Interesting. Her expression remained pleasant, but even Draco's very vague connection to her mind was telling him something completely different. Betrayal - she must be thinking about the rogue Death Eaters. Those had truthfully been the least of Draco's worries, since he did not consider either of them his friends, although he had worked with Svetkova before.
He did not trust anyone except his family, and even then - he had tried to avoid the backlash of his aunt's vault being broken into as much as possible, with decent success. Of course, everyone had been feeling the heat from the Dark Lord lately, but for Draco that was nothing new. If the others were unused to being threatened with everything they held dear to keep them loyal to the cause, then he supposed he did not envy them the sudden fear of it. As it was, Draco had behaved suitably afraid, but it changed nothing about the way he viewed his position.
Except that he was even less trusting of others than usual, but rather than withdraw from their company, he was inserting himself into places where he was previously not. If his skills with Legilimency could help him predict who might turn on them next, he could prove himself absolutely invaluable to the Dark Lord.
"Have you been working on anything interesting lately?" he asked, changing the small talk topic to something that was presumably more pleasant. Melinda worked in experimental charms, he knew, which was an overlooked department. Simply taking an interest in her work could go a long way towards keeping her satisfied with her lot.
