Rachel was so excited for her friend. She was thrilled. Absolutely thrilled. So she put all her wedding junk (it was in a legal sized box) into the front seat of her car, and headed over to Pep’s place to start planning. She was absolutely going to make Pepper’s dress. And design her shoes. And possibly Tony’s clothes, too. Bridesmaid dresses? Yes. Those, too. She had so many ideas, she couldn’t wait to hear what Pepper had in mind!
It didn’t take long to get there, and then Rach was dragging the box out of the front seat and up to the door. She rang the bell, box shifted to one hip, grinning like a mad woman.
Pepper was ridiculously excited, though she was trying to be mature and grown up about it. But she was really as giddy as a schoolgirl. She was so happy that her friend was designing her dress, she was lucky she had such a talented person as Rachel and she was excited to get going on the whole thing.
“Rachel” she grinned, answering the door, “Oh my goodness, look at this” she exclaimed of the box.
Rach laughed. “This is without all the fabric swatches and whatever else. This is just the start.” She said, holding up the box. “Dress ideas, mostly. Bride, bridesmaid… are you having flower girls? Do you or Tony have a mother I should be fitting, too?” Rachel asked, beaming with pride.
"You have no idea how glad I am to have you on-board for this" Pepper said as her friend explained, "You're a godsend. My mother is getting on a bit now but she's hoping to come. Tony's sadly already passed away"
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Rachel said, softly. “Well I’ll definitely make your mother something beautiful for Mother-of-the-Bride.” She followed Pepper into the house and to the dining room table, where she set down her box. “What colors are you thinking? I can get started on things right away.”
"It's okay. Just one of those things sadly" Pepper smiled softly, "I'm sure my mother will be thrilled" she promised. "Honestly I'm not sure I mean beyond a moment of red and gold madness"
“Red and Gold?” Rachel asked, breaking into a grin. “...you mean, the Iron Man stuff? That’s almost like Kevin wanting to do our bedroom in black with neon, pale blue lines.” Long story. Rach had been to the grid and knew first hand that those colors did nothing for her complexion. “I can work with Red and Gold. I mean, Roses are Red, right? And gold is such a noble color…”
The idea hadn’t actually come from Tony, that had been her thought one evening when she’d been procrastinating from work. “You don’t think it would be a little...corny? I mean I’m sure Tony and I would get a kick out of it as well as those who share our dreams or know about Iron Man...” the more she thought about it the more she actually kind of liked the idea.
“Hey, I can make it work. it’ll be really classy, and it can be an inside joke for the pair of you. Something else to make your day even more special.” Rachel said, beaming. “We can use this gorgeous red ribbon with gold trim on all the bouquets.”
“I like it. I really like it” Pepper said, “Let’s do it. Tony will love it as well. Maybe we can get the men ties or something to tie us all in together color wise?” she suggested, sure Rachel would have ideas.
“Oh, absolutely! We’ll put them in red ties. Maybe red cumberbunds? And the bridesmaids and flower girls--if you have any?--will be in red dresses. Actually, color accents are really posh right now when it comes to bridal gowns, too. I’ve seen gorgeous dresses with a large swatch of color--perhaps up the back?” Rachel said, motioning to Pepper’s back and train, imagining a dress with a burst of red color to tie everything in in the back.
“Oh that sounds lovely” Pepper said, images playing in her mind too. “Through the back into the train maybe” she nodded, “That would be perfect” Pepper felt like such a girl in that moment, but she couldn’t deny she was excited.
Rachel laughed. “That sounds so chic! I love the idea. With gold trim, too, to tie it all in.” She was getting all of these fantastic ideas. “Just pick the shade of red you want--is it more of a maroon or an orangey-red?--and I’ll start getting swatches and putting together ideas.” She paused. “Have you two set a date yet?”
“I think more of a maroon red, it just looks nicer” Pepper said, and would clash less with her hair. It sounded quite classy too, with the gold trim which would look perfect. “No, not yet. I’m fairly certain Tony would be happy if I just told him when to turn up. He’s letting me do what I want mostly”
“That sounds like Tony. Like Kevin, too.” Rachel said, beaming. “Am I dressing him, too? He’s not going to wear his metal suit to the wedding, is he?” She added, playfully. Then she realized it might be a possibility and her smile faded. “Is he?”
"No!" Pepper rushed to say, "He most definitely is not. Even if it does for the colour scheme" she smiled, "I'd love for you to dress him too. The whole wedding party if that's okay?" she couldn't imagine hiring anybody else. Nobody was quite as gifted as Rachel at this kind of thing.
Rach laughed. “Good. Because even if it does fit the color scheme, it’s probably best to avoid. Besides, Tony looks good in a tux.” She grinned brightly. “I’ll make sure to organize his tux and Kev’s too.” She assumed Kev was going to be best man. Maybe she shouldn’t have.
“He really does” Pepper agreed with a happy smile, “Good idea. Just let me know when you want to meet with him and I’ll set up the appointment” Pepper assumed the same, she knew Rachel was going to be her matron of honor.
“Good. All right, let’s go through some of these binders.” Rachel said, starting to tug things out of the box. “I’ve got everything coded by color and style. Classy, modern, chic, kitschy… You’ll see.” She pulled open the first binder. It was full of pictures of cakes.
“Oh my god. How do people do this?” Pepper said as she took in the many many pictures, “I am so glad I have you Rach, I think I might run away if it was just me. I mean give me a room full of businessmen and I’m fine but a folder full of cakes has me worrying”
“I don’t know. I think people hire a planner? Unless they’re really, really, ridiculously into this sort of thing like I am.” She gave Pepper a bright grin. “What do you think? You want to do it really hands-on, or do you want to hire a Wedding Planner?”
“I’m hiring you” Pepper said, “I’m not sure I could trust anybody else. Between us we should be alright. You don’t mind do you? I’m not going to take up too much of your time?” she checked.
“No, of course not! I live for this kind of thing. I’ll put together a calendar of all the things we have to have done and all the dates on which we have to do them as soon as you and Tony work out a wedding date. I’d say give yourselves at least six months to plan.” Rachel said, beaming. “Don’t let him convince you just to pop over to Vegas and hit a drive-thru wedding chapel.” Ironic, coming from the girl who did just that.
Pepper hugged Rachel then, feeling incredibly relieved to have her wonderful friend. “Thank you” she said, before nodding, “I’ll pin Tony down on a date. I think I can at least get him to help me decide that” she laughed, “I promise I won’t let him convince me of that. I rather like the idea of our theme already”
Rachel laughed, wrapping her arms around Pepper to return the hug. “You’re welcome. And good luck with Tony.” She grinned brightly. “Me, too. All right, next we need to look at flowers.” She pulled out another, bigger binder.
“Thanks I think I’ll need it” Pepper said, though she actually didn’t think it would be all that bad. “Oh my goodness. I’m not sure I can handle that without coffee”
Rachel chuckled. “Let’s have some coffee, then. My treat.” They could pop out and get something sugary and delicious, completely bad for them. Then, after wedding planning stuff, they could go for a walk to try and burn off some of the calories.
“My treat” Pepper insisted, “Since you’re saving me from insanity and basically being my wedding angel” Without Rachel she knew she’d be overwhelmed but with her she felt able to handle it all. And that meant a lot.
