| Happy December Birthdays! |
[Dec. 2nd, 2009|08:32 am] |
According to LJ, IJ, and DW, the following people have birthdays coming up this month: erickajo*, pyjamapants, snarkywench_64, liz_marcs, seti_apollonius, pendamuse, gypsy_morph, jackiejlh, theturningworld, saracen77**, savine_snape, lady_rhian, sc010f, keladry_lupin, ayerf, slyth_wolf, wonderfulwrites, and mollyssister. Happy birthdays to you all!
If you would like an original or fannish drabble (story of 100 words) or ficlet (less precisely worded but still very short story) as a birthday gift, please comment with the fandom and character(s) or pairing you'd like it to be about (obviously not quite applicable for original fic) and some sort of prompt, and I'll do my best to get it written before your next birthday! (A lot sooner if I can help it. Yes, I realize I still owe fics back to August, but now that clinical's done with class soon to follow, maybe I can finally write more than just TFTWSD.)
If you're wanting a rundown of what I will/won't write, I've got a post covering the basics here on LJ and here on IJ, though I should add that just because I haven't written a fandom or pairing before doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a challenge. And if you're wondering how to prompt for something non-fannish, there are some suggestions here on LJ and here on IJ.
*Has anyone seen or heard from erickajo in the past, oh, 11 months or so?
**I think I still owe you last year's birthday fic, saracen_77. *cringes* Sorry! |

| And I made it! |
[Nov. 30th, 2009|02:26 pm] |
I successfully met the 5_for_five challenge: write at least 500 words at least 5 times out of the week for 12 weeks. Ta-da!
Shiny!
The fic o'doom, aka The Fic That Wouldn't Stay Dead, is now over 66,500 words. Meep! But I think it's keeping me relatively sane this semester, and the motivation of this challenge has helped me keep at it. It's rabid enough that it'd probably have kept eating my brain anyway, but there's this thing that happens when you let a rabid story do that without ever writing any of it out. It just sort of spins itself out and dies. Now, that might actually be a good thing in some cases. There are times I think that might be the best fate for this fic. BUT the writing of it continues to take the weight of the semester off my mind at key times, so having the motivation to sit down and churn out at least 500 words (and often as not, it's after passing that point that a scene takes off) has been a very good thing.
Huge thanks to lady_rhian who thought up this challenge in the first place and mega thanks to sshg316 for opening the challenge up to the rest of us and helping keep us motivated to just keep writing!
Also? Tomorrow's the last day of clinical for this semester. Whee! |

| Thanksgiving Celebration |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|03:30 pm] |
So, around these parts we didn't cook for ourselves on Thanksgiving. Why? Because I massively fail at Turkey cooking, and Mom's recent knee surgery has prevented her from having the patience with herself to cook something like Thanksgiving Turkey (and all our traditional leftover meals).
Instead? We went to Shari's Restaurant & Pies for dinner, at our traditional 3-4 PM. Mom had their Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner (White and Dark meat, dressing, sweet potatos, cranberry sauce, steamed veggies, and cornbread)... with salad and a slice of Candy Mint pie. Dad had the Roast beef (Mashed potatos, Veggies, and cornbread) with salad and Sour Cream Lemon Pie slice. The Brother had Chicken Fried Steak with the accompaniments, a Caesar salad, and French Chocolate Silk pie slice. Me? I had Chicken and Dumplings with a bowl of Chicken noodle Soup, with a slice of Candy Mint Pie. I uh, also consumed my brother's steamed veggies (which were mostly carrots, and he LOATHES steamed carrots, raw ones are fine) and his slice of cornbread.
Black Friday shopping? Sorta did some. My sister called about 11:30 AM our time after she was done with hers, and BEGGED us to head to Target to see if they had a certain Wii game and some Leapster games that HER Target had been out of. All the ones she wanted were at our Target, and we were in and out in under forty minutes, MOST of that walking from the car to the back of the store where electronics is located.
Today, Mom and I braved Wal-mart crowds to get some bras for ourselves. Since we both recently realized that our bras weren't fitting and used this international bra size calculator, to discover our new ones. I was wearing a band size too small, but my cup size stayed the same. So I bought some pretty colored bras (since I have a lot of white ones), and Mom bought some in her size (she went up two band sizes).
We also went to the nearby Dollar Tree and began picking up stocking stuffer chocolate, and some of the the fun things we get in our stockings. Got a lot of Palmer brand chocolate today, I'm already eying the Caramel Santas. |

| Fic rec: The Guardian (Torchwood, PG, Jack/Ianto) |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|06:11 am] |
Helluva day to post a rec, at least for folks this side of the pond, but here it is nonetheless.
Title: The Guardian Author: madambackslash Fandom: Torchwood Rating: PG Characters: Jack Harkness, John Hart, Gray, Ianto Jones, Rhiannon Davies, Mica Davies, OCs Spoilers: Through CoE Summary: The Jones family has lived in Cardiff for a very long time... Why you should read it: This tale starts in 27 CE with a very young witness to a horrific event, a witness who proceeds to give that event a meaning that grows through time and then persists well beyond. To say more would spoil it, but it's beautiful and sad and touching and I expect it's a story I'll revisit more than once. Have Kleenex handy when you read. |

From now until Dec 1 reply with 1-5 pictures-- you have to supply the pictures, either comment & email the pic to me (with hey ij/lj user name is me noted in email please), or put them in the comment and I'll make an icon/icons. |

Well, catching up with comments and such not so much, but I have been all sorts of accomplishy offline here on things around here. At least to the somewhere on things around here. At least to the usual state of disarray and chaos rather than mom's sick wreckage.
I've got a handful of ficlets going up later this week I hope. Also hopefully (finally) the next bit of Away with the Boys in the Band. Also possibly next of A Little Bit Backwards.
I've got a few bright ideas here for the holidays. Vaguely the idea of an advent calendar but we'll see how many days I actually hit from now until the first of the year.
(note I'm already a day late because this was supposed to be posted last night and I got monkeyed ~laughs~)
Mondays are for music though Cause I R CLEVER like that. ~snorts~
( stuffages )
Now for more coffee. IEP this morning. |

| Wow, my geekitude really does know no bounds |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|06:03 pm] |
*looks @ fic*
*looks @ scratch notes*
It really takes a special kind of geeky OCD to turn "how are we going to transport these aliens" into a convoluted dimensional analysis problem and then try to turn that lovely long string of Imperial-to-metric-and-back conversions into (hopefully) believable dialogue.
Have also finally chiseled out something vaguely resembling an outline. Sort of. Considering the extremely minimal say-so I appear to have in terms of what is actually happening with this damned thing, I'm sort of pleased to have managed to contain it in 13 chunks/eps/chaps/whatever. For now. This is, after all, The Fic That Wouldn't Stay Dead, and "if I can't kill you, I can contain you" turned out to be canonically (and predictably) untrue. *facepalm* Which isn't to say that they're all written, by any means. Very close to crossing the 60K mark though. *boggles*
Finally finished my S2 rewatch Friday night at work. Amazing how differently some bits come across the second time through.
Also periodically listening to audio of GDL's panels from The New England Fan Experience, which I briefly considered running up to Boston for last week (before deciding that was insane, as it would mean leaving directly from work Saturday morning to have even a prayer of catching his panel that day). Dear Gods, this fandom really has kidnapped my brain. *facepalm*
Oh, and I watched "The Rescue" last night. I don't always watch the special features, but I did this time, and it was interesting to learn that those two eps got the highest ratings of any Who story arc until the Baker years. They were all marveling that it was a bigger draw than the Daleks. I'm marveling that "1st introduction of a new companion" was a bigger draw than "1st regeneration." Which reminds me, tangentially, that ubiquirk just drew my attention to the fact the Doctor is apparently supposed to get younger with each regeneration. Huh. Didn't know Gallifreyans had a common ancestry with Orkians. This has slightly tempered my annoyance that Eleven looks like a teenager. (Does that mean Twelve will need to actually be one? LOL)
Ah well, time to do a bit more writing. 76 more words and I'll hit this week's 5_for_five goal. Whee! |

| Question for anyone with actual knowledge of modern firearms |
[Nov. 19th, 2009|07:15 am] |
There must be a book somewhere for writers who need to know this stuff. I've seen them for criminal investigation procedures and medical jargon. Stands to reason there ought to be something similar for guns, if I can just find it. Surely this won't be the only time it'd be useful.
But meanwhile, oh wise and wonderful flist, is anyone up for helping me work out whether this is a reasonable plot device? Pretty please with cinnamon sugar on top?
( Gunpowder and bullets and casings, oh my. )
And yes, I realize the icon is from a different fandom. Still fits. *g*
Off to lecture soon. Topics of the day are STD's, violence, and death. So that'll be an upper of a day. |

[Nov. 19th, 2009|12:24 am] |
Still alive. Feeling much more human other than the whole coughed myself to feeling like I've been beaten with a baseball bat and the usual sleep issues. I'm shooting for getting comments and email caught up tomorrow evening.
Playing catch up as I can around here with everything, mama sick=everything goes to hell, nothing gets done. Nothing all that surprising or atypical about that. It's a law of the universe everywhere. ~snorts~
The prompts have all been saved and a few of them are definitely eventually being ficlets *knock on wood* what other curveballs rl decides to throw permitting. Right now though I actually get to go to bed within half hour here. so yay. I'm beat. |
