York had scored the last time he came to this bar. And he figured he should try again, right? Besides, maybe he’d see the beautiful girl again. If not, he could at least have a drink, enjoy the bar, catch the game on tv, whatever. It wouldn’t be a waste.
He sidled up to the bar and ordered a whiskey, then a beer to chase it. Might as well start the night off right.
Alucard had been watching York for a while, but tonight he decided to properly catch up with the other man. Sliding into a seat next to him he grinned, “I’m not your usual type but you might find my company acceptable” he said with a nod, “How have you been?”
York broke into a smirk when the other man came over. “No, not quite my type. But I think you’ll do.” He said, grinning, then motioned to the bartender to bring over another drink. “As good as can be, I guess? And you? Still in the same line of work?” York obviously wasn’t. The accident that took his left eye also left a spattering of acid burn scars over a quarter of his face.
“On a more ad hoc basis nowadays” Alucard replied, considering he had been older than York when they met Alucard didn’t appear to have aged much. One of the side effects of his dreams, a welcome one mostly. “Mission gone wrong?” he asked motioning to York’s eye.
York nodded. “It’s why I’m here and not still there. Honorable discharge.” He explained simply. Talking about his eye made him feel uncomfortable. “What brings you to Orange County? Retired?” He noticed how the other man looked as though he hadn’t aged a day.
Alucard nodded, it was tough but in their line of work it was a risk. He was happy to move on. “Mostly” he smiled, “I've been here a while now. With my girlfriend” he knew that surprised most people. Especially when they realised how young Integra was.
“Ah, so, family.” York knew that girlfriends and boyfriends were just as important to some people as blood was. He hadn’t had anyone like that for years. Not since Carolina. And he couldn’t imagine anything like that for himself now. “Are you in on all the crazy stuff that happens around here?”
“Exactly” Alucard said, and when it came to family she was the most important he'd ever had. “More than you'd ever believe” he replied with a knowing smile.
“I’m starting to learn about this place,” York said. “What with monsters and aliens, and then crazy Dreams?” He gulped from his beer, then set it back down on the counter. “I dunno if I’ll ever be used to it, but I’m starting to feel more prepared.”
“Well if you’re anything like most people around here you’ll get used to the crazy shit pretty quickly. Fighting aliens every now and then will almost be the norm. And the dreams can be somewhat interesting. For some anyway” Alucard smiled.
“What are your Dreams about?” York asked. Then paused. “I’m sorry, is that a rude question? I’m still trying to get used to the etiquette of this place.”
Alucard shrugged, “Some people are touchy about it” he said but he wasn't one of them, “I'm a vampire, the vampire actually. King of the vampires” he grinned his vampire grin.
“Oh.” York sat up a little, his eyes (well, one good eye, anyway) going wide. “A … vampire? Like, for reals?” He asked. Dream shit bled through, right? That’s what he’d learned from Valarnet and everything.
“For real” Alucard said inclining his head, “It was an adjustment at first but now it is almost like I have always been as I am now”
“...how do you go out in the sunlight? Do you really kill people and drink blood? Is garlic really a problem? Do you sleep in a coffin?” York asked, wondering if he should be worried about having a conversation with a real life vampire. Then again, Alucard had plenty of opportunity to kill him, and hadn’t so far.
Alucard laughed, “I’m very old and very powerful and while sunlight isn’t comfortable it won’t kill me. I drink blood but I get my supply in a somewhat more legal manner. Garlic isn’t an issue and I sleep in an extremely comfortable bed” he replied amused.
York was appeased. No need to fear, right? A satisfied vampire wasn’t a dangerous one? Well, not that this man before him wasn’t dangerous--he could still very well be--but that he wasn’t going to kill York personally. “You weren’t… when we met? At the Dictator’s house?”
There was no need to worry, Alucard was in full control and had absolutely no desire to kill York. “No, that was just me” he smiled, “I was already lethal then even without the vampire abilities”
“It was certainly impressive,” York said, raising an eyebrow. “And now it’s worse, is it?” He added. “What are you doing now?” He asked. “...I mean, you’re not in that line of work anymore…” York was really looking for something to do with his own life.
“Oh yes, now I can get shot and not die” he smirked. “I take the occasional job, but I had been doing a lot more private security jobs. You looking for a new line of work?” he asked, he’d happily recommend York for a few jobs. He was skilled.
“I’m collecting disability at the moment,” York motioned to his eye. It was obvious by the splatter of acid burn scarring over his left eye why that was. “But looking for something that’ll make me feel like I’m earning my keep.”
Alucard nodded, “I can put you in contact with the security firm I take jobs for” he offered, “It’s not exactly regular work but it’s well paid and pretty easy for guys like us. Compared to what we’ve done before anyway”
“That’d be great,” York said, giving the guy a nod. “I assume you’ve got all my contact information already?” Because this totally wasn’t a chance meeting, was it? Wink.
With a nod and a smile Alucard acknowledged that he did indeed have everything he needed, “I’ll have them call you” he said simply.
“Thanks.” York lifted his glass in a toast. “I owe you one.”
