Ron’s nerves were still jangling in the wake of his meeting with T when he returned to the vicinity of their latest campsite, careful not to Apparate too close to their actual hiding place, just in case he was being followed, and also to avoid startling Harry or Hermione, whichever of them would be on watch at this point. Of course, the distance also gave him a few minutes time to get his thoughts sorted and calm his hammering pulse.
The revelations about the existence Horcruxes weren’t news in themselves, but the fact that T knew about them definitely was. It suggested Old Snakeface hadn’t been as careful in guarding his secret as they’d assumed, or else that he’d let his guard down now that his hold on power seemed secure. There was a good chance at least some among his Death Eaters knew of the existence of the Horcruxes. And it was even possible the Dark Wanker’s most devoted followers might even have a clue where one or more of them were hidden; after all, it wasn’t very likely that Lucius Malfoy had gotten his hands on that fucking diary by accident, was it? Maybe someone like Crouch or Snape or the Lestranges had been entrusted with a Horcux too. Some of T’s comments seemed to be along those lines. More to the point, Ron was almost certain there was no way the Dark Bastard would risk letting the secret of his immortality slip just to bait a trap. Even if he were to try something like that, it seemed to Ron he’d be more liable to try that with the sort of false visions he’d used on Harry before . . . and this meant that T and his terrifying girlfriend really were willing to pass along information from the inside, maybe even offer more direct help. Not that he trusted their motives, they were playing an angle of some sort that Ron hadn’t quite figured yet, but he was fairly certain they could do business.
Of course, all of this meant having to explain to Harry and Hermione that he’d just shared a pint with someone he knew to be a Death Eater without knowing for certain it wasn’t a trap, and without telling either of them first . . .
Yeah, this was going to go over well.
Ron could see the glow of the fire from their tent now, and called out “It’s me!,” unsure whether Harry or Hermione was currently on watch.
