Challenge/Prompt: #101 - tomorrow
Summary: He can't let go. Not yet.
I just miss you, he says, and she sits down next to him, takes his hand. Her grip is firm, comforting, and he looks down, remembering the end, her fingers nothing but pale, tight skin and protruding bone. Her wedding ring no longer fit but she insisted on wearing it still, threaded through a fine chain that draped around her neck. She was stronger than all of them, even then.
Sometimes it feels like I've been missing you my whole life, he says, glad that she isn't real, glad this is a dream, because he would never say that, however true it is.
Sometimes that's what love is, she says, touching his face. Sometimes things aren't perfect, Donnie, she says. People aren't perfect. But it's always worth it, trust me.
She's right, he knows, but he can't let go. Not yet.
You worry too much, she says. You always did.
When he wakes, he feels lighter, unburdened. And, for the first time in what seem like forever, he doesn't have a headache.
"Fancy coffee?" says Robin when he stops by her office later that day. She narrows her eyes. "What's the occasion?"
"Nothing," he says, checking to see no one's looking before he quickly kisses her nose. "No reason."
"Hmmm," she says, taking a sip. "I could get used to this."
Don shrugs. "Maybe you should."
"Maybe," Robin says, and they both smile.
