It was a homecoming, of sorts. He'd not stepped foot on the grounds of his estate for nearly eight years. All of the bills were paid on time, the most loyal of the staff had been retained, and the castle and grounds showed signs of meticulous care - but it hadn't been a home for quite some time. If not for circumstances, Kitt might not have returned at all, ever. He couldn't bring himself to give it up, but he also hadn't been able to bring himself to visit.
Until now.
He stood in the driveway with his back pressed up tight against the side of his Cayenne, staring up at the castle he never thought he'd see again, wondering how he'd been talked into this. |

He knew he'd picked the wrong week to stop drinking.
He also knew he was now committed to doing so. He owed it to himself, and all the people who were trying to help him.
But his ex-wife - or at least, a woman who bore her name and at least some of her history - had been brought here via the vortex, in what seemed like cruel irony, this universe trying to test his resolve at every turn.
But it was only coffee, right? |
