It was not an exaggeration to say that Emmeline was doing well. She had visited Jack's grave, and cried; she had talked to her family about everything that she'd been through, how scary and difficult it had been, and she had cried then too; she had visited hospital patients, even ones that she didn't know, and talked to them about recovery and shared experience, which had also made her cry at times. In truth, she had done more crying than she had ever expected. It hadn't overwhelmed her, as she'd expected: she'd been expecting a tide, a flood. Instead, they were small moments of sadness, tears slipping away from her, through the cracks in her armor. It was better that way, though, because her armor held while the pain behind it lessened. She didn't know how long it would take to lessen completely, but she didn't feel nearly as much pressure behind the walls she was holding up. Maybe the walls didn't have to come down at all, maybe she just had to release enough to be able to build a door, to let the world in.
Well, not the entire world. She had never been that open; she'd always held a few special people close to her heart, and kept most others at a distance. But there was one person she particularly wanted to let in, whom she had not kept as close before.
And right now she was in his arms, dressed up more than she had been in a long while, moving freely, feeling the rhythm of the music through her entire body, the warmth of the wine she'd had with dinner coursing through her veins along with her blood, which was already heated from the movement and the closeness of Kingsley's body. It felt wonderful.
When the music slowed at the end of the song, she stopped - for a moment, she wasn't ready to stop entirely - and curled her arms tighter around Kingsley's neck to kiss him deeply, her mouth still curved up in a smile. It had been hard work to get to this point, but it was worth it, for this.
