It's been a long time since I wrote one... but hey... I said I would...
"Beloved"
When we finally heard the thunder That announced the coming dawn, Did we ever stop to wonder What we might be doing wrong? Were we selfish, were we jealous Of that pure and simple light? Did it deafen us to hear them Tell us how to do it right?
Oh, the wisest men have said before The beloved is what dies. It is made wretched by our hands, And buried by our lies, And while we mourn what we've destroyed It gasps its final breath But only when forgotten Does it rest in bitter death.
When we couldn't see from under This deep fog we welcomed in, Did we ever stop to wonder At the life that must begin? That must fight and grope each moment Through the storms we all have made And at last be our atonement When our debts must all be paid?
Oh, the wisest men have said before The beloved is what dies. It is made wretched by our hands, And buried by our lies, And while we mourn what we've destroyed It gasps its final breath But only when forgotten Does it rest in bitter death.
It is innocence we squander When we are our fathers' sons. Through their storms we all still wander 'Til the horrid deed is done, And our sons and daughters follow Lost and broken where we lead. In their sorrows they may wallow But we planted first that seed.
Oh, the wisest men have said before The beloved is what dies. It is made wretched by our hands, And buried by our lies, And while we mourn what we've destroyed It gasps its final breath But only when forgotten Does it rest in bitter death.
So never rest, no, never rest Until you find the way, And in our arms it will be best To meet the end of day And find that starlight welcomes you, A vast and endless sea. Into that sky we'll carry you, And learn how to be free.
Oh, the wisest men have said before The beloved is what dies, But wisdom's only half the way To where your future lies. We'll mourn with you for those who've found Their way back home in death, And be there when your children Wake the world with their first breath.
