When I checked my pockets and pack for anything that may give me at least some hint to whom I replaced. I found no identification. Just a set of filthy clothes, a box of something called matches and a few pouches of powder that when I tried to set aflame, started to spark into a variation of colors! Some colors I've never even been able to perform with my magic!

I gathered a crowd doing so. They started throwing coins and pieces of paper into my pack when I set it before me to do a few more tricks. Considering that I found myself to be pretty much coinless, this could be a perfect way to generate some income.

You've become a street performer! That sounds interesting. ...you could use actual magic and trick the audience into thinking they're watching illusions!

But they're not illusions at all! I am truly wielding flames in the palms of my hands. Well, at least the people here don't seem to fear mages as much. I think they're rare around here.

I know, that's what makes it so entertaining! Many people here tend to assume magic is a trick or illusion, I've found. It's amazing. Real magic performed under their noses and they don't even realize!

I take it you've had a go at tricking an audience as well.

No, my magic isn't that showy, so I wouldn't be able to. Well, I suppose the shapeshifting is showy, but that still wouldn't really work. Someone did catch sight of me shifting into a rat but he assumed he'd imagined it. I couldn't believe how quickly he dismissed it. Back home they'd have gone running for the Templars.

He dismissed it? Really? Now that I find extremely hard to believe!

But you're a shapeshifter. That's interesting! I never really was into changing my form much. What else can you turn into other than rats?

Well, I think he was a bit drunk. He just figured what he'd seen was impossible, and therefore hadn't happened. Nothing more to it.

Only one rat, not lots of rats! It'd be interesting if I could turn into lots of rats, though. And also a mabari, and a saker falcon. What magic do you do aside from make fire?

So the people here really aren't used to magic! Hmm... I think I can use this to my advantage!

A mabari? You can shapeshift into a mabari? How adorable is that? May I pet you? Pretty, pretty please? Well, I can shoot lightning from my fingers, freeze things, make the ground shake. Also, I'm a healer so if you have any scratches or sprains or-- Maker forbid, worse, you can just approach me.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]shiftlinggirl

Yes, exactly!

And yes, I can, and yes you're very welcome to pet me in any of my forms if I'm ever around you, I like being petted. I can do a bit of healing too, and some paralyzing if I need to get away in a hurry, but nothing as dramatic as what you do! Those all sound like things you could definitely turn into performances, though!

Did you ever hear of the Mage's Collective?

[info]amellsinferno
2011-07-26 06:48 pm UTC (link)
Wow! You learned from them? I've worked with them a few times. Mostly during the Blight. They really helped me out when I was low on coin.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]shiftlinggirl
2011-07-26 06:51 pm UTC (link)
I worked for them, since I was nine. So, yes, I learned from them; we taught each other, any apostates we helped would share a bit of knowledge to be passed along. We had a few successfully escaped Circle mages here and there (though very few), and even one or two actual Circle mages working for us.

Oh phew, it's a relief you're taking this well. I wasn't entirely sure if you were pro-Circle or not. And it's strange to be able to bring this up, after years of working so hard to keep it secret. This was my biggest secret, more so than being a mage myself. That would just put me in danger, whereas knowledge of the Collective could've endangered everyone in it.

It's good to know that even mages outside the Circle have means to learn more about their gifts. And escaped Circle mages? They must be pretty old considering no one but Anders managed to escape during my stay there.

Not like coming clean about your being part of the Collective would do you any harm in a place like this. When it comes to my stand on the Circle, I can't really choose a side. I arrived when I was very young, maybe even too young, and was a bit pampered by our First Enchanter Irving. I grew up in a relatively liberal Circle that was in a much better state than others, especially Kirkwall. I'll always be grateful for what I've learned in the Circle however I also can't forgive them for several reasons other than keeping me locked in all those years.

[info]shiftlinggirl
2011-07-26 07:25 pm UTC (link)
They were, yes. Only two that I knew of, and one wasn't from the Ferelden Circle at all, I think he was from Nevarra. Come to think of it I don't know if the other was originally from Fereldan either. She might not have been.

That's all fair. It would have been more accurate for me to say I wasn't sure what your view of apostates was. It's been a while since I had the "You should be in the Circle! It's wrong that you run free like this, you're a danger to yourself and others!" lecture, but I can't say I miss it very much.

I have quite a lot of friends who are apostates. I guess you can say that the Warden mages are apostates as well. You're right, I've had quite enough of the lectures as well. I mean, I get them and I've been given permission to leave the Circle!

[info]shiftlinggirl

I don't think you'll be getting those lectures anymore. Not unless some Templars show up. And even if they did, where would they try to drag us too, exactly?

...do you think we still have to worry about demons in our dreams, here?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]amellsinferno
2011-07-27 01:13 pm UTC (link)
Their... churches maybe? I think the Templars would have larger things to worry about rather than chasing us mages around.

I haven't encountered any in my dreams lately. I don't think the Fade exists here. Or maybe this world has their own kind of Fade.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]shiftlinggirl
2011-07-27 06:49 pm UTC (link)
Maybe. I don't think the Chantry's here either. Other churches yes. I don't know, they're all kind of the same to me, so I'm not the best one to ask.

I did meet someone in the Fade a while ago; he said it felt different to him. That was one of the strangest conversations I've ever had, actually. Mostly about darkspawn. But he said he was trying to spend as much time as he could here in the Fade, so it must be around, sort of.

I'm sure I'll bump into someone who knows more about them than me. Or if you do eventually, share the information!

That's really odd then. Maybe I should spend my time in the Fade exploring it while I sleep. Although I haven't had any good nights yet so a good night's rest is hardly an option. Have you ever slept on a bench before?

About churches? Probably not going to be me, I'm afraid! Like I said, they're all kind of the same as far as I'm concerned.

And no, why would I when sleeping on the ground is so much more comfortable? Benches are too hard and unyielding. Dirt and grass are better.

But sleeping on the ground doesn't seem as sanitary. Sorry. I'm kind of constricted with my current living conditions.

Sani-what? What's wrong with sleeping on the ground? It's just dirt. It won't hurt you.

I had a place in London if you want it. I think the rent on it is paid for another two weeks, and I'm not using it anymore. You're welcome to it if you like.

But you get all dirty and messy! If that's the way I want to be, I'd prefer other ways rather than rolling around in dirt. You get what I mean?

Really? I can? Thank you so much! But where are you living now?

Sorry, but not really!

Here and there, on streets and in parks and such. I actually prefer it that way, at least for now. And I'm going travelling soon. So, yes, you're welcome to the flat; it's small but it's something. It's over here at [address]. I left the key under the doormat, so you can just go there if you want.

No ID at all? Really nothing? I mean, even I found something, and I arrived wearing not very much...

Still, sounds like an exciting new career to me. Making money for creating shiny colors on the street? What's not to love?

Not wearing much, you say? Where was I when you arrived?

The fact I barely get enough coin to sustain my daily needs? I think I shouldn't have taken my luxuries in Amaranthine for granted.

You hadn't arrived yet, I think. It was deeply embarrassing. Especially when Zevran showed up. You know Zevran, I take it? Aren't you from one of the other worlds where you travelled with all of us, like Alim?

And that doesn't sound good. Where are you exactly? If you need a hand, I can buy you a few dinners until you get on your feet.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]amellsinferno
2011-07-25 03:57 pm UTC (link)
Of course I know Zevran! I don't think anyone can miss quite a character such as he. Although I didn't know he was in this world too. Apparently in Alim's world, he was me... Or I was him. Whatever works.

Really? You'd do that for me? Maker, there need to be a few more people in this world to feed a poor mage's belly. You have my thanks! I've asked a few people and I think I'm in this place called Times Square? It's really noisy around here but there are so many pretty lights!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-26 01:26 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, that's what I meant. You were Alim was Aedan...I have no idea how it works, none of the three of you seem to have much in common. I mean, you and Alim are mages, and Alim and Aedan were both male, but other than that, not so much. But all three of you became Wardens to defeat the Archdemon. It's a strange idea.

And sure, it's the least I can do for a fellow former Grey Warden. We might not have darkspawn to fight against anymore but we can still stick together, right? Times Square is where, New York? I wouldn't mind getting a look at that place. It's not really a big apple, is it?

You kind of lost me a bit when you were trying to explain a few things. I'll just settle with the fact they're here, I'm here, you're here, everyone's here and that's that. Though it's somewhat terrifying to find out that there's more than just one Archdemon out there.

And yes! I believe that Times Square is in New York. Here, I'll show you how to get here. [address] Nope, it's more like a huge city with lots of towers. Almost like a castle except it takes up the whole place! Well, from where I stand, at least. There aren't many apple trees here. There is however a lovely park somewhere around here with lots of trees!

That's probably because I don't actually know what I'm talking about. I often talk about things I don't know anything about, I'm afraid, it's a character flaw. Your logic sounds good. We're all here, it's all good.

Okay, I can probably get there. If I'm late, it's because I've gotten lost, for which I apologize in advance. Do you mind Chinese food? Have you tried it yet? I've become completely addicted since coming here so that's what I tend to get for dinner. While you wait for me to get lost and un-lost how about you figure out where that park is, and we can go there to eat?

I think it's cute.

Chinese food? What a peculiar name. But I'm willing to try it if you say it's good! Can we carry our meals around? We could find a place to sit and chat. I'll go find out how to get to that park. I think it's called Central Park? Maybe I'll just tread on to the middle of the city?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

...thank you.

And yeah, Chinese food. There's a country called China here, and that style of food is Chinese, etc etc. It's good, usually noodles or rice with a lot of vegetables or meat on top, and these things called scallion pancakes that I swear I could eat by the bucketload. And yep, it's extremely portable. How big is this Central Park place?

That sounds delicious! I can't wait to try it then! It's been a while since I had a meal other than these hot dogs they sell by the road sides. Have you ever tried one? They're actually quite delicious with this thing called ketchup.

Portable is good. That means I can walk while eating? I've asked a few passers-by about it. They gave me funny looks but they tell me that the place is huge!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-27 12:47 pm UTC (link)
Yes, they sell those at the beach I work at. I prefer them with mustard and ketchup both. And try not to think of what's in them. Doesn't taste like most meat I'm familiar with, that's all I can say. but they are tasty.

Chinese food's not that portable, I'm afraid. It involves a lot of rice, so plates and forks are required. Well, required for me, you're supposed to eat it with these wooden things called chopsticks, but I can't get the hang of them at all. We could get something else if you want to walk and eat at the same time?

I don't think I favor mustard much. I do like the mayonnaise. I was a bit skeptical at first, yes. The person selling the hot dogs told me it was made out of meat so I just took a small bite. Then it tasted delicious so I didn't mind anymore. But you work at a beach? What do you do there?

Wooden sticks? How do you eat food with those? I think I'll ask someone around here how to work them. I'm really curious about this Chinese food. Maybe we could have a picnic instead?

It's all right! Well I'd need to see what you do all ready to give better advice. But from my experience, anything that can captivate a crowd is good. People like thrills almost as much as they like happy endings. Maybe try something a little more daring than simple juggling?
