits humming around her. Her mind grabbed what she hoped was hers and she did her best to pull on it. However, that didn’t seem to be the right one when suddenly a handful of spirits appeared in thin air and all began to speak at once.
Caleb had been seeing ghosts for a while now. But never anything like this. It had always been one at a time and it was usually someone he knew. So when they all the sudden started multiplying and talking he was definitely overwhelmed and confused. “The hell?”
“Shit…..” it came out in a breath once Chloe managed to open her eyes, “I’ll fix this!” At least she thought she could fix it. Once again she closed her eyes and tried to concentrate on what was in front of her. Unfortunately her powers were still out of control and she didn’t have a good enough handle on it. There was an odd noise and suddenly a decayed arm shot out of the ground. The noise made Chloe open her eyes in alarm. This just went from bad to worse.
Caleb watched in shock as the hand came out of the ground. That was not certainly not a spirit. No, that was an actual corpse. Caleb had never dealt with anything like that before.”I think we should run,” Caleb said already starting to back away not caring that he looked like a coward.
“I can’t,” the response came after a pause because she couldn’t believe what she had managed to do. This was all her fault and she had to set things right even if it took some extra time. Her voice sounded strangled and she backed up a few feet for good measure, “You can run if you want.” She wasn’t sure how her body could handle this, but she understood if he left. Her eyes closed and she did her best to concentrate and find each individual life line to send them off.
Even though Caleb wanted to get the hell out of there he wasn’t going to leave Chloe alone. Of course he stayed, right by her side. He began to say the spell Lina had taught him even though he wasn’t sure what good that would do. The spell was to get rid of spirits, not deal with reanimated corpses. But hey at least all the ghosts that had been yelling questions at them started to disappear.
The spell to get rid of spirits would work on the ghosts, she just had to work on the zombie that was trying to break through the ground. It took her a bit to find that life line and repeat what she did for the spirits in the Lyle House, but she finally gripped it in her mind and struggled briefly. It took her a moment before she was finally able to send the soul into the afterlife and she no longer heard any struggling to get out of the ground. With a peek to check she let out a sigh of relief that the corpse was just a corpse and she closed her eyes again to help Caleb out.
Caleb continued doing the only thing he knew how and eventually it was back to just him and Chloe in the cemetery. “Okay, now we should go.” Before any of them came back again preferably.
Once everything was settled Chloe couldn’t help but sway on her feet. This was the first time she had used her powers to this extent and she could feel the toll it had taken on her body. She lifted a hand to her head and looked over at Caleb, “Can you call or text Henry or Derek? I don’t think -- “ and with that her body crumpled from exhaustion.
He was about to ask who the hell Derek was. However, before he could Chloe collapsed. “Chloe!” Caleb called out, panicked. He continued to yell her name as he grabbed her phone from her purse texting Henry and the first Derek he found in her phone.
