They hadn’t seen each other since that fateful night….
York had been in the bedroom of a dictator’s house on a mission with his squad. Their intel was the data was on a laptop in his bedroom, but it wasn’t connected to the internet. So York had been assigned to infiltrate the mansion, to copy the data over to a portable hard drive, and to bring it out with him while the rest of the squad waited outside. Everything was going according to plan until his CO started to yammer in his ear about how the Dictator was on the way home. “Abort! Abort! That’s an order, soldier!”
But York knew that he was only thirty seconds away from achieving his goal. “Package is in my hands,” he replied.
“Negative, York, we have an abort order. Target is in the building.” His CO ordered.
“Damnit. I’m right here,” York replied, then took a breath and tugged out his ear piece. He could still hear it buzzing, dangling around his neck by its stretchy cord.
A light in the hall came on, and York dashed behind the closet door, waiting for the files to transfer. Heavy footsteps grew louder as someone approached the bedroom. But then a scuffle could be heard in the hall, and a body came falling through the bedroom doorway.
It was a simple kill order and one Alucard knew would not be difficult when he had scoped out the house and his target’s schedule. He hadn’t been expecting another team, however. He’d noticed them outside immediately but since it looked as though they were aiming to not come into contact with the target ignored them.
Once inside he followed the man until he was about to enter the bedroom, once alone in the corridor he made his move quickly and let the body fall into the room. That was when he noticed the external hard drive, pulling his weapon he looked around the room. “Out now or I sound the alarm and leave security to deal with you” he said back to the laptop so he would notice any movement around the room.
Shit shit shit shit. York was caught. He took a moment, weighing his options, trying to figure out what his best move was--and then the external hard drive finished copying the contents of the laptop with a gentle ding.
York stepped out from behind the closet door, both hands raised in surrender, eyes to the floor. He didn’t want this to be the end, but… what else was he supposed to do? At least he could go out like a man. His gaze lifted until he saw the man--either an assassin or a guard of the Dictator-- looking around the room.
“This is just a professional courtesy,” York joked. “I could probably handle the security.” ...apparently, he joked when he was nervous.
“I’m sure” Alucard said though his tone implied otherwise, “Who are you working for?” he asked as he moved to disconnect the hard drive, his arm not wavering from where he had his gun trained on the man who had revealed himself.
He wasn’t one for small talk and honestly he’d prefer to just kill this guy but depending on who he worked for it could cause international issues so he’d hold off for now.
“US Military. Marine Corps.” York replied, honestly. His hands remained in the air, his eyes tracing the gun that was pointed straight at him. “Is this really necessary?” He motioned to the gun. “You’ve done what you came here to do.”
“It’s not procedure to leave witnesses” Alucard replied regarding him for a minute more before lowering the gun and putting it away. “But I don’t always follow procedure. We need to get out of here”
“I just need… the drive.” York said, motioning. He was relieved, thankful that this man--this assassin--had just spared his life. This was going to make an amazing story in the future. When his time in the military was over, or at least on pause? He could look back on this and impress girls in bars.
Alucard removed the device from the computer and tucked it into his own gear, “You’ll get it, once we get out of here without any interruptions from the team you have outside” he said, British Intelligence would not be happy if anything ruined this mission but they didn’t need to know Alucard had helped a team of Marines who happened to be in the wrong place and the wrong time.
York nodded. He lifted the earpiece to his ear, never taking his eyes off the man in front of him. “York here.” Pause. “Understood, I’m on my way out.” Pause. “No. Stand down. We’ve got no problems in here.” Pause. “Roger that. I’ll see you in thirty.” Then he flipped a switch, turning the device off.
“You won’t have any problems on my end. My team just wants me out safe. And I just want the drive.” York said, then started to move toward the door. He’d go first--obviously. Lead the way while the other man took up the rear.
Alucard nodded but he wouldn’t be handing anything over until they were out safely and he was in a position to disappear. “Well I can safely say this is not how I imagined this going” he said softly as they moved through the house towards the exit. At one point Alucard halted York and silently broke the neck of a guard about to walk past them on a routine check, laying him down quietly before motioning for York to continue.
“Nor I,” York replied as they moved together through the house. They stopped and the other man had to… then York heard some chatter coming over his earpiece and clicked it on again. “York here. Fall back to the rendezvous point. I’m on the way.” He turned to look over at the other. “...Everything’s fine.”
“Sure?” Alucard asked, he never liked it when he could only hear one side of the conversation, especially when he wasn’t sure he could trust the person whose side he could hear.
York turned and looked at the other man, then his gun, then back again. “If I lie, I’m dead. So, yeah. I’m sure.” He motioned for the other to follow him. The rest of the team had fallen back. They wouldn’t show their faces as the pair of men made their way down the driveway and toward the street.
Accepting that Alucard fell into step beside him as they walked, not looking up he suddenly swung his gun up to the side and fired a silent shot into the tree. A moment later a body fell from it, “Amateur” Alucard sighed, he’d spotted him the moment they left the house.
York was starting to relax a little. Hey, maybe he’d get out of this alive. And maybe he’d even get the drive that he so needed--the package, the whole point of this mission. He didn’t want to fail it, even though he’d been handed a curveball. His eyes went instantly to the movement in the tree, seeing it only seconds before the silent shot and falling body. “That wasn’t one of mine.” He commented. That must have been local staff?
“Glad to hear it, that would have been awkward” Alucard said offering the hint of a smirk, “We should move quickly, I have a feeling more will be coming once the alarm is raised”
“It’s not far now.” They’d be to the edge of the property and down the shared court in just a few minutes more. The good news was that once they were there, they were golden. The bad news was neither of them had cover once they reached the street. York’s team was meeting three doors down, to the south. He glanced over at the other. “Pass me the drive once we hit the sidewalk?”
Alucard wasn’t so concerned about cover, he just needed to disappear and on a street he could do that. “You’ll get the drive, don’t worry” Alucard said, but he wasn’t stupid enough to hand it over before he was in a position to get away cleanly. Despite this guys apparent trustworthiness the fact was they didn’t know each other.
York nodded, though he was getting anxious. They reached the street and moved toward the closest streetlight. He slowed his pace, feeling a little safer now they were outside the house, away from the stream of corpses they’d left behind. He held out a hand for the drive. “Don’t worry. I’ve already forgotten your face.”
“Glad to hear it” Alucard said, taking a moment before handing it over. “Stay safe” he added with a nod before disappearing down a darkened alley way.
