They had had one brief shining moment of happiness, after the pain that had been Lavender's labor. One moment of the three of them, her and Shay and Lily, her little baby, three weeks early but still healthy. And Zach, of course, Uncle Zach hovering over it all as she held her baby in her arms with Seamus right there.
And then it had all fallen apart with one look in their journals. Everything was all wrong. Lily was in a bassinet next to the bed, but she was silent. Zach had disappeared, she didn't know where. And Lavender lay in bed in her hospital gown, still a bit hazy from the drugs, voice hoarse from crying during labor, body sore in ways it had never been sore before... and her heart broken. Because Seamus was sitting in that chair, clutching his journal in his hand, crying down at it, and Dean... Dean was dead. She'd read the letter, she knew what it meant with a cold-dead sort of certainty. She wanted to cry, for the lose of her friend, whom she'd loved even with everything that had happened between them. But she thought the potions she'd taken were stopping that somehow, making part of her feel sort of numb and hazy. But Seamus. God, this was supposed to be a happy moment and she could see the man she loved falling apart in front of her eyes.
"Shay," she said hoarsely, stretching out a hand even though she couldn't reach him. "Shay, please baby." He had to stop, she had to get that journal away from him. It was only going to make things worse, she needed to fix him or help him, but she couldn't like this.
