Nate woke slowly, groaning, as he felt the world come back to him. He was tired now, and he felt it. The world reeled around him, and then settled, and memory came back.
Damn it.
No more dates. This was his luck when he tried to go on dates. Fuck it. Life would toss him a bone someday, but for now, nope. People would probably die if he tried that again. He felt annoyed, and numbness, and a weight on his right leg, and he cracked his eyelids and winced, shutting them again. He must have made a noise, then because someone spoke, and he smiled. Hi Dad.
It would be a Summers family trait for a date to end in a robbery, Scott thought. He leaned back in his chair, watching his son sleep, a slightly bemused expression on his face.
Hey. I take it your date didn't go too well.
Nope. He cracked an eyelid and peered at his dad. And let’s face it, it wasn’t a well planned date in the first place. silly me. I’m swearing off casual sex for now, until life decides I am not a target for a few weeks. A pause. Maybe longer. He cleared his throat, then sighed. “How are you doing?”
He didn't need to think about his son and sex of any sort, so he was glad for the subject change. "Better than I was." Scott's hands still shook if he thought about it.
Nate gripped his father’s hands. “She’ll be okay, me too.” At least it’s over. And she is going to be okay. They all would, someday.
"I knew a shoe was going to drop, I just didn't think it was going to be a shoe that bad." He couldn't think of many things as bad as that, when it came down to it. HE supposed finding her in a pool of blood could have been worse.
Nah, a pool of blood, as long as it was recent, was something Nate could fix. But diamonds? Not so much. Not yet. He sighed and nodded. “We survived. We’re good like that. You two should take a vacation soon, and then after a few days, I can join you. So there is couple time, then family time.”
"I think getting the hell out of town for a week sounds like a fantastic idea." Hulking out at weddings, and now this...
Scott was ready to find an island somewhere and retire.
Emma came back with coffee, handing a cup to Scott when she walked in. She smiled warmly at Nate, and kissed his forehead. “Oh good, you’re awake. You worried us quite a bit, young man.” There was only one chair, so she went to stand behind Scott, rubbing his shoulders softly. “The doctors think that you’ll have very minimal permanent damage, and that physical therapy might alleviate it entirely. I’m sorry your first date ended that way.”
“Sorry, mom.” He smiled to her and relaxed back, looking at these two. Just having them here was good. They were awesome! “Meh. It’s a sign. No casualness for me. And no dating until the bulletproofness kicks in.” He glanced at his dad. “How long does it usually take for powers to hit max, here?”
Scott thought about that for a moment. “Depends on the dreams. Mine did when the new ones stopped coming. Kitty mentioned she felt super charged one morning.”
“Mine aren’t up to their full power yet.” Emma noted. “Though I do want to give Cerebra another try. Maybe after Tony and Pepper’s wedding.” She was close, but she could feel the difference between what that Emma was capable of and what she could do. “I feel stronger with every dream.”
Nate nodded and sighed. “Could be days, weeks, or months, then. Darn it.” He lay back more again. “I hope yours come in quickly. The sooner the chain is ended, the sooner you can know no more days like that one will happen again.”
“Less time, or Longer, there’s no way to tell.” Scott took both of their hands, and squeezed the. “I just want one month....”
Emma stroked his hair. “You know better, love. We just have to deal with what we have.” She squeezed his hand and bent down to kiss his cheek. “I’m fine now, and Nate’s fine, and so far that’s been the case. Unless I die and you’re not telling me, I think we’ll all be fine.”
Nate knew he lived a long time. He wondered if he would dream their deaths. And he hated the idea he might. Man, this stuff sucked some days!
“I was telling dad we should do the two week vacation thing. You two head out for one week alone, then I join you for the second week Or, like a seven day thing with three days of the one and four of the other.” He nodded.
“I almost want to take a month, but that’s not practical,” Scott replied. “The only deaths I’ve dreamed of were Nate’s. And Kurt’s. During the same battle.” And a few other people. Too many people.
Emma stroked Scott’s hair. “And Jean’s. She’s fine. We’ll be fine. I think we’ve earned a vacation. Especially since I got fired from the school.”
“I dreamed of that battle. The night I aged up. I dreamed of that and the battle in the future, and the gateway home.” And his death. Ugh.
Nate sighed, then smiled at Emma. “Sorry mom. Guess you’re stuck as mogul instead of teacher.”
“Tell me you dream of more?” Scott was pretty sure it would take more than that to kill Nate, but a little reassurance didn’t hurt.
“So far, I’ve dreamed of dying twice, and the being raised in the future, and being trained by you and Redd. That’s it, so far.” He rubbed his face. “I think. Sometimes it gets jumbled.”
He knew he wasn’t going to die.
Yet.
Scott nodded his head. “I’m sorry it has to be that way for you. I wish you could dream normal dreams.”
“I do too.” Emma said, sincerely. “But we should make the best of what you have, and what you have is an amazing talent that is only going to grow. I think we could help each other out a great deal, we both need practice in the finer arts of our powers.”
“Sounds good to me. Last night I found out I was stronger than I knew.” He reached out and for just a second, everything in the room floated a half-inch upward, then was gently deposited back down. “No fine control yet, but the teke is alive and well.”
Scott looked between them, then rubbed at his nose. “How about Saturday you both come talk to Alma.“
“Pepper’s wedding is Saturday. We’ll do it Sunday.” She rubbed her fingernails against Scott’s scalp. “I’ll probably spend the next few weeks at the ranch to clear my head after all this. I’ll be a much better pawn in my father’s attempts at world domination if I remain grounded.” Her voice held amusement.
“Sounds good to me. I can definitely do that. “ A few days’ rest and he’d be ready to help his mom. “This sounds like the beginning of an adventure!” He nodded.
“Sunday then.” Scott looked like he wanted to be anywhere but Tony’s wedding. “I think Alma can help you both. She uses her powers like we breathe.”
Emma laughed. She didn’t need to see Scott’s face to know what he was thinking. “You can stay home, I’m sure they won’t mind.”
Nate chuckled. “I wanna go! It’s gonna be fun!”
“Fine, we’ll all go to the wedding. There’ll probably be free wine, and I’m not going to complain about that.” Scott smirked at them. “Now when can we get you out of here?”
“I can’t get out until late tonight or tomorrow morning, it sounds like, but you two should get your rest.“ He smiled at them. “I won't be going anywhere.”
Emma sighed. “I wouldn’t leave under normal circumstances, but I’m exhausted. It’s been a very trying day.”
“Go, sleep. Come back later with snacks for the poor hospitalized kiddo?” He grinned at both both and winked.
FIN.
